Violet:
The apartment smelled like Marcus. That was the first thing I noticed when I let myself in with the key he'd given me three years ago. The familiar mix of his cheap cologne, the one I'd bought him for his birthday, and the stale beer from last night's game celebration clung to the air like a second skin. I balanced the takeout bag in one hand, the carton of Thai food he always ordered after a win still warm against my palm.
The hallway was dark, which was strange. Marcus never slept before midnight, especially not after a game. He'd be wired, replaying every shot, every save, every time he almost scored. I'd learned that about him early on. The post-game adrenaline was part of the package of dating a hockey player.
I smiled to myself, kicking off my boots by the door. The apartment was a mess, his jersey on the floor, empty bottles on the coffee table, the TV still on with some highlights reel playing on mute.
I made my way toward the bedroom, already planning how I'd tease him about falling asleep before I got there. I'd climb into bed beside him, press a kiss to his shoulder, and tell him his game was incredible. Because it had been. He'd scored twice tonight. I was proud of him, even if he never seemed to notice how much I showed up.
The bedroom door was cracked open.
I pushed it wider with my hip, the takeout bag rustling, and opened my mouth to say something soft and affectionate.
Then I saw them.
Marcus was on his back, sheets tangled around his waist, his bare chest rising and falling with the heavy rhythm of sleep. His arm was draped across the pillow, fingers loosely curled in blonde hair that was definitely not mine.
Chloe.
My best friend. My roommate. The girl I'd known since freshman orientation, the one I'd held while she cried over her own breakup, the one I'd trusted with every secret I had.
She was pressed against him, her bare shoulder exposed above the sheet, her lips slightly parted, her hand resting on his chest like she belonged there. Like she'd been there a thousand times before.
The takeout bag slipped from my fingers.
The noise of it hitting the floor was loud in the quiet room. Thai food splattered across the hardwood. I stood there, frozen, staring at the two people I loved most in the world tangled together in the bed I used to sleep in.
Chloe stirred first. Her eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, she looked at me with that sleepy confusion of someone waking up in the wrong place. Then recognition hit. Her face went pale. She scrambled backward, pulling the sheet up to her chest, her mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air.
"Vi," she breathed. "Oh my God. Vi, wait."
Marcus's eyes snapped open. He looked at Chloe, then at me, and I watched the blood drain from his face in slow motion. He sat up so fast he nearly knocked Chloe off the bed, his hands raised in front of him like he was warding off an attack.
"Violet," he said. "This isn't...it's not what it looks like."
I laughed. A short, ugly sound that didn't belong to me. "Not what it looks like? You're naked. She's naked. What exactly is it supposed to look like?"
Chloe scrambled out of the bed, clutching the sheet around her. She was crying now, "It was a mistake. It just happened. We were celebrating the win, and we had too much to drink, and..."
"Stop." This wasn't my best friend. My best friend wouldn't have done this. My best friend would have been the one to warn me, to protect me, to drag me out of this apartment before I ever found out.
"Please, Vi," he said. "Just let me explain. It was one time. It didn't mean anything. I love you. I've always loved you. She was just...she was there, and I was drunk, and..."
"One time?" I repeated. "You expect me to believe that?"
His silence was the answer. He couldn't even lie convincingly.
"Violet, please." Marcus's voice cracked. "Don't leave. We can fix this. I'll do anything."
I stared at him, at the face I'd kissed a thousand times, at the eyes I'd looked into and seen my whole future. And I felt nothing. Not sadness. Not anger. Just... empty.
Chloe reached for me. "Please. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. It was just a stupid mistake. You're my best friend. You have to forgive me."
I looked at her outstretched hand and thought about all the times I'd held it. All the late nights we'd stayed up talking about boys and dreams and fears. All the secrets I'd trusted her with.
I didn't say anything. I just turned around and walked out.
Outside, the night air hit me like a slap. I was halfway down the street before I realized I was crying...great ugly sobs that tore out of my chest and left me gasping. I hunched over, my hands on my knees, and I screamed into the empty street.
No one came. No one ever came.
I stumbled to a bench and sat there, the cold seeping through my jeans, and I let myself fall apart. The betrayal cut deeper than anything I'd ever felt. It wasn't just Marcus. It was Chloe. The two people I'd built my entire life around, and they'd both stabbed me in the back.
I wanted to hate them. I wanted to break something, scream something, do something that would make the pain stop. But I just sat there, numb, watching the streetlights flicker and wondering how I could have been so blind.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. Marcus's name flashed on the screen. I declined the call. It buzzed again. Declined. A third time. Declined.
A text came through from Chloe: "Vi, please talk to me. I can't lose you. You're everything to me."
I read it and felt nothing.
Then a message from Marcus: "I'm coming to find you. Don't do anything stupid."

