Penulis: River of Slumber

Chapter 1

Penulis: River of Slumber
Moonlight shone against Shadow Pack's territory like scattered silver.

I was carrying the herbs I had just gathered. My fingertips were covered in bloody cuts from thorns.

For three days, I had searched every cliff and ridge across the northern territory before finally piecing together this formula to calm a raging wolf spirit.

The door to the werewolf council hall was slightly ajar. Voices drifted out.

"Noel, you really do treat her differently," a shewolf said. "I heard she was almost torn apart by a rogue when she was little. You were the one who saved her, weren't you?"

That was Nancy Lindt, the daughter of a Shadow Pack elder. She was Noel Leighton's future Luna.

"I'm only keeping her around for fun," Noel replied casually.

My grip tightened around the herb stems.

"For fun?" Nancy chuckled. "But she seems to take it seriously. I heard she's been searching for herbs for you without sleeping for three entire days. Humans are interesting. Show them a little kindness, and they'll be grateful for a lifetime."

"She knows her place." There was a trace of mockery in Noel's voice.

"Leah isn't like other shewolves trying to climb into my bed. She knows where she stands. During the contract period, she'll do her job and behave. Once it ends, she'll leave. We won't owe each other a thing."

Nancy laughed joyfully.

"So when you saved her back then, it was just so you'd have a free caretaker?"

"What else?" Noel's tone turned cold. "A werewolf raising a human girl. I feel embarrassed just saying it. If she weren't useful–"

I didn't listen any further.

I gently set the herbs by the door and turned around. I stepped back into the moonlight.

The open wounds on my palm were still bleeding, but I felt nothing.

So all those nights I stayed by his side and all the times I kept watch while his wolf spirit raged meant nothing to Noel. I was merely useful to him.

"Leah."

Noel's voice suddenly came from behind me.

I turned around. He had come out at some point. The moonlight carved sharp lines along his harsh features.

Nancy stood just inside the doorway. She watched us with a knowing smile.

"Why did you leave the herbs at the door? Bring them in."

I lowered my gaze and walked back obediently. I bent down to pick up the herbs.

When I stood upright, Noel noticed the wounds on my palm. Some parts had already scabbed, while others still bled.

His brows twitched a little.

"You ended up like this in just three days?" He asked calmly. "Go inside. Let Nancy bandage it."

"It's fine." I handed him the herbs. I was surprised by how calm my voice sounded. "I can take care of the wounds myself. If there aren't any other orders, I'll go back and rest."

Noel accepted the herbs but suddenly grabbed my wrist. He opened my injured palm under the moonlight.

Nancy walked over in her heels, glanced at my hand, and covered her mouth while chuckling.

"Oh my, it's this bad? Noel, Leah works herself to the bone for you, and you're just going to stand there and watch?"

Noel ignored her and stared into my eyes. "Does it hurt?"

I looked up at him before gently pulling away. "It doesn't. Don't worry, Noel. It won't affect my ability to fulfill the contract."

Noel's frown deepened.

He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he only looked deeply at me.

Nancy stepped forward and slipped her arm through his.

"Since Leah says she's fine, don't worry about it. By the way, our marking ceremony is next week. You promised to help me pick out a dress."

I lowered my head, quietly took two steps back, and turned around to leave.

Back in my small room, I rinsed the wounds on my palm with cold water.

The clear water in the basin turned light red, and I replaced it with fresh water again and again.

I didn't know how much time had passed when there was a knock on my door.

It was Noel. His expression was cold.

"Take this." He set a medical kit on the sill. "You're still in charge of setting up the marking ceremony. Don't ruin it because you hurt your hand."

I looked at the medical kit and nodded. "Thank you, Noel."

"And one more thing." Noel turned around and suddenly stopped. "What I said earlier–"

"I heard it." I cut him off calmly. "Don't worry. I've always known my place. There are only three days left on the contract. I'll fulfill it properly."

Noel froze for a moment.

He stared at me in silence for a long while. He then turned around and walked away without looking back. "I'm glad you're aware."

I closed the door and placed the medical kit on the table, but I didn't open it.

Leaning against the door, I slowly slid down to the floor. I pressed my injured palm against my chest.

There were only three days left until my contract with them expired.

What Noel didn't know was that I would forget everything that had happened over the past few years and return to the human world.

