Chapter 2

Author: Lumi
When Alistair finally reappeared, he stopped dead when he saw me.

His eyes flicked to the man beside me. "Why are you here?"

I blinked innocently and softened my voice. "This is an important day for you, isn't it? I came to congratulate you on the project."

His face darkened. "Don't tell me you sabotaged this. Are you punishing me because of Nika?"

I hurried to defend myself. "How could I possibly do that? You haven't let me work in five years. What contacts or resources could I even have? I can't believe you'd suspect me."

Tears were already gathering in my eyes.

The scene caught the attention of the reporters still at the event, and they quickly gathered around us.

Alistair studied me for a few seconds, then seemed to believe me. He gave a dismissive snort.

Nika clung to his side as the two of them walked away.

I watched them disappear through the ballroom doors without a word.

Only then did the man beside me introduce himself. "I'm Augustine."

I shook his hand. "Elena Caldwell."

That night, Nika's latest Instagram post popped up in my feed.

She was pressed against Alistair, one hand resting on his chest as she leaned up to kiss his cheek.

At the edge of the photo, Alistair's hand rested high on her bare thigh, just below the hem of her dress.

I blocked her, then opened my laptop to write. Before I could type a word, a text came in from an unknown number.

The message contained nothing but the name of a restaurant.

After reading the message, I grabbed my phone and left.

I took a rideshare to the restaurant and found Augustine waiting in the parking lot.

"What are you doing here? Are you here for dinner?"

Instead of answering, he wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me into a secluded corner.

My back hit the wall, and his broad chest blocked most of my view. "Don't move."

Peeking through the narrow space between his arm and the wall, I saw several reporters with cameras hurry past the restaurant entrance. It finally clicked. "You sent me the address?"

He nodded. "If you don't want them to photograph you, stay close to me."

I reached for his lapel, but my fingers accidentally slipped beneath his open jacket and brushed the firm muscles of his chest through his shirt.

He looked down at me. I quickly pulled my hand away.

He then led me to another spot, where I could finally see into the restaurant.

The place was nearly empty. I spotted Alistair at once, with Nika seated across from him.

Nika murmured something, then leaned across the table to wipe a drop of wine from the corner of his mouth.

Alistair did not pull away. Instead, he took her wrist and kissed her palm.

I took out my phone and recorded a short video.

Once I had enough footage, I slipped my phone back into my bag. "Thank you. I should go."

Augustine stopped me. "I asked you to meet me at a restaurant and didn't even feed you. I owe you dinner."

He pulled out his phone and called someone, probably his driver. "Pick up Ms. Caldwell on the west side of the restaurant. Stop and get her something to eat."

A sleek black sedan soon pulled up. Augustine opened the door for me and held a hand over my head as I got in.

Before closing the door, he said, "Good night."

It wasn't until we were well away from the restaurant that I realized how naturally Augustine had taken care of me.

And somehow, I'd forgotten to ask how he'd gotten my number.

By the next day, Alistair had lost everything.Westwood Group's share price had crashed, its funding had dried up, and operations had ground to a halt. Several of Alistair's most trusted executives had resigned as well.He sent me a single message. "Meet me."I ignored it.Half an hour later, he showed up in person. The arrogant man I'd once known now stood before me in wrinkled clothes, his eyes bloodshot."Elena." He took a step toward me. "I know I was wrong."Then, to my surprise, he dropped to his knees. "Please."I stared at him. This was the same man who had thrown me out of my own home for Nika. Now he knelt before me, broken and begging."I never thought you'd truly leave me." Alistair's voice was hoarse. "I knew you loved me. I knew that whatever I did, you'd always come back in the end. That was why I..."I finished his sentence. "That was why you thought you could keep hurting me."He was silent for a long moment. "I got too used to having you beside me. Elena, I finally un

