Chapter 2

Autor: River of Slumber
Just as I drifted into a hazy sleep, the cross-shaped mark on the side of my neck suddenly burned intensely.

That mark had been left by the vampire count, Augustus Renault.

Whenever he needed me, he would summon me through the searing pain.

By the time I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the castle, the setting sun was casting shimmering colors through the stained glass.

In the great hall, Augustus lounged lazily on a velvet sofa.

He looked at me with a hint of amusement in his blood-red eyes.

"I haven't summoned you in three days, yet you seem to have held out pretty well."

"Your Excellency, you must've had your reasons," I replied calmly.

"Is that so?" Augustus suddenly reached out, grabbed the back of my neck, and pulled me closer. His nose nearly brushed against mine. "Then why did I hear you've been running errands for the elves and the werewolves these past several days? Leah, you've been quite busy."

I could feel his cold breath against my skin.

I didn't move away. "We signed a three-party contract. It's written clearly. I serve the other two races as well."

"I know." Augustus released me and leaned back. There was a flicker of displeasure in his eyes. "But I don't like you carrying someone else's scent. Go wash up. Change your clothes, then come back."

"Okay," I answered softly and turned around to leave.

The moment I stepped out of the hall, I ran into a stunning woman.

She was Lilian Langford, a noble vampiress who had been visiting the castle rather frequently these days.

She looked me up and down and covered her mouth before chuckling. "Leah, right? I've heard about you. You're the blood servant Augustus raised. Are you supplying him blood through a contract now?"

I didn't respond. I simply stepped aside to let her pass.

But Lilian didn't let me go. She leaned in and lowered her voice. "Do you know what Augustus says about you? The other night, when he was drunk, he told me–"

She paused deliberately. She was clearly pleased when my lashes trembled slightly.

"This is what he said. Leah? She's more obedient than the other blood servants I keep. The moment I summon her, she offers her wrist herself. I don't even have to bother trying to bite."

Lilian let out a chuckle. "Tell me, is that praise or an insult?"

Of course, it was an insult.

Although I knew I meant little to Augustus, my face still turned pale for a moment.

"Ms. Langford, if there's nothing else I can do for you, please excuse me."

With that, I fled.

When I reached the corner, I couldn't take it anymore. I braced a hand against the wall.

I'd thought I was at least somewhat special to Augustus.

After all, when I was first taken in, he was the first to reach out to me with kindness.

Whenever I hid in a dark tree hollow after being wronged, he was always the first to find me and wipe away my tears.

But now it seemed I was nothing more than an unusually obedient blood servant to him.

That was all I meant to him.

"Leah."

Augustus's voice suddenly came from behind me.

I quickly composed myself and turned around to curtsy. "Your Excellency."

He walked over and frowned when he saw my pale face. "Are you feeling unwell?"

"No."

"Then why do you look so awful?" He reached out to touch me, but I instinctively stepped back.

His hand froze midair. There was a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Are you avoiding me?"

"I wouldn't dare."

"Wouldn't dare? Are you reluctant to be close to me?" He stepped closer, trapping me between himself and the wall.

"What did Lilian say to you just now?"

I lifted my head and met his gaze. "She said Your Excellency described me as being more obedient than your other blood servants."

Augustus's pupils contracted slightly.

"Were those your exact words?" I asked calmly.

He was silent for a moment. He then scoffed. "What's the matter? Did that upset you?"

I didn't answer.

He lifted a hand, gripped my chin, and forced my head up.

"Was I wrong? Didn't you come the moment I summoned you? Didn't you cut your own wrist? Leah, you grew up by my side. You should understand this better than anyone. We vampires don't need emotions. We only need blood."

His fingertips brushed the side of my neck. The cold sensation sent a shiver down my spine.

"So don't wear that wounded expression." He released me. His tone turned cold. "Don't forget your place. Do what you're supposed to do. It doesn't matter what I think of you, does it?"

I lowered my gaze to hide every trace of emotion within them.

"It doesn't," I said.

I turned around and walked away, but I could still feel Augustus's gaze fixed on my back the entire time.

I didn't look back at all.

