Marcus, the man in the dark suit, had my crossbow trained on my chest. He was maybe fifty yards away from me. That was too far for me to accurately fire my crossbow, but within range for him to take a clean shot at me.
" Don't move, Sarah. He has the high ground and a perfect shot." Adrian said from the doorway behind me.
"I know."
What were the odds they found me that fast? I mean, Adrian warned me they were ruthless, but this was faster than I expected. I turned around to see Adrian's pale face.
" Do you have it?"
I shook my head.
" I destroyed it. I didn't want them to find me."
" He doesn't have it." I shouted to the man in the trees.
Marcus smiled. His white teeth gleamed in the morning light.
" Adrian Vance downloaded classified files from our facility before he terminated it, is that right?
" I don't have any data drive,"Don't play dumb,"
Marcus said, his voice hardening. "Adrian Vance downloaded classified files from our facility before he burned it down. We know he came to you. Give us the drive, or we'll burn this farmhouse, along with all of its inhabitants, to the ground."
" Do you have it?"I mouthed to Adrian
He shook his head.
" I destroyed it. I didn't want them to find me."
" He doesn't have it," I shouted.
Marcus sighed, as if he were a disappointed parent. "I suppose we'll have to go inside and look around."
Marcus shifted his aim to my head
" You have five seconds. One."
I had to think fast.
" Trent!"
Trent was standing in the doorway, still holding the bucket of cleaning solution. He looked at me, stunned.
" Get down!"
I rolled to the left, behind the thick stone wall of the well. The rifle shot rang out and the dirt where I had been barely missed.
" Adrian, fire at will!"
Adrian stepped out from behind the doorframe and fired three rounds, each one finding a tree in the forest. Marcus took cover behind a large tree and fell silent. I stood up and sprinted to the house, Trent staring wide-eyed as I past him.
" Trent!"
I shoved him, sending him sprawling in the kitchen. I dove in after him and threw the steel door against another round of rifle fire.
" Get away from the windows."
Martha had her children in the root cellar. Chloe was clinging to Ben, sobbing. Adrian had taken up a position by the front window, his pistol in hand. " Who's that man?" Trent asked, still trembling.
" Someone who wants us dead,"
I said, picking up my crossbow. I peered out the crack in the boards. Marcus had moved out from behind the tree and was motioning to someone in the forest. A moment later, three figures emerged from the trees, rifles in hand.
We were outnumbered and outgunned, with a sniper on our side.
"We could hold them off," Adrian said, "but we need to think of an escape plan. They have the advantage of numbers and a sniper. We'd need an escape route."
" I have one,"
I said.
I ran to the back of the house and opened the heavy wooden door that led to the root cellar. It wasn't much, but it would keep us safe from rifle fire. The others piled in after me. I pulled the steel door shut and slid a large bolt across the top.
The children were quiet in the dim light of the cellar. Martha hugged her toddler to her chest. Chloe was curled in a ball, still mourning Ben. Adrian was crouched behind the door, his rifle resting on his shoulder.
"This won't hold,"
Adrian said. "They'll probably try to break the door down.
" They can't get in," I said.
I had bought a small generator and several cans of gasoline on my way here. I didn't have much use for them, but I knew what I was going to use them for. " Trent, give me a hand."
I reached into my stockpile space and pulled out two cans of gasoline and a small box of matches.
" What are you doing?" Trent asked
" Something they'll remember." I said.
I crawled to the small porthole at the end of the cellar. I poked the can of gasoline through the opening and let the liquid drip onto the grass. I pulled out a match and lit it.
" Whoa."
Trent backed away. A gust of wind extinguished the flame, but the next match quickly replaced it. The grass at the edge of our cellar was on fire, and the sound of a man cursing could be heard above our heads.
" That should hold them up for a few minutes," I said.
" You are so scary," Adrian said. "Thank you,"
We heard a thumping sound against the door.
" Get behind the shelves!"I yelled.
The shelves, where our stockpile of supplies was, would provide plenty of cover behind which we could crouch and fight if they breached the door. Adrian raised his pistol, and Martha grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter. Even Trent found a hammer from the workbenches.
The doors groaned as the men pushed against it, forcing it open.
" Hold the line!"
I took up a battle position and raised my crossbow.
The door flew open and a man in a dark suit stumbled inside. I fired, hitting him in the chest.
