9. VANYA

I didn’t know how much longer I could survive living in the house with Joy’s constant nagging. As if that wasn’t enough, my father had forbidden me from going to work. Not that I actually listened. It was easy to sneak out of the house once he left or locked himself inside his study for meetings.

It was almost as if I was seventeen again.

But it didn’t last long because Joy ratted me out. I really, so badly, wanted to slap the fake lashes from her face. The fact that I couldn’t do anything on my own was also driving me insane. I missed my independence.

I’ve tolerated enough. There had been no further attacks on me, therefore, there really was no reason for me to continue staying under my father’s roof.

If my father was really so worried about me, then why hadn’t he listened to Devrim? Why had he waved his words away like they were nothing?

There had to be an ulterior motive for him keeping me locked inside his house. My guess was that it had something to do with the Christmas Ball coming up in a few months, or maybe the people started to notice the distance between us.

Mom had always included everybody on the island during the holidays. But since Joy took over... you could imagine just how much she changed things.

There was no way in hell I would be attending the ball, and there was definitely no way I would be staying with them a day longer!

***

I stuffed the shirt into the bag and zipped it closed.

After one last glance around the room to make sure that I had all my things, I grabbed the bag and headed towards the door.

My father had left early, and Joy was probably still sleeping. If I was quiet enough, I might even be able to sneak out without any of the servants knowing that I left.

Seemed like luck was on my side for once. I managed to make it out of the house and to my car without being spotted. The guard at the gate gave me a friendly smile and a wave as I drove through.

My father stayed on the outskirts of town near a beach that he had made private once he got elected as Mayor. I used to love it here as a kid, but then reality slapped me in the face when my mother died and he married Joy shortly after.

It took me twenty minutes to make it to town because of the early morning traffic, and another ten minutes to drive to my apartment. I just wanted to stop for a change of clothes and to drop off my things before I headed to work.

“Stupid bastard,” I cursed as I stared at the truck parked in my parking spot.

My parking had clearly been marked with my name and apartment number. How could the driver possibly miss it?

Gripping the steering wheel tightly, I glanced around the lot until I spotted an empty parking. I continued to curse the guy as I parked and got out of my car with my bags and headed into the building.

When I stepped into the elevator, my mind instantly trailed to Ezra. It felt like that day was months ago, when in fact, it had only been a few weeks.

We thought of them as badasses, but who would’ve known that one of them was afraid of a damn elevator. To us, they were part animals, it was just hard to imagine them having normal human fears.

My lips twitched as I thought of the look he had on his face when he had picked up my panties. When it happened, I had found it really embarrassing, but looking back at it now, I could see the humour in the situation.

The elevator stopped, instantly snapping me back to reality. I stepped out with a smile, but it instantly faded when I saw that my apartment door was ajar. Fear filled me, making my steps falter. Everything was as it should be this early in the morning except for my apartment. Something was terribly wrong.

Through the gap in the doorway, I spotted some of my stuff spewed across the floor. Swallowing, I moved away until my back hit the wall. Snap out of it, Vannie!

I nodded as my mind started working again. Lowering my bag to the floor, I searched through my purse for my phone. My hands shook as I unlocked it and called the police.

Chief Curry answered on the third ring. “Chief Curry, what’s your emergency?”

“I-it’s Vanya. I-I think s-someone broke into my apartment.”

The Chief muttered a curse. “You’re supposed to be at your father’s house! Get in your car and stay there!”

Of course, I didn’t listen, but I wished that I had.

With my phone clutched tightly in my hand, I took a step and slowly reached out to press my fingertips against the door. It made no sound when I pushed it open, but the sight of my apartment made me gasp loudly.

Everything had been destroyed.

I tried to fight the panic as I followed the path of destruction towards my bedroom.

“Oh God.”

My phone slipped from numb fingers and fell to the floor. I pressed a hand against my mouth, but it did nothing to stop the bile that rose up my throat. I knew I needed to look away, but I couldn’t tear my eyes from my bed.

A woman laid in the middle of my bed dressed in nothing but blood soaked underwear. Ropes tied her arms above her head and her ankles to each end at the bottom of the bed.

She was cut open from her chest all the way down to her pubic bone. Her intestines were spread out on the bed. It looked like she had been slaughtered by an animal.