After hearing what I said, Arthur fell silent for a long time. Finally, he said, "Then I'll just stay here and keep helping you."I turned to look at him. There was something in his eyes. It reminded me of something bright, warm, and soft."Suit yourself," I said with a smile. That evening, a man walked into the shop.He had on a white shirt and glasses. He seemed like a well-mannered gentleman."Do you have any white roses left?" he asked.I pointed to the corner. "Over there. Pick what you like."He picked a bouquet, paid, but didn't leave."I pass by here every day and see you sitting outside in the sun." He sounded a little embarrassed. "Anyway, would you like to grab a coffee sometime?"I was stunned for a moment. I smiled."Sure."From that day on, there was one more person in my life.He was Eric Reynolds, a middle school teacher. He came by once a week to buy flowers, and each time, we'd chat for a bit.Later, he started asking me out to dinners, movies, and walks

A year later, my floral boutique still looked nearly the same. There was only an addition of a small garden out front, along with two rattan chairs and a little round table.Jenny still brought me all kinds of news."That vampire count got punished by the Vampire Council. I heard he kept exposing himself to sunlight and damaged his core. He lost a lot of his powers."I kept trimming flowers and didn't look up."That werewolf Alpha? His pack fell apart. He refused to formally mark his fated mate, so the elders held a vote and exiled him."I paused for a moment."That elven prince's situation is even worse." Jenny lowered her voice. "The elders stripped him of his status as the next in line to the throne. He's an ordinary elf now, and he wanders around the human world every day."I finally looked up. "He's in the human world?"Jenny tilted her chin toward the door. "Across the street. Under that tree. He's been there for a year."I looked over. There was a plane tree across the

When Noel visited again, he didn't come with herbs. Instead, he brought a document."What's this?" I asked."A marking certificate from Werewolf City Hall." His voice was deep. He sounded a little nervous. "If you sign it, you'll be my legal mate. I'll formally mark you and make you the Luna of Shadow Pack."I flipped through it briefly before handing it back."Do you know what conditions are required for a human to be marked by a werewolf?"He frowned. "Yes. Mutual consent, confirmed feelings, and approval from the council of elders.""Which one of those do we meet?"He didn't answer.I pushed the document back to him. "I don't remember you. I don't have feelings for you. We already failed the first condition.""Feelings can grow over time," he said anxiously."But I don't want to take that time," I replied while looking at him. "I looked into some things. I don't know the full details, but I know the three of you said certain things. Things that made me choose to sign that

A month later, I opened a small floral boutique in the human world's Neutral Zone.It wasn't big. It was only 215 square feet but packed with all kinds of flowers. I named it Nameless Floral Boutique. In the mornings, I restocked flowers. In the afternoons, I sold them. When there were no customers, I sat by the door and soaked in the sun.The nurse who took care of me, Jenny Nelson, stopped by from time to time to bring me food."Do you really not plan on going back?" she asked while helping me arrange some flowers. "Those three men have been coming to see you every day this past month."I knew.Augustus came every day. He stood under the tree across from my shop from morning until night. He never came in. He just stood there and watched.Noel came three times a week. Every time, he brought herbs, saying they were unique to the werewolf pack and good for the body.I accepted them and passed them along to the old lady next door.Arthur came the least often, but every time he

When I woke up, my head was pounding.I opened my eyes to a white ceiling. The air smelled of disinfectant."You're awake?" A woman in a nurse's uniform leaned over me. "This is a human hospital in the Neutral Zone. You were brought in while unconscious. Do you remember your name? Do you remember what happened?"I opened my mouth. What was my name? There was nothing in my mind.It felt like everything had been wiped clean."You don't remember?" The nurse's expression shifted. "Please wait here. I'll get the doctor."The door burst open.Three men barged in.One had pale skin and red eyes. He was staring directly at me.Another was tall. His pupils contracted into a vertical slit. The last had silver hair and was strikingly handsome, but his expression was frantic. They all spoke at the same time."Leah!""Leah, how are you?""Leah, listen to me–"The nurse stepped in front of them. "Gentlemen, this is the human world. We're in the Neutral Zone. Please abide by the rule

The Tree of Life in the Elven Kingdom glowed with a faint silver light beneath the moon, but that light was fading. For three months, its leaves had been turning yellow one by one. It was a sign that the very lifeline of the elven race was withering away.I stood beneath the tree and stared at the dying leaves. There was a tired look in my eyes.Three days ago, I had learned from the elven prince that only the witch's spring water deep within the forbidden forest could save the Tree of Life. The price was ten years of my lifespan.I agreed. Now, having just returned from the forbidden land, I held a crystal vial filled with spring water that glowed with a faint blue.A single strand of gray hair had appeared on my head."Your Highness, I've brought back the spring water." I handed the vial to the elven prince, Arthur Thrall.Arthur took it. A flicker of surprise appeared in his eyes before it was quickly masked by indifference. His gaze lingered for a brief moment on the gray
