Chapter 21 — THE FIRST COLLAPSE

last update publish date: 2026-10-05 21:41:41

The countdown reached zero.

*00:00:00*

Nothing happened.

For one impossible, stupid second, Lena felt a rush of relief so strong her knees almost buckled. They had made it. It was over. A glitch, a false alarm—

Then the entire chamber moved.

Not shook. Not trembled.

Moved.

The floor lurched sideways under their feet. The walls groaned, a deep, grinding sound of stone and metal waking up after a hundred years of sleep, like something enormous had just rolled over beneath them.

Ethan grabbed Lena and pulled her hard against his chest.

"RUN!"

They spun toward the staircase - the only way they had come in.

The stairs were gone.

Where there had been concrete steps leading up to the surface, there was now a solid, seamless wall of black stone. No seam. No door. As if it had always been there.

Sarah stared at it, her mouth open. "We're trapped. We're trapped we're trapped—"

Adrian shoved past her and slammed his hands onto the control panel, his fingers flying.

"There's another exit!" he shouted over the groaning.

"Where?!" Ethan demanded, still holding Lena.

"Below us!" Adrian's eyes were frantic as he scanned the readings. "The original facility - it goes deeper. Much deeper. It's the only way!"

Ethan looked down at the floor that was still vibrating. "Below us?"

Adrian nodded, sweating. "The first lab. Where it all started."

Daniel hadn't moved.

He was still standing beside the seventh door, staring into the pure darkness beyond it, completely still. Like he was listening to something only he could hear.

Lena noticed it first - the change in his shoulders.

"Daniel."

He didn't respond.

"Daniel!"

He slowly turned his head. And Lena's breath caught.

The cold, empty, mechanical expression was gone.

For the first time since he stepped through that door, she saw _him_. The real him. The boy from her memories. The boy who used to hold her hand under the desk during exams so she wouldn't be nervous. The boy who had promised her, with tears in his eyes, "I won't let them erase you."

"Lena," he whispered. His voice was his own again. Young. Broken.

She stepped toward him without thinking.

Ethan caught her wrist instantly. "Don't."

Daniel looked at Ethan. No anger. Just... sadness.

"You're right to be afraid of me," he said to Ethan quietly.

Ethan tightened his grip on Lena. "Who are you? What are you?"

Daniel looked back at Lena, and his eyes were full of so much pain it hurt to see.

"I don't know anymore."

The chamber flashed.

Pure, searing white light - not like a bulb, like the sun exploding inside the room.

Everyone screamed and covered their eyes.

When Lena opened hers, she wasn't in the chamber anymore.

She was on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Smoke filled the sky, thick and acrid. Abandoned cars were scattered everywhere, doors open. People were running, screaming, in every direction.

But something was wrong.

There was no destruction. No ruined buildings. No craters. No military tanks. The city looked... normal. Almost untouched.

Then Lena looked up at a massive digital billboard that was flickering over the bridge.

*APRIL 17, 2024.*

Her blood ran cold.

She looked down at her hands. They were covered in fine gray dust, shaking.

A voice whispered behind her, hoarse.

"Lena."

She turned.

Ethan was standing a few feet away.

But he looked older. Ten years older. His face was gaunt, exhausted, covered in stubble. His clothes were torn and filthy, as if he'd been living on the streets for weeks.

"What happened?" she asked, her voice small.

He looked at her, and tears filled his eyes.

"You don't remember?"

"Remember what?"

He walked closer, his steps heavy.

"We failed."

Lena's heart sank to her stomach. "Failed at what?"

Ethan pointed behind her, over the railing.

She turned.

The Brooklyn Bridge was covered in people.

Thousands of them. Men, women, children. All standing completely, unnaturally still. Shoulder to shoulder. Not moving. Not blinking.

Then, as one, every single person lifted their head at the exact same time.

Their eyes turned silver.

Lena stumbled backward with a choked cry.

Ethan grabbed her, pulling her away. "Don't look at them! Don't look!"

"What are they?!" she cried.

"I don't know anymore!"

A deep, low sound rolled across the city, like a foghorn from hell.

Then the people began to move. Not toward Lena and Ethan.

Away. Running. Fleeing from something approaching behind the skyline.

Lena looked up.

A black cloud was spreading between the skyscrapers. It wasn't smoke. It moved against the wind, thick and alive, pulsing.

And wherever it passed, every single light went out. Buildings went dark. Streetlights died.

"Ethan..." she whispered.

"I know."

The vision ripped.

She was inside a laboratory again. Harsh white lights. The smell of cold metal.

Daniel stood beside her, alive, breathing hard.

The black sphere sat on a table in the middle, pulsing slowly.

Seven people in white coats surrounded it.

And behind the thick glass, her mother stood.

Dr. Evelyn Carter. Her mother. Alive. Looking terrified, her hands pressed against the glass.