After hearing what I said, Arthur fell silent for a long time. Finally, he said, "Then I'll just stay here and keep helping you."I turned to look at him. There was something in his eyes. It reminded me of something bright, warm, and soft."Suit yourself," I said with a smile. That evening, a man walked into the shop.He had on a white shirt and glasses. He seemed like a well-mannered gentleman."Do you have any white roses left?" he asked.I pointed to the corner. "Over there. Pick what you like."He picked a bouquet, paid, but didn't leave."I pass by here every day and see you sitting outside in the sun." He sounded a little embarrassed. "Anyway, would you like to grab a coffee sometime?"I was stunned for a moment. I smiled."Sure."From that day on, there was one more person in my life.He was Eric Reynolds, a middle school teacher. He came by once a week to buy flowers, and each time, we'd chat for a bit.Later, he started asking me out to dinners, movies, and walks

A year later, my floral boutique still looked nearly the same. There was only an addition of a small garden out front, along with two rattan chairs and a little round table.Jenny still brought me all kinds of news."That vampire count got punished by the Vampire Council. I heard he kept exposing himself to sunlight and damaged his core. He lost a lot of his powers."I kept trimming flowers and didn't look up."That werewolf Alpha? His pack fell apart. He refused to formally mark his fated mate, so the elders held a vote and exiled him."I paused for a moment."That elven prince's situation is even worse." Jenny lowered her voice. "The elders stripped him of his status as the next in line to the throne. He's an ordinary elf now, and he wanders around the human world every day."I finally looked up. "He's in the human world?"Jenny tilted her chin toward the door. "Across the street. Under that tree. He's been there for a year."I looked over. There was a plane tree across the

When Noel visited again, he didn't come with herbs. Instead, he brought a document."What's this?" I asked."A marking certificate from Werewolf City Hall." His voice was deep. He sounded a little nervous. "If you sign it, you'll be my legal mate. I'll formally mark you and make you the Luna of Shadow Pack."I flipped through it briefly before handing it back."Do you know what conditions are required for a human to be marked by a werewolf?"He frowned. "Yes. Mutual consent, confirmed feelings, and approval from the council of elders.""Which one of those do we meet?"He didn't answer.I pushed the document back to him. "I don't remember you. I don't have feelings for you. We already failed the first condition.""Feelings can grow over time," he said anxiously."But I don't want to take that time," I replied while looking at him. "I looked into some things. I don't know the full details, but I know the three of you said certain things. Things that made me choose to sign that

A month later, I opened a small floral boutique in the human world's Neutral Zone.It wasn't big. It was only 215 square feet but packed with all kinds of flowers. I named it Nameless Floral Boutique. In the mornings, I restocked flowers. In the afternoons, I sold them. When there were no customers, I sat by the door and soaked in the sun.The nurse who took care of me, Jenny Nelson, stopped by from time to time to bring me food."Do you really not plan on going back?" she asked while helping me arrange some flowers. "Those three men have been coming to see you every day this past month."I knew.Augustus came every day. He stood under the tree across from my shop from morning until night. He never came in. He just stood there and watched.Noel came three times a week. Every time, he brought herbs, saying they were unique to the werewolf pack and good for the body.I accepted them and passed them along to the old lady next door.Arthur came the least often, but every time he

When I woke up, my head was pounding.I opened my eyes to a white ceiling. The air smelled of disinfectant."You're awake?" A woman in a nurse's uniform leaned over me. "This is a human hospital in the Neutral Zone. You were brought in while unconscious. Do you remember your name? Do you remember what happened?"I opened my mouth. What was my name? There was nothing in my mind.It felt like everything had been wiped clean."You don't remember?" The nurse's expression shifted. "Please wait here. I'll get the doctor."The door burst open.Three men barged in.One had pale skin and red eyes. He was staring directly at me.Another was tall. His pupils contracted into a vertical slit. The last had silver hair and was strikingly handsome, but his expression was frantic. They all spoke at the same time."Leah!""Leah, how are you?""Leah, listen to me–"The nurse stepped in front of them. "Gentlemen, this is the human world. We're in the Neutral Zone. Please abide by the rule

The Tree of Life in the Elven Kingdom glowed with a faint silver light beneath the moon, but that light was fading. For three months, its leaves had been turning yellow one by one. It was a sign that the very lifeline of the elven race was withering away.I stood beneath the tree and stared at the dying leaves. There was a tired look in my eyes.Three days ago, I had learned from the elven prince that only the witch's spring water deep within the forbidden forest could save the Tree of Life. The price was ten years of my lifespan.I agreed. Now, having just returned from the forbidden land, I held a crystal vial filled with spring water that glowed with a faint blue.A single strand of gray hair had appeared on my head."Your Highness, I've brought back the spring water." I handed the vial to the elven prince, Arthur Thrall.Arthur took it. A flicker of surprise appeared in his eyes before it was quickly masked by indifference. His gaze lingered for a brief moment on the gray
