"Norman, give me your most expensive bottle of mineral water!"

Someone bumped into my lower back inside the convenience shop, and I jolted awake.

After grabbing the bottle of water, Maya Fairweather shot me a wary glare. She rushed out of the shop and headed straight to a lounge chair outside.

Sitting there was none other than Noah Reed, the heir to the Bellaris' most powerful family, who was pale and suffering from heatstroke. Maya set the water down beside him, pulled out some tissues, and gently wiped the sweat from his face.

Noticing how anxious she looked, I was certain she had been reborn too.

Just as I suspected, Maya turned around and blocked my view of Noah. "Lumiere, hurry up and go to the classroom to fill out the application form. I'll take care of Mr. Reed. You're just getting in the way."

I looked at her coldly. "Relax. I didn't plan on taking care of him either."

After hearing that, she clearly didn't believe me. So, she scoffed. "Yeah, right! In our previous life, you—"

Maya caught herself and zipped her mouth shut, but I already knew what she meant.

In our previous life, Noah had proposed to me because I had taken care of him when he suffered from heatstroke, and he was deeply moved. I married into money, while Maya successfully enrolled in Kingsley University.

However, after graduation, she joined the rat race, whereas I lived comfortably as the pampered wife of a rich man. At our class reunion, her jealousy drove her to stab me.

Somehow, both of us had been reborn.

Several of our classmates nearby were well aware of how stingy Maya was, and they whispered among themselves.

"Maya is usually unbelievably cheap. Yet, knowing the guy is the heir to the city's most powerful family, she suddenly buys a ten-dollar bottle of water. If he were just some regular guy, she wouldn't even spare him a glance. What a snob!"

As soon as their words fell, Maya stiffened and snapped back, "Shut up! I like to help people. What do you guys know? I don't want the Kingsley University spot anymore, Lumiere. I'll give it to you!"

Everyone gaped at her the moment those words rolled off her tongue.

Maya strutted over to me and said, "So what if you're attending Kingsley University? In today's world, even if you graduate from the most prestigious university, you still end up breaking your back for someone else. As a woman, the smartest thing you can do is marry a good man!"

Then, she shot me a cold look. "But that ship has sailed for you, so stop daydreaming!"

I nodded, too lazy to waste my breath on her, and left with the others to fill out our forms. Since she wanted so badly to marry into wealth, I might as well give her that chance.

Ten minutes later, we finished filling out our forms.

When we walked past Maya and Noah again, Noah gradually came to.

Noticing him stir, she threw herself at him and held his hand, her face filled with concern. "Are you feeling better, Mr. Reed? Should I rush you to the hospital?"

Meeting her overly anxious eyes, Noah froze for a moment.

Maya placed her hand on his forehead and fretted, "Are you still feeling unwell?"

"I'm alright now. Thank you. Were you the one who took care of me just now?" he inquired.

She smiled bashfully. "Yeah. I thought I'd stay with you for a while. If anything came up, I'd feel better being right here."

As soon as her words fell, a limousine pulled up at the school gates, and the Reed family's butler hurried over. Noticing his family's butler, Noah said, "Thank you for looking after me today, Maya. Let me treat you to a meal."

Maya's eyes lit up with excitement, and she nodded repeatedly.

Before she left, she shot me a contemptuous look. "Lumiere, you're destined to be a pathetic office lady for the rest of your life. I, on the other hand, am going to marry into wealth!"

I watched her strut off and let out a cold, derisive chuckle. I wondered if Maya seriously thought ordinary people like us could just marry into a wealthy family.

I walked in and felt around until I found a hidden compartment in a cabinet tucked away in the corner. There was a small jar inside, just as I expected. I took it out, twisted the lid open, and saw countless red strings packed together. My hands trembled. I had no idea how many young lives the Reeds had ruined with this twisted ritual over the years. I pulled out my lighter, and I was prepared to burn them all. Just then, Noah burst into the room. "Stop right there!"He yelled at me at the top of his lungs. "Put that down, Lumiere. If you burn them, I will see to it that you regret it for the rest of your life!"The very next second, I heard footsteps. Several police officers arrived and positioned themselves in front of me. "Have you lost your minds? Do you have any idea where you are? How dare you break into my family's estate with no evidence? I guess you don't plan on staying in Bellaris much longer, huh?" The police officers looked troubled and turned to me. "There will

