Drew swept me off my feet without a second thought into the car, placing my head softly on the head rest.

“My baby..” i kept repeating, my fingers scratching the corners of Drew's seat.

Drew then dipped his hand into his pocket and reached for his phone.

He took in a deep breath and contemplated on dialing the number on the phone.

“Mr Derrick…., he paused.”

“Mrs Rebecca right now is in a critical condition and I'm taking her to the family hospital. Your presence will be of huge importance.” He said rigidly.

But his eyes had sooner dimmed and his jaws clenched tightly. He then returned the phone to his pocket.

“You just finished speaking with my husband Drew, is everything alright?” I asked worriedly.

His eyes locked with mine as he stole a quick glance at me through the rear mirror.

“He is in a meeting.” He said rigidly once again.

“Its thanksgiving, and its a holiday. So there are no meetings.” I furrowed my eyebrows saying.

“Tell me drew, is my husband in trouble?, is he fine? Because i know Derrick, he does not take matters like this lightly.”

Drew scoffed. Taking a sharp bend into the hospital, he swiftly led us to the parking slot.

He stepped right down and opened the door.

“Mrs Rebecca,” he said softly for the first time, his baritone ringing in my ears.

“Your husband is safe and fine, but you, you are the one who is not.”he paused, taking my hand.

I took in a sharp breath as his skin touched mine. Taken aback by his gesture, our eyes locked in once again and those green pearls penetrated my soul.

“I need you to be strong for your baby and for yourself, no matter what the condition is.”he said.

I shook my head momentarily, fighting back the wave of emotions that bottled in me and nodded my head.

He took me by my arm and led me out of the car.

I held unto his hands tightly when the nurses sighted me from afar with the blood stain embedded in my bright pink dress.

I gave his hand a tighter squeeze.

“ Drew, I'm scared…”

“i need Derrick..”i muttered.

my heart sank as the nurses approached even further, but i felt his hand wrap around mine softly as he stared into my eyes innocently.

“There is no way, the strongest and most stunning woman I've ever met can ever be scared., not while i’m there to protect her.” He said, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

“Ma'am please you need to get on the bed.” The nurse urged.

I swallowed, extending a weak questioning smile to him.

His words were truly heartfelt. I thought. A bit too heartfelt in fact.

“Please check up on Derrick.” I tugged on to his fingers.

“Thank you.”i whispered.

Immediately, they placed me on a mobile bed and as they rolled me away, our hands untangled.

“Don't worry ma'am, you will be fine and you will get to be with your husband again.” The nurse said.

I smiled uneasily. and then she pierced a syringe into my flesh.

I took in a deep breath as i felt the sedative which was injected into my blood kick in. till it all went blank.

-

I sat up fully clothed in the hospital wears on the bed,

I quickly assessed my body and the blood stain was gone.

“Shes awake..” a nurse said,

“Hows my baby?”The words flew out of my mouth non-hesitantly.

She smiled briefly without uttering a word. As she opened the door, Drew let himself in.

“Your baby is in good condition, and you are free to go.” He said softly, handing me the freshest tulip flowers i had ever received.

He then leaned in to plant a kiss on my forehead but i turned my face, causing his lips to brush past my cheeks.

My toes curled as his lips made slight contact with my skin.

“Im sorry ma'am.” He said. His tone once rigid again.

What was he thinking?

“Prepare the vehicle, i have thanksgiving to meet up.” I said coldly.

As i watched him exit the hospital room, suddenly, i felt the need to reach out to him, tell him i didn't mean it and ask him to lay over my head.

This is not good.

i immediately reached for my phone and dialed derricks number.

Maybe it was the guilt from sharing a moment with drew hanging on my neck but i silently prayed the call had fallen into voicemail.

“Rebecca..” i heard him say over the phone. His voice tight.

“Der ..um…Derrick..” i mumbled.

“you naughty boy..” A female voice giggled over the phone.

I felt my throat run dry.

I swallowed. Cancelling every side thought as i clung unto the phone tightly.

“Derrick… you were meant to come see me at the hospital.” My voice cracked.

“you were smart to have successfully terminated the pregnancy.” He said brashly.

“Its…its not terminated yet..” i said, barely in whispers. “Its thanksgiving Derrick…and I'm thankful for this gift,” i paused saying.

“Don't make me terminate this baby. I’m begging you.”

“Well you can kiss this marriage a goodbye then.”He said, ending the call abruptly.

The phone slipped from my hand as his final words fell on my ears.