I wiped away my tears and called my assistant. "Find out where my father was last seen. Check all security footage and call records. Don't miss anything."Within minutes, Caldwell News Group's entire network was searching for him.We checked transportation records, hotels, hospitals, and private security firms. Wherever my father had been, he must have left a trail.Beside me, Augustine made a call. "Check every vehicle entering or leaving the port. Focus on private warehouses. Once you narrow the area, pull all nearby surveillance footage."When he hung up, I looked at him. "Your people?"He hummed, not bothering to deny it.I frowned. "Who exactly are you?""Augustine."I glared at him. "Seriously? Now isn't the time for jokes."A faint smile crossed his face. "Investment, finance, security, logistics, and a few ventures that don't belong in a corporate annual report."That told me everything I needed to know. The billionaire I'd met was only one part of who Augustine really was.His

I had my assistant look into everything Nika had done over the past six months.I was only trying to identify her mysterious investor. Instead, I found something far more interesting.Nika and Alistair had known each other since well before he met me.It all started with a traffic accident Alistair happened to witness.Nika claimed she had run into the road to save a child and gotten hit by a car. Alistair had never forgotten it.But once I read the accident report, her story fell apart. Nika's heroic rescue had been nothing but an act.She had found the child beforehand and deliberately timed everything to stage the rescue. She walked away with only a few scrapes, then bribed a doctor and spent two full weeks pretending to recover in the hospital.Through her tears, she had told Alistair, "If it hadn't been for you, I might have died."From then on, Alistair became obsessed with protecting her.If she said she was sick, he stayed with her all night. If she needed money, he sent it wit

I'd always assumed Augustine was just being kind to me. Then one day, I learned there was more to it.I found a file about me in his office. My name was printed on the cover, along with the words "Caldwell family."My chest tightened. I reached for the file, but Augustine closed it before I could grab it.I looked up at him. He didn't try to explain. He simply asked, "What do you want to know?"I studied him for a few seconds, then gave him a deliberate smile. "I lied to you.""I know." His expression didn't change, as though he'd known all along. "The first time we were formally introduced, I knew you weren't an ordinary woman."My heart raced. "And you still approached me?""Because you've never lied to me." He took a seat.I frowned. "I've been hiding my identity all this time.""Hiding your identity isn't the same as lying to me." He said it so casually that I didn't know how to respond.Augustine slid the file toward me. His voice softened. "I haven't investigated your private lif

By the third day after our breakup, Alistair was already regretting it.Or rather, his company regretted it before he did.The financial scandal was still making headlines when he started calling me nonstop. At first, I ignored him. After the fifth unanswered call, he sent me two messages. The first said, "Elena, we need to talk." The second read, "I was under too much pressure. That's why I said those things."As if pressure somehow excused throwing me out, shoving me aside for Nika, and leaving me bleeding on the floor.Still, I finally answered his call."Elena." As expected, his voice was much gentler now. "I haven't treated you well lately. But you know Nika isn't well. I couldn't just abandon her."For a moment, I almost fell for it again. Alistair had always been good at making me question myself. Somehow, he could twist every problem until it became my fault for not being understanding enough. Then his voice softened even more. "Come back."I said nothing. He took my silence fo

I slammed into the doorframe.Pain exploded across my forehead, and warm blood trickled down my cheek.Still, I reached out my hand. "Give it back."Nika took off the necklace and held it out to me, her eyes red. "If you want it so badly, take it back."Then she suddenly hurled it across the room.I was still dazed and reacted too late. The necklace flew past me and hit the living room floor. The glass bead shattered, sending the two tiny spheres rolling toward the couch.I gasped and crawled toward the couch until I found both spheres.Behind me, Alistair helped Nika to her feet. She immediately wrapped her arms around his neck while I sat bleeding on the floor.Without even looking back, Alistair said, "It was only a necklace. Was it worth making such a scene?"I stared at him. "My grandmother left it to me."His voice hardened with impatience. "She didn't know, and she apologized. Nika liked it. Why couldn't you just let her have it?"Nika sniffled softly. "I really didn't mean to d