Liam:I don't know how I'd managed to book her a cab, but the moment Derek came back, I was still sitting in the same position he'd left me in, my eyes fixed on the screen."You should have told her," he said, sitting down across from me. "You were wrong, but it's for her sake after all," he murmured, turning the open laptop on the coffee table fully toward him."Liam," he called, and looking up from the laptop was when he noticed the change. Derek didn't wait. He quickly rushed to my side, his head popping over my shoulder. Silence settled between us, nothing but our heavy breaths filling a space that suddenly felt limited. An hour ago I hadn't known any of this. I'd only gone to Clifford's Clinic to investigate Marcus. I never thought my actions would lead me to something so sinister."Mom was sick," I whispered finally, breaking the silence, and Derek swallowed hard."I remember Dad telling me the story of how she passed. Even his late brother confirmed it was nothing serious. What
Violet:Marcus's grin faltered for half a second, but he didn't back down. If anything, he grew bolder, his hand grabbing mine and sending a few of my already-picked books tumbling to the floor."We dated for three years, and I refuse to believe you've moved on." He stepped closer, his breath dangerously close, his grip tightening around my hurting hand. "V, it can only be me. How can you not see it?"Only him. Was he delusional or what? I would rather marry a madman than entangle myself a second time with a treacherous snake like him."Tomorrow is Val's, and I came to ask you to be my woman. I promise to post for you, take pictures, and give you that couple's blog you always wanted.""Oh." A low sound escaped my lips before I could hold it back. "Couple blog... I forgot about that." A half chuckle slipped out."It doesn't matter. I'll make all the preparations. How about I get you that camera you love?" I looked up at Marcus, and for the first time since the breakup, I felt I was fin
Violet:The cab dropped me off outside Liam's apartment building, my hands clenching my phone hard. I was trembling for reasons I didn't fully understand, and had almost run off without paying when the driver softly called me back. The pitiful look on his face was all he gave me as I ran up the stairs. But as my hand reached for the half-closed door, words hit me."You cloned Violet's phone?" It was Derek's voice. Instinctively, I paused, my legs refusing to move forward, my ears straining to hear more. Every word Liam and Derek said, I heard it all, my body trembling with every reveal, my eyes slowly falling to the phone in my own hand. Liam didn't justify his actions; what was there to justify? We'd promised not to meddle, but every time he did, and just maybe I'd been stupid again to think it was for my own good. Now, standing before his door, I felt stupid.I'd thought he was better than Marcus. I'd had countless dreams where I wished we hadn't started like a one-night stand, mome
Liam:Derek came back without Caleb and without the fruit I'd painfully asked for. The look on his face as he stumbled through the door and slumped onto the couch carried a trace of unwillingness. He didn't say anything, just dropped the car keys on the table with a noise that irritated the ears."Where's the intern?" I asked, half unamused by his lack of competence."You can cancel today's session, and that pretty face won't hold it against you." He still had the guts to joke."What do you mean, cancel? You know that'll earn me an earful from Whitfield." Derek didn't look like he cared. He just shrugged, then sat up and leaned closer, his eyes tracing down to my phone and back to my face."Why are you still cloning her phone?" It was a question, but it carried so much behind it."Of course, to see what Marcus is up to," I replied, but that wasn't enough."Yeah, sure," Derek scoffed. "This is going to come back and bite you in the face, and I hate to tell you, but I bumped into Amara,
Violet:Every piece of information I could lay my hands on was precious. Ask him about his father. I'd read it so many times the words had forged too many different shapes in my head. Marcus was no orphan, no child with a deadbeat father like I am. He'd rarely mentioned his family, but the few times he did, his voice carried no resentment, none of the weight of a child who'd grown up in an unhealthy environment.I'd had to work most of my life. From the moment I was able to, I followed my mother to the dollar store and sat quietly like a mouse beneath the counter while she bargained prices with unreasonable people, still forcing a smile afterward. Life was hard. My father had the means, but it never reached us. How could it, when his mistress was far more important than the well-being of his family? Moreover, someone like me, who'd had to work her way up, certainly had to kiss goodbye to a lot of comfort, but that wasn't the case with Marcus, who spent more on a skincare routine than
Violet:I'd weighed every option the night before sending the lead I'd gathered to Liam. I wasn't only not supposed to be investigating my own patient; Whitfield now knew I'd been up to something, and not knowing which side she was on, it was only right I handed it to someone else—anyone but Amara. Just like me, there were some boundaries she dared not cross, not because she couldn't but because she shouldn't, and that's one reason she was keeping whatever she'd found out to herself. After the breakup, I'd expected Liam to become hostile like Marcus. Pick up a new girlfriend, or announce a new relationship altogether. After all, that's what celebrities do after a breakup. But Liam was calm. He hadn't replied to any of the thousands of comments under the supposed breakup post. Many blogs had already begun speculating that the problem had come from my end, which I'd expected; after all, I was the one who'd nearly been tagged a puck bunny. But then something strange happened.A blurry im