"Lena," Evelyn said, her voice shaking through the intercom, "if you activate Project Zero, you may save yourself. You may save your consciousness. But—"

Lena stared at the sphere. "And everyone else? What happens to everyone else?"

Evelyn didn't answer. She couldn't.

Daniel stepped forward. "We can still shut it down, Lena. We can walk away right now."

One of the scientists shook his head, pale. "It's already awake. It's listening."

The sphere pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then Lena heard a voice. Her own voice, but colder. Older. So certain.

"Begin the transfer."

She turned toward Daniel in shock.

"No."

Daniel looked confused, hurt. "You said we had to stop it. Lena, what are you doing?"

She stared at him, and her expression changed. Hardened.

"I changed my mind."

Daniel grabbed her hand. "Lena, what are you doing?"

She pulled away from him, her hand leaving his.

"I know what happens next," she said quietly. "I've seen it. And this is the only way."

The vision shattered like broken glass.

Lena screamed as she slammed back onto the cold floor of the chamber.

Ethan dropped to his knees beside her, grabbing her shoulders. "LENA! Lena, look at me!"

She looked up, gasping for air. Daniel was standing over them both, his face devastated.

"You remember now," he whispered.

Lena shook her head, tears spilling. "Not everything. God, not everything—"

"Enough," Daniel said.

She looked at him, her chest heaving. "Why did I activate it? Why? Why would I do that?"

Daniel's voice broke.

"Because you thought death was the only way to save humanity."

Lena stared, uncomprehending. "What?"

"You discovered that consciousness could survive the body," he said softly. "That we could copy a mind, store it, send it forward."

He looked toward the open seventh door, at the endless black.

"You believed... you believed you could send human memories into the future. That you could rebuild civilization after the collapse. You thought you were saving us."

Adrian stepped forward, his face twisted. "That wasn't the plan. Evelyn's plan was preservation, not—"

Daniel turned on him, sudden fury in his eyes.

"It became the plan when you changed the protocol!"

"You changed nothing," Adrian snapped.

"You did!" Daniel shouted, and the whole chamber shook with his voice.

Sarah stepped between them, terrified. "What actually happened? Someone just tell me what actually happened!"

Daniel took a shaky breath.

"Evelyn tried to stop the project."

Lena's heart tightened painfully. "My mother?"

"She discovered the truth," Daniel said, looking at Lena with infinite sadness. "The system wasn't preserving consciousness, Lena. It was never preserving."

He looked at her, and said the words that froze the blood in her veins.

"It was copying it."

Silence. Absolute silence.

Ethan's face changed. He understood first.

"Copies?" he whispered. "You mean... clones?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Every time someone entered Project Zero, the system created another version. Another copy. And stored the original. Again and again and again."

Lena stared at her own hands, at the silver mark. Her stomach turned inside out.

"How many versions of me exist?" she whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

The chamber suddenly filled with harsh static. The speakers crackled violently.

Then a woman's voice spoke - calm, clear, familiar.

"Seven."

Lena froze. That voice.

Her mother's voice.

"Seven versions of Lena Carter."

Sarah whispered, her hand over her mouth. "Evelyn? Is that... Evelyn?"

The voice continued, as if it had been waiting a hundred years to speak.

"Six failed. They degraded. They broke. They remembered too much or too little."

Lena's heart was pounding so loud she thought it would burst.

"And the seventh?" she whispered.

Silence.

Then, softly:

"The seventh is standing in the chamber right now."

Lena slowly, slowly looked at Ethan.

He was looking back at her, his face pale.

And then she saw it.

A tiny silver line had appeared across his wrist. Thin, like a vein of light.

Then another. Then another, branching up his arm.

The same symbol as hers. The three lines and the circle.

But this time it wasn't glowing.

It was spreading. Growing.

Ethan stared at it, his eyes wide with horror.

"Lena..." he breathed.

She grabbed his hand without thinking.

The moment her skin touched his mark, another vision slammed into her, brutal and fast—

Ethan standing in a laboratory, younger, in a white coat, his face desperate.

Ethan speaking to someone off-camera, his voice breaking: "I'll do whatever it takes to bring her back. I don't care what it costs."

Another flash—

Ethan beside Daniel. Both of them wearing white lab coats. Both staring down at a younger Lena lying on a table, unconscious, wires everywhere.

And finally—

Ethan's hand hovering over a large red button. His face streaming with tears. And his voice whispering: "Forgive me."

Then he pressed it.

The world went dark.

Lena yanked her hand away from Ethan like she'd been burned, scrambling backward.

Ethan stared at her, confused and hurt. "What? What did you see?"

She couldn't speak. She couldn't breathe.

Because she finally understood something far worse than the apocalypse.

Something worse than being a copy.

Ethan wasn't merely the secondary subject. He wasn't just the boy who loved her in this life.

He had been there from the beginning.

In the first lab. On the first day.

And he had helped bring her back.

He had helped create her.

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
