Chapter 15

Izariah-

“Mel!” I yelled out to my best friend, which had just fallen through the ice of the lake we were playing on.

I started to panic as I watched her tiny arms try to reach for something to grab onto. Getting onto my hands and knees, I crawled toward her but stopped when I heard the ice cracking beneath me. Not wanting to fall through the ice as well, I looked around to see if there was a stick or something I could use for her to grab ahold of.

Not seeing anything, I burst into tears. We knew we weren’t supposed to play on the lake when it was frozen. The only reason we went out was that the ball we had been playing with rolled out onto the lake after kicking it too hard.

Neither of us knew how to swim, but since it was frozen, we thought it would be okay to get the ball. Once we realized that it was fun to skate around on the slick surface, we ignored the warnings from our parents. We were small five-year-olds, so it didn’t seem that dangerous.