And above the bed, written in what I assumed was her blood, was a message for me:

He is defenceless. I could easily hurt him. To be honest, I had considered it, but then Devrim’s words flashed through my mind and pulled me out of my disturbing thoughts.Devrim had been right. But it didn’t make me fear Obsidian less.I sat in the chair a few feet from the bed, staring at the door as I waited for Devrim to return. Every passing second that he was away made my mind race with things that could go wrong.Darkness was creeping in on me, and I had no idea how to handle it.A whimper from the bed made my eyes snap over to it.Obsidian was on his stomach, clutching the pillow beneath his head as his big body trembled. The whimpers changed into growls that made my skin break out in goosebumps. The room suddenly fell silent again, but it didn’t last long.Rolling onto his back, Obsidian clutched at the sheets as his whimpers started up again. It got louder and louder.Tears filled my eyes.It sounded like he was in pain. What am I supposed to do? My eyes darted over to the

I think I’m going to pass out. After everything that had happened, I never thought that I would be returning to the cabin. My steps faltered when we reached the front door. Oblivious to my hesitation, Devrim opened the door and entered. As he turned to close it, his eyes locked on me. “Vanya?”When he told me that Obsidian was sick, the concern I felt had me agreeing to go with him, but standing outside the house made me second guess myself.I was about to face the man who had attacked me, the man who haunted my dreams, and not in a good way.Swallowing, I took a step forward, but my muscles tensed, preventing me from moving.“What’s wrong?” Devrim asked as he walked over to me. “You’ve gone pale.”“I…” My words trailed off when movement behind him caught my attention. My knees weakened when a wave of fear hit me. I wasn’t ready to see him yet!Panic hit next.If Devrim hadn’t grabbed hold of my arms, I would have run away.“Rosebud—”“I don’t want to see him,” I blurted.“Please, Va

What are monsters? The imaginary creatures we were sure hid under our beds? Were they the creatures that the authors and filmmakers created? Maybe the stories told to scare us were monsters in their own way? Or maybe the adults who told us those stories were the real monsters?A monster was cruel and evil.A monster was someone who found joy in hurting others. Like those men who hid in the shadows, waiting for a woman or man to come along. A monster was someone who killed without a second thought.I sniffed and reached up to wipe the tears from my cheeks. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t pull my eyes away from the group of kids in the alley below me. I had spotted them the moment they entered. One of them had pulled out a knife and was busy dissecting a dead animal. Are they monsters? The moment the kid had pulled out the knife, I had thought of Obsidian, and then my mind had trailed to Devrim and Ezra.I hadn’t seen them in weeks. As soon as the doctor had given me a clean bil

“Get the fuck out!” Ezra sneered.I ignored him and made my way over to the bed, but he stepped in front of me and flashed his teeth. I growled at him, but he didn’t even flinch. My eyes narrowed and my fists clenched at my sides.“You’re not allowed in here,” he hissed.“I’m here to talk to Vanya,” I told him.He growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes shot over his shoulder to her. Her head was bent, her hands clutching at the sheet. I sucked in a deep breath and closed my eyes. The sweet smell of her fear filled the room. She’s scared of me. “Vanya?”Her body jerked as if I’d struck her. Slowly, she raised her head, but she couldn’t look me in the eyes. Her eyes briefly glanced in my direction, then instantly lowered again. What little colour she had in her cheeks when I arrived was now gone.“Get out,” Ezra growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes snap back to his. “I’m talking to her and not to you.”“She doesn’t want to fucking talk to you! What made you

There was no annoying beeping filling my ears. No machines attached to every possible inch of my body. Everything was silent which made me feel like I was alone, but I knew I wasn’t, because I could feel the comforting weight of another hand on mine.I wasn’t dead.I wasn’t alone. But I was in pain. The constant throbbing of my shoulder and the feeling of fire ants crawling all over my body was pulling me from my sleep.I didn’t want to wake up, because in my dreams, everything was okay. In my dreams, Obsidian was smiling at me, and Ezra had accepted the fact that Obsidian and Devrim loved each other. In my dreams, everything was perfect. But dreams only lasted so long before reality started creeping in and everything crumbled and the real world showed its ugly face.A soft sigh reached my ears, followed by the sound of a chair creaking. The weight on my hand disappeared, making emptiness fill me.I had fucked up and now I was all alone.“I know you’re awake, sugarplum.”I hesitated

It was all part of his plan.If Vanya died, I would be blamed for it. They’d kill me and every other pride member on the island. The humans would be turned against us by Reeves, because he was powerful enough to accomplish that.I knew he had been watching us. I knew he had seen me attacking Vanya.Small cameras had been set up in the corners. The entrance and exit had also been revealed numerous times when he entered and left. The gas he had used to knock me out in order to move me was something they had used in the facility. What was really worrying was the fact that he somehow got hold of the gas in the first place and that he knew so much about me.My eyes darted to one of the small vents I had seen hidden slightly from the human eye. It was how he was planning on knocking me out again.I was just waiting for the right time to strike. I paced back and forth next to Vanya’s unconscious body. Stopping, I licked at the deep wounds on her upper arms. A shudder raced through my body an