We left the farmhouse as dawn was breaking. The fire had spread to the east fence but not touching the stone walls that protected the house. It didn't matter. The farmhouse had already suffered an attack and from now it was compromised. Plus, the Syndicate knew where it was and an airborne virus was spreading throughout the valley.I heard myself saying, "Everyone grab a bag, we are going to the mountains. It will be a while before we reach new land, so we only take necessities, nothing else", while standing by the jeep.Martha got to work quickly, tossing in baby formula and diapers and a couple of packs of flour. Chloe only stuffed a small plastic pouch containing a picture of Ben and her. Trent, however, went searching in his room and came up with a duffel bag full of clothes and a bottle of whiskey that had been hidden at the back of his closet."No!" I snapped, grabbing the whiskey from his hands and throwing it on the dirt, "Alcohol dehydrates you, we need the water".His face r
The black-suited man stumbled into the room, rifle raised.I fired. The bolt to my crossbow found it's mark in his throat, and he crumpled, dropping his rifle with a gurgled curse."Two more!" Adrian yelled.Another soldier from the syndicate came barreling into the room, shooting wildly. He fired off a round that barely missed Martha's head, ricocheting off the stone wall to the left of the entrance.Adrian fired two rounds, and the soldier staggered back, falling against the doorframe."Trent, the door!" I yelled.Trent stood, frozen, his hammer still in his hands. He stared at the corpses on the ground as though mesmerized."Trent!" I screamed. His eyes locked with mine. For a brief moment, I saw the arrogant jackass I had known walk the halls of my old high school, a smug grin plastered across his face. But that look was gone, replaced with something else.Something deeper.Trent looked like a cornered animal."I think I saw the future," he said, almost to himself, before dropping

The survivors walked into the farmhouse like ghost. The lady holding the little boy introduced herself as Martha, and the other two were a young couple named Ben and Chloe. They gazed out with wide, terrified eyes at the fortified windows I had in my house and at the piles of medical supplies. However, Trent walked in as one of the owners. He removed his muddy shoes, tracked dirt all over my immacate floorboards and began to look at the pantry.“So,” Trent said with a smirk on his face, leaning against my kitchen counter. "Where's the food? I'm starving. And maybe a beer to wash it down?"I replied, "You get water", sternly. “If you don’t get it, it's because you haven't earned it”.Trent laughed, looking at Adrian. "You hearing this? Look, Sarah, I'm not your employee, I'm a survivor, we all need to share what we have equally.""Equally?" I came toward him, my hand on the hunting knife at my hip. "Did you hunt the zombies that were trying to break down this door last night? Are these
The power had gone out at exactly midnight. We went from the glow of a warm yellow farmhouse in to the deep night all in the blink of an eye.All I could hear was the howling winds outside and the frantic beating of my own heart."Generator."I said as I stood in the pitch black room.Adrian knew what he was talking about when it came to generators with his experience in the military.Minutes later we had the power back up with a soft glow to this side of the farmhouse. But we were not safe.Outside the deep silence of the night was deafening.I picked up my crossbow and stood by the window overlooking the valley below.Just beyond the lights the distant blinking lights of a city slowly turned off one by one.I looked at the clock."How long will we have?""The first infected will be on foot in an hour.First hours are always the worst.People tend to panic easier at first. They're in a state of confusion"I nodded as I loaded my crossbow,"We make sure they don't make it this far"Th
The figure came into view in the headlights, standing on the porch. It was Jason. He held his hands up and his smug face. Two dark-clad men with baseball bats stood behind him. The very men of the cabin. Men I humiliated; the same men.“Sarah,” Jason said in a polished sweet voice. "Long time no see."I shut the car engine and took my crossbow from the passenger seat. Adrian pulled out his gun.I said softly, "Stay behind me.He scoffled, "I'll not do it on your account, like hell.We got out of the jeep with weapons held up. Jason's smile never faltered.Plz, put the toys down, sweetheart," he said. I don't come here to fight, I don't come here to fight.“You followed me,” I said icily. Well, that's not talking, is it?Jason shrugged. I hired a private investigator, it cost me a lot of money, but you're worth it, you took something that belongs to me.I said, 'I took what was mine. “Half of that money was my own; the divorce was legal, you signed the papers.”Jason snapped, his compo