My mouth opened to ask all the questions like how, why, what , and where but, nothing came out. “Hello, Rebecca,” he smiled saying. Somebody wake me up because what manner of sorcery is this? I remember. With a carefully sorted bouquet in his hands and unsure spirit, he introduced himself. Somehow, by the end of the day, all i could see in his eyes was a very certain and pleased young man. Ready to make his arranged marriage work. Then the cold breeze blast acr

“Yes. A mafia home.” He answered.“How can you be so sure?” I asked.“This is one of the perks of being a driver i suppose.”“Thats why the other cab drivers actively refused to take me there, isn't it?”And he nodded affirmatively.“And you are not scared?”“Well lets say, a tough man like me has a list of things he fears, but a fellow man is not one them.” He grinned, holding on to his steering wheel firmly. His smile was easy to return, so i smiled back.“Well i had no idea it was a mafia home to be honest,” i sighed, leaning my head on the door. “I was meant to pick up a friends car from there, but i don't know. He never really came across to me as a person involved with the mafia.”“Who?” He asked. “Oh, a good friend of mine, his name is Drew.” I smiled at the thought of him. “He is the baby's father?” He teased. “Oh no, no he isn't.” I massaged my belly saying. “Where is the baby's father then?, surely, no man can leave a fine woman like you.”“Its complicated.” I swallowed

I led mom to her room, tucking her gently into the bed. “You only need to call me, and ill be here.” I said. “Faster than your dads omelette?” She teased, in her brittle attempt to make lighter of the situation. I kissed her cheeks saying. “Faster than dads omelette.”She closed her weary eyes and soon fell asleep. taking in deep breaths, i pulled myself from her, then shut the door behind me quietly. If there was anybody i knew i needed to speak with right now, it was Drew. He was the only person who saw the inevitable coming, but how?I increased my pace as i hopped down the stairs. Before regaining my property, finding dad has now become my top priority. I thought articulately. But for starters, i had no idea where to search first. Series of thoughts clashed in my head, banging heavily against one another like a tambourine as i tried to process what the hell was going on. “Have a seat Rebecca,” Derrick said, unflinching.I couldn't tear my eyes away from the monster i was staring at, but i moved accordingly. Reaching for one of the kitchen stools. Mom sat tied to a chair, her lips were sealed so only her eyes did the talking. And from the look on her eyes, she was going through a rollercoaster of pain, stress and heavy tiredness. My eyes welled up immediately, soaking up my cheeks. How could he be this cruel to mom? If he did this to mom what about dad?Dad, where was Dad?“Derrick,” i swallowed. “where is my dad?” But then, mom shook her head erratically, as though trying to tell me something. Her gesture pulled a string on my heart. “What is she saying?,” “what is she trying to say?” I cried. “Take the tape off her, please!” I hovered around him saying,“For goodness sake Derrick, what is this truly

(Back to present.)The clock spun around so quick that suddenly, minutes passed into hours and hours turned into days. There was no call from Drew, neither was there any sign from Derrick. Just me, my growing baby, the maid and the walls. “Karen,” i called the maid, who seemed to work tirelessly. “You work so hard, you should take a day off.” I said to her. “I couldn't leave you all alone here, you have no one by your side, Ma'am.” She added.Ouch. I thought i was aware of that, didn't know i needed a reminder.“You barely eat, you barely move around. Hell, You don't even speak with anyone.”“I may just be an ordinary maid, but i know loneliness when i see one.”“tch,” i kissed my teeth. “Snooping around?, Thats not what you are being paid for Karen,” i said with a tired voice.“I know,” she knelt beside me saying. Her cheeks puffy and round, with a petite frame and plaited two cornrows, she looked nothing older than twenty. “But its because i care about you ma'am,” she paus

What!” I shrieked. “Theres no way you are going to tell him that.” “Why are you going to lie?” I snorted.“Well watch me.” He said, storming out of the house. Was it his plan to drive me crazy? I held on to the railings of the staircase tightly for stability while my head spun like a rollercoaster. A Divorce?, (Back to the day before Derricks wedding to Rebecca.)“Oh my God, Derrick,” i flung my hand to cover my mouth in amazement at a bracelet he got me.“These are so gorgeous., i love them. Thank you!” I exclaimed happily. Running my fingers into the water fountain from where we sat, we watched the decorators do their thing.“Thank you, for loving them.” He snickered. “But most importantly Rebecca, thank you for not making this feel like an arranged marriage.”“I feel like i have known you all my life,” he continued. “And i promise to make this work.”“And i,…” i was about to repeat my vow when we were interrupted. “If its not the charming bride and groom to be,” the event
