Happy Birthday Lucia!

LUCIA'S POV...

My room is very big, it is painted white that shone bright when the sun enters through the window. The space is too much.

I look around quietly in sadness. What was the need of this spacious room if I can’t walk?

My bed is opposite the floor to ceiling window, I can easily see the lake behind the house and the forest where the wolves go for hunting.

The door of my room opened with a bang interrupting my thoughts. It made me shiver a little. The sound was startling.

Brittney, my best friend danced in, dressed in a red formal dress and a pair of black heels. Her make-up was very pleasing to the eye. She was all dolled up, preparing for what?

I stared at her as she approached me humming a fine tune. Her looks were beyond exquisite. She looked alluring and ravishing.

"Lucia..." she called my name in that sweet tone again. I don't know why she does it but still she does it. When we first met the sound cringes me but I have gotten used to it, so used to it that I loved it so much and looked forward to hearing every time I see.

In case you are wondering why I am only in my head, it is because I am mute.

I lost my voice some months ago.

How sad right?

It's really sadden that I can't speak because of my illness but Bryan said the doctor had told him I will get better in no time and I hope so too.

"Baby, you won't believe what happened today. I got promoted at the office today. Its great news right?" Brittney spoke with enthusiasm. This is why I like her, love rather. She is always cheerful. No matter how depressing the atmosphere is, she lightens up the whole room once she steps in.

Before she entered, I was really sad, praying to get well and praying to die at same time.

And boom, Brittney walked in dancing. She doesn't know how to dance but there is this funny way she does it that always makes me smile. You can say Brittney is a clown.

Well, she is actually one.

I nodded at her with a big smile on my face.

"I look really beautiful right?" She asked again turning around to give me a good view of her alluring body.

I nodded at her vigorously this time. She was really beautiful. I used to say that she is the most beautiful girl in our pack till she told me I am more beautiful than her. I agreed with her when she said it but deep down I still say she is more beautiful.

I gave her a questioning look. I want to know why she is dressed up and where she was going to.

"Don't look at me like that. It's your birthday today. Don't you remember?" Brittney said a little loudly in anger.

I smiled more. I didn't realize it was my birthday at all.

A single tear rolled down from my eyes as I stared at her. She is truly my best friend.

Brittney has been the only one visiting me aside my husband, Bryan since I got sick.

Speaking of Bryan, he is not here yet. I wonder what he is doing that is taking his time. Oh yes I remember, he must be at the office now. After I fell ill, before I lost my voice, I asked my lawyer to transfer every of my property to Bryan two days after we got married.

I looked at the door every now and then as Brittney gave me stories of what happened at her office. She always talks about her office and her boss who is very handsome. She told me she fell for him but was quick to get over him because she heard he is married.

Brittney knows that I am anticipating the return of Bryan.

"Luci, don't worry he would be back soon. You know it's not easy running a company."

A single tear rolled down from my eyes. Brittney wiped it away and kissed my cheeks.

She is a sweetheart and a god sent. I don't know what I would have done without her. She has been so amazing and has never left my side. She comes over very early in the morning before leaving for work and comes over at night before going home.

She is such a sweet friend.

I smiled at her.

She smiled back at me.

"I would have called Bryan if I had his number. Let me get the butler to call him, okay?" I nodded at her.

She walked out of the room, swinging her hips humming a happy birthday tune as she walked away.

When she got to the door, she smiled at me and walked away.

The look and smile made me wonder if she was truly going out to make a call. The girl has always been mischievous. She might be hiding a gift and needs the butler to bring it over.

In no time, she walked in with the butler pushing a trolley behind her. I knew it. She is so predictable.

She sent the butler off and pushed the trolley close to my bed. She opened it slowly.

It was a small cake. Enough for the two of us.

Another reason I and Brittney have clicked easily when we just met was because of this very cake in front of me.

Banana flavored cake.

Bryan is allergic to bananas. So we don't have those at home.

Brittney must have ordered it or made it herself. She usually brings me a few banana flavored cakes when Bryan is not around. Sometimes she brings a bunch of banana and leaves them in my room. Bryan gets angry though but because of my condition he allows me eat them, he even wears gloves to feed them to me to avoid him getting rashes.

These two people are the best in my life. I love them both so much.

They have been with me through all the storms that life has thrown my way. They have shown me that life can be beautiful.

"Happy birthday Lucia." her smile made me smile.

She rolled the wheel of my bed to get me in a sitting position and brought the cake with the two candles on it.

"Make a wish baby girl. Don't forget me in your wishes."

I smiled and closed my eyes and made a wish.

When I opened my eyes she was staring at me waiting for me to finish my wish diligently.

I blew out the candles. Brittney helped me cut the cake.

Aside not being able to speak, I was also paralyzed. I can only lay on my back.

She brought a bite to my mouth and fed it to me. I ate it happily. The happiness in my heart was radiated by my eyes. Just by looking at my eyes you would know that I was very happy, though it had other emotions right now joy was dominating.

She fed me big bites and I chewed it gently, savoring all the flavors and the sweetness of the cake. After helping me eat the cake, she rolled down my bed.

"Lucia, I baked this cake myself. How is it?" she asked me and stared at my eyes anxiously.

I wanted to throw back my head and laugh at her but I could not. The expression she had just now was more than funny. It was beautiful. She looked like a little kitten. What a good day to humor the almighty Brittney.

I gave her the loveliest smile that I could muster up from the bottom of my heart.

Seeing the way she smiled back at me, I knew she understood what I meant with the smile.

"Lucia..." she called out my name and shook with laughter. I continued to smile at her. I am really very happy for her.

"I made it last night. I did it in a hurry because I was sleepy. Though it was difficult I finally did Lucia. I can bake properly now. In the future I will make you more cakes."

I smiled more as I was very happy, unaware of the impending storm that hung above my head.

Brittney began telling me how she started baking the cake last night and ended it six hours later which was past midnight.

I heard footsteps coming towards the direction of my room, Brittney heard them too.

We turned to the door to see who it was.

It's my husband Bryan. He looks so worn out. I guess it's because he has not been having enough rest because of the company.

"Happy birthday honey." his deep baritone voice rang in the room. He was still standing at the entrance but his voice sounded like it was beside my ears.

I smiled brightly and foolishly. I looked at him in glee. He is so handsome.

If I were not paralyzed, I would have rushed into his arms and kissed him.

"Hello Brittney." he greeted her the usual way, just saying hello with a smile and that's all. Sometimes I think he hates her because the smile he always gave seemed forced.

Bryan strode to my bed. A few steps away from my bed, he halted and eyed Brittney. I guess he found out already.

He smiled at me without a word, he brought out his hand gloves and wore them.

He sat by my side and whispered I love you forever in my ears. He kissed my cheeks.

He brought out a necklace from his pocket and said. "Here's my gift for you."

Both my eyes and that of Brittney widened in surprise.

My mother's necklace!

My mother gave me this necklace on my eighth birthday. It was a pair with the bracelet that is on my hand right now.

The necklace got lost some time ago when I and Brittney were playing in the pool. We looked for it everywhere but could not find it.

He helped me wore it and stood up and said. "This is my last gift to you Lucia".

What! I screamed in my head.

My jaw dropped down without warning, like I was not in control of it.

Before I could close my mouth, he walked towards Brittney and stood by her side.

I stared at him in confusion.

"Brittney and I are married." he said, dropping a bigger bomb.

I moved my face from his and stared straight at Brittney, seeking answers from her.

"Don't look at me like that. He is my mate so it's natural that he gets married to me." Brittney had nothing but smiles on her face.

Mate?

How can that be?