As soon as my words fell, police sirens wailed outside. Noah let out a mirthless chuckle and looked at me. "So, you called the police. I underestimated you. But what do you think that's going to do?""It won't do much, but they can take me away from here," I replied. His hand closed around my throat as he leaned in to threaten me. "Even if you run to another country, I'll still find a way to drag you back. There isn't a place in this world you can hide from me."Maya snorted beside him. "That's right. Bitches like her need to be taught a lesson, Mr. Reed." When the police officers walked in and asked who made the call, I raised my hand. "Officer, I wanted to leave earlier, but the two of them wouldn't let me. They also tried to lock me up."Maya and Noah both denied it. I had expected nothing less. "It seems like this was just a misunderstanding then. Officer, could you please take me home?"Just then, Maya clutched the police officer's hand. "Officer, can you take me with you

"Lumiere?" Noah frowned.Maya nodded frantically. "That's right. Use her instead. She's right over there!"She raised her hand and pointed toward the corner where I stood. Noah motioned for his bodyguards to drag me over. He narrowed his eyes at me. "Lumiere… you were the one we wanted from the start. I have no idea why the person who saved me ended up being Maya."So, that was it. Having been given a second chance at life, I had noticed the strange look in Noah's eyes when he looked at me the moment he came to. Clearly, they had planned all of this in my previous life.Maya was relieved when she heard that. She scrambled to her feet and grasped my hand, yanking me forward. "Exactly. Lumiere is the better choice. She's smart, and her personal life is spotless. "I, on the other hand, grew up poor, and when I was little, I was assaulted by a few hooligans in my village. Your grandmother would never want a body like mine!"Noah glanced at her with thinly veiled disgust. Compared

I gaped at the woman in front of me. I had seen her before. In my previous life, I thought I had married for love. After marrying into the Reed family, I had often felt lightheaded. The Reeds' family physician had told me that I simply overworked and was too frail. Yet, as time went on, my symptoms only worsened.About a month later, I realized there were long stretches of time when I was completely unconscious. However, whenever I came to, I found myself in different places, as if my body was no longer mine.Sometimes, I came to in an office during a meeting. Other times, I snapped back to my senses in the backseat of a car. Yet, whenever I asked Noah about it, he would grab me by the throat and snarl, "Who gave you permission to wake up, you bitch?"That was when it hit me that Noah had been putting on an act all along. Soon after, the woman in black would come to my side. Not long after she arrived, my body felt as if it were being pierced by countless needles. The pain was u

Maya drifted in and out of consciousness several times throughout the ceremony. She leaned in and whispered into my ear threateningly, "This is my wedding, Lumiere. Don't you dare try anything!"I sneered inwardly. Maya sure was delusional.Soon, the ceremony ended, and I couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in my chest as I took in her condition. Hence, I planned to leave right after the ceremony. However, to my surprise, the moment I reached the door, two security guards stepped in front of me and blocked my way.I turned around and found Maya, who had already changed out of her wedding gown. She sauntered toward me with a smug curl at her lips. "You have some nerve, Lumiere. I didn't allow you to leave, so what makes you think you can?""Do you still need something? Because I'm going home," I asked.Maya seized my wrist and yanked me toward the car. "Of course I do! Since you've come all this way, I'll give you a tour of my new home."I frowned, clearly well aware that she wanted

Maya warned me, "Listen here, Lumiere. If you don't show up at my wedding, I have plenty of ways to drag you there myself!" Then, she spun on her heel and walked back into the crowd, inviting our classmates to her wedding. Everyone knew she was about to marry the heir to Bellaris' most powerful family. Hence, those who disliked her earlier didn't dare let it show now. This was the wedding of the heir to the most powerful family in Bellaris. Usually, ordinary people like us could never dream of attending it. Since Maya had personally invited them, they weren't about to say no."Maya, you and Mr. Reed are made for each other. You look so good together!""Don't forget your old classmates in the future, Mrs. Reed!"While listening to their sweet but empty compliments, I wondered whether they would ever get the chance to witness the truth with me.…Before I knew it, it was the day of Noah and Maya's wedding. Maya beamed with pride when she saw me. She was wearing a white coutur
