Chapter 18 — THE SEVENTH DOOR

Darkness.

Not the kind that just hides things. The kind that swallows them whole.

Lena couldn't see anything. Not Ethan. Not Sarah. Not Adrian.

But Ethan's hand was still in hers. Sweaty. Shaking. Real. She held on tighter.

Something moved under their feet.

Not footsteps.

Heavier.

Bigger.

The whole floor shivered.

"Don't move," Ethan breathed into her ear. So close she could feel his fear.

Lena tried to breathe. She couldn't. Her chest was too tight.

And then she heard it.

"Lena..."

Her own name. In her own voice.

But she hadn't said anything.

Her mouth was dry. "Did you hear that?"

No one answered.

A weak emergency light buzzed and flickered above them. For half a second, Lena saw the staircase — concrete, wet, endless. Then it was gone again.

Adrian's voice came from the dark. "The lower system is open."

"We have to seal it," Sarah whispered, panicking now.

Adrian laughed. Not because it was funny. "There's nothing left to seal, Sarah."

_Crash._

Metal hitting metal from somewhere deep below. Lena jumped. Ethan pulled her against his chest. She could feel his heart hammering against her back.

"We're going back," he said.

He turned.

The steel door they came through was gone. Just a flat, cold wall where a door should be.

Ethan stared. "That wasn't there before."

Sarah touched the wall. Her fingers trembled. "It changed. The structure changed."

Adrian looked into the black. "Aurora didn't build this place."

Lena's voice was small. "Then who did?"

No one answered.

Then — a soft blue light. A thin strip along the edge of the stairs. One step lit up. Then the next. Then the next. Going down. Down so far Lena couldn't see the end.

On the walls, seven symbols glowed. Carved deep into stone.

The first one — a circle split by a line. Her palm burned, sharp and hot.

The second — a triangle. The burn got worse.

Third — a spiral. Her vision swam. Her knees almost gave out.

"Ethan?" she whispered.

"I've got you," he said, catching her.

Fourth — an eye.

Fifth — a broken crown.

Sixth — two hands reaching for each other.

And the seventh —

Lena stopped breathing.

It was hers. The silver mark on her palm. The one she was born with. The one that appeared after she died.

Sarah made a small, broken sound. "No. No, no, no."

"What?" Ethan snapped.

Sarah couldn't look at Lena. "That symbol wasn't here. I saw the photos from when Aurora found this place. That seventh door was empty."

Adrian turned, sharp. "When did it appear?"

Sarah finally looked up, tears in her eyes. "After you died, Lena. After the first apocalypse."

Silence. So heavy Lena could hear her own blood in her ears.

"You were connected to this before," Ethan said quietly. "Before you were reborn."

"No," Lena shook her head, but her hand was burning so bad she wanted to scream. "I wasn't. I wasn't here."

The stairs shook. The seven symbols flared bright.

A voice echoed everywhere and nowhere.

"Seven subjects."

Lena froze.

"Six failed."

A pause that lasted forever.

"One returned."

Ethan stepped in front of her, raising his gun at the dark. "Show yourself!"

The voice laughed, soft. A woman's voice?

"I already did."

The seventh door — massive, black — cracked open. Just an inch. A pale, cold light bled out.

Something inside was breathing.

Slow. Deep. Like it had been sleeping for a hundred years and just woke up.

Sarah grabbed Adrian's arm. "We need to leave. Right now."

Lena couldn't move. She couldn't look away from that light.

"Who's behind that door?" she asked.

Adrian's face was white. "The answer to everything."

The door opened another inch. Cold wind hit them, smelling like dust and old blood.

And then Lena heard it.

_Thump. Thump. Thump._

A heartbeat. Her heartbeat.

She pressed a hand to her chest. The rhythm matched.

"Ethan?"

"That's you, Lena. You're scared."

"No," she whispered, eyes fixed on the door. "That's not mine."

The room exploded with light — not real light. Memories.

The Brooklyn Bridge collapsing. People screaming. The sky red as fire.

And her — in the middle of it. Not scared. Holding a black sphere that pulsed like a heart. Behind her, seven people in white.

Then — this chamber. The seventh door. A man. He was holding her shoulders.

"You don't have to remember," he said.

Her own voice, younger, broken: "I will. I promise I will."

The vision ripped away. Lena stumbled into Ethan.

"What did you see?" He held her face.

"I've been here before," she gasped. "Before the apocalypse. Before I died."

Adrian's eyes went wide. "You mean—"

"I wasn't reborn by accident," Lena whispered, staring at the door. "I was sent back."

The door SLAMMED open.

Everyone screamed.

A figure stood inside. Tall. Still. A dark hood hiding its face.

"Don't come any closer!" Ethan shouted.

The figure lifted one pale hand. Slowly. And pointed straight at Lena.

"Welcome home."

Lena's blood turned to ice.

"Who are you?" Ethan demanded.

The figure tilted its head. "You still don't remember him?"

Lena frowned. "Him?"

The hood slipped. Just enough.

A scar. A thin white scar across the cheekbone.

Lena knew that scar. She had dreamed about it. She had seen it right before she died on the bridge.

Her legs gave out.

"No..."

"Lena, who is that?" Ethan caught her.

The man smiled. She remembered that smile.

"You promised me you'd come back."

The memories hit her all at once — a lab, a countdown, the black sphere in her hands, the bridge, and him standing next to her, saying "I love you."

She finally said his name. The name she had forgotten for two lifetimes.

"Daniel..."

Adrian went completely still. Sarah covered her mouth.

Daniel's smile faded.

"I was her first love," he said, looking at Ethan. Then his eyes found Lena's. Cold now.

"I was also the first person she killed."

The lights went out.

And deep beneath Brooklyn, something finally woke up.

No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 28 — THE SEVEN VERSIONS

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
