Chapter 1

Alistair was the first to come out of the bedroom the next morning. His shirt was only half-buttoned, and a faint red scratch marked his collarbone.

He rubbed his aching arm. I pretended not to notice. Instead, I spread peanut butter on a slice of toast just the way he liked it and handed it to him. "Good morning. Why are you up so early?"

He ignored the toast and stared at me. "Nika is still asleep. Keep your voice down. Whatever you do, don't wake her."

I nodded. "She's a guest. I should be considerate."

Satisfied, he ruffled my hair. "That's the Elena I know."

Then, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, he added, "Nika doesn't like being around strangers. Pack your things today and move out for a while."

I was the one paying the rent.

Still, I only said, "All right."

He smiled, pleased with my answer. Just then, the bedroom door cracked open.

An hour later, Alistair left with Nika. He said she needed someone with her at all times, so naturally, he had to take her to work.

Once they were gone, I pulled out the invitation I had hidden beneath a couch cushion the night before and headed to the launch.

I had dressed so plainly that the attendant checking invitations looked me over twice.

I stayed at the back of the crowd, where I had a clear view of Alistair onstage.

Nika was practically pressed against his chest. His hand rested on her waist, his thumb stroking her skin with easy familiarity.

He used to do the same thing to calm me down.

Today's launch was supposed to announce a major partnership for the project he was leading.

Amid the applause, he adjusted his suit and stepped into the spotlight.

The host repeatedly called for the partner's representative, but no one appeared.

Uneasy whispers spread through the room. Alistair's face slowly darkened, and his unease soon turned to panic.

Nika patted his back gently. "Maybe something came up and delayed them. Let's wait a little longer."

A moment later, his assistant pushed through the crowd. "Mr. Westwood, we have a problem. The media group just backed out, so the partnership is on hold."

"Why?" Alistair snapped.

"They say they need to review the company's reputation."

His family owned the company, which had dominated the industry for years. Something like this should never have happened.

Furious, Alistair hurled the microphone to the floor.

The speakers shrieked with feedback, and everyone covered their ears.

From my spot in the corner, I took a glass of wine from a passing server's tray.

Alistair hurried off with Nika toward the green room. I did not follow. I'd already seen enough.

I didn't notice the man until he appeared beside me. "Here alone?"

I nodded. "For now."

He pulled out an empty chair. "Then perhaps you'll keep me company for a while."

After a moment's hesitation, I sat down.

By the next day, Alistair had lost everything.Westwood Group's share price had crashed, its funding had dried up, and operations had ground to a halt. Several of Alistair's most trusted executives had resigned as well.He sent me a single message. "Meet me."I ignored it.Half an hour later, he showed up in person. The arrogant man I'd once known now stood before me in wrinkled clothes, his eyes bloodshot."Elena." He took a step toward me. "I know I was wrong."Then, to my surprise, he dropped to his knees. "Please."I stared at him. This was the same man who had thrown me out of my own home for Nika. Now he knelt before me, broken and begging."I never thought you'd truly leave me." Alistair's voice was hoarse. "I knew you loved me. I knew that whatever I did, you'd always come back in the end. That was why I..."I finished his sentence. "That was why you thought you could keep hurting me."He was silent for a long moment. "I got too used to having you beside me. Elena, I finally un

I wiped away my tears and called my assistant. "Find out where my father was last seen. Check all security footage and call records. Don't miss anything."Within minutes, Caldwell News Group's entire network was searching for him.We checked transportation records, hotels, hospitals, and private security firms. Wherever my father had been, he must have left a trail.Beside me, Augustine made a call. "Check every vehicle entering or leaving the port. Focus on private warehouses. Once you narrow the area, pull all nearby surveillance footage."When he hung up, I looked at him. "Your people?"He hummed, not bothering to deny it.I frowned. "Who exactly are you?""Augustine."I glared at him. "Seriously? Now isn't the time for jokes."A faint smile crossed his face. "Investment, finance, security, logistics, and a few ventures that don't belong in a corporate annual report."That told me everything I needed to know. The billionaire I'd met was only one part of who Augustine really was.His

I had my assistant look into everything Nika had done over the past six months.I was only trying to identify her mysterious investor. Instead, I found something far more interesting.Nika and Alistair had known each other since well before he met me.It all started with a traffic accident Alistair happened to witness.Nika claimed she had run into the road to save a child and gotten hit by a car. Alistair had never forgotten it.But once I read the accident report, her story fell apart. Nika's heroic rescue had been nothing but an act.She had found the child beforehand and deliberately timed everything to stage the rescue. She walked away with only a few scrapes, then bribed a doctor and spent two full weeks pretending to recover in the hospital.Through her tears, she had told Alistair, "If it hadn't been for you, I might have died."From then on, Alistair became obsessed with protecting her.If she said she was sick, he stayed with her all night. If she needed money, he sent it wit

I'd always assumed Augustine was just being kind to me. Then one day, I learned there was more to it.I found a file about me in his office. My name was printed on the cover, along with the words "Caldwell family."My chest tightened. I reached for the file, but Augustine closed it before I could grab it.I looked up at him. He didn't try to explain. He simply asked, "What do you want to know?"I studied him for a few seconds, then gave him a deliberate smile. "I lied to you.""I know." His expression didn't change, as though he'd known all along. "The first time we were formally introduced, I knew you weren't an ordinary woman."My heart raced. "And you still approached me?""Because you've never lied to me." He took a seat.I frowned. "I've been hiding my identity all this time.""Hiding your identity isn't the same as lying to me." He said it so casually that I didn't know how to respond.Augustine slid the file toward me. His voice softened. "I haven't investigated your private lif

By the third day after our breakup, Alistair was already regretting it.Or rather, his company regretted it before he did.The financial scandal was still making headlines when he started calling me nonstop. At first, I ignored him. After the fifth unanswered call, he sent me two messages. The first said, "Elena, we need to talk." The second read, "I was under too much pressure. That's why I said those things."As if pressure somehow excused throwing me out, shoving me aside for Nika, and leaving me bleeding on the floor.Still, I finally answered his call."Elena." As expected, his voice was much gentler now. "I haven't treated you well lately. But you know Nika isn't well. I couldn't just abandon her."For a moment, I almost fell for it again. Alistair had always been good at making me question myself. Somehow, he could twist every problem until it became my fault for not being understanding enough. Then his voice softened even more. "Come back."I said nothing. He took my silence fo

I slammed into the doorframe.Pain exploded across my forehead, and warm blood trickled down my cheek.Still, I reached out my hand. "Give it back."Nika took off the necklace and held it out to me, her eyes red. "If you want it so badly, take it back."Then she suddenly hurled it across the room.I was still dazed and reacted too late. The necklace flew past me and hit the living room floor. The glass bead shattered, sending the two tiny spheres rolling toward the couch.I gasped and crawled toward the couch until I found both spheres.Behind me, Alistair helped Nika to her feet. She immediately wrapped her arms around his neck while I sat bleeding on the floor.Without even looking back, Alistair said, "It was only a necklace. Was it worth making such a scene?"I stared at him. "My grandmother left it to me."His voice hardened with impatience. "She didn't know, and she apologized. Nika liked it. Why couldn't you just let her have it?"Nika sniffled softly. "I really didn't mean to d
