Chapter 22 — THE SECOND SUBJECT

Lena couldn't look at Ethan.

She tried. She really tried. But every time her eyes found his face, the vision slammed back into her head like a hammer.

Ethan in a white lab coat, not a suit. Clean-shaven. Younger.

Daniel beside him, arguing.

A younger Lena lying behind glass, unconscious, wires in her arms, a mask over her face.

And Ethan's hand - his hand - hovering over a red button, shaking.

Then pressing it.

Then darkness.

"Lena."

She flinched and stepped backward, putting space between them. The chamber was suddenly too small, too cold.

Ethan didn't follow her. He just stood there, his hands at his sides, his face tight with confusion and hurt.

"Tell me what you saw," he said quietly. "Please."

"You."

His face tightened. "What about me? What did I do?"

"You were there." Her voice was barely there. "In the laboratory. From the beginning."

Silence fell, heavy and suffocating.

Adrian suddenly looked away, down at the floor. Too quickly.

Lena noticed. In the middle of all this, she noticed.

"You knew." She turned on him. "You knew, didn't you?"

Adrian didn't answer. He kept staring at the floor.

"You knew Ethan was involved," she said, louder now, her voice shaking with anger and betrayal. "All this time, you knew."

"I suspected," he said finally, without looking up.

"No." Her voice hardened to steel. "Don't lie to me anymore, Adrian. You _knew_."

Ethan looked at Adrian, his own eyes narrowing. "Did you know?"

A long pause.

Then Adrian finally nodded. One small, miserable nod.

"Yes."

Ethan's expression changed - hurt flashing into anger. "Then why didn't you tell me? Why would you let me walk around not knowing who I am?"

"Because your memories were incomplete," Adrian said quietly. "Yours and Lena's. If I had told you too early, the system—"

"That's not an excuse," Ethan cut him off, his voice sharp.

"No," Adrian said, finally meeting his eyes. "It isn't. And I'm sorry."

Sarah stepped between them, her hands up. "Okay, everyone needs to calm down. We are literally trapped a hundred feet underground with a possibly evil clone of Daniel, now is not the time for—"

Lena shook her head violently. "No. No, I need answers. Right now."

She looked directly at Ethan, her eyes burning with tears she refused to let fall.

"Did you know me before 2023? Before the rebirth? Before all of this?"

Ethan stared at her. For three long seconds he said nothing.

And his silence answered before his words ever could.

"Yes."

Lena's heart sank straight through the floor. It was like someone had reached into her chest and squeezed.

"How long?" Her voice cracked.

"I don't know," he whispered.

"That's not good enough, Ethan!"

"I remember fragments!" He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated, tormented. "Flashes. Pieces that don't make sense."

"What fragments? Tell me!"

"The laboratory," he said. "The white lights. The cold."

Her breathing became shallow, fast.

"You and Daniel."

He nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "You were unconscious. On a table. There were so many wires—"

"And you pressed the button."

He closed his eyes, as if the memory physically hurt.

"Yes."

The ground seemed to disappear beneath Lena's feet. She had to grab the wall to stay standing.

"Why?" she whispered. "Why would you do that?"

"I don't remember why," he said, his voice raw. "I just remember... I remember wanting to save you. More than anything. I remember thinking if I didn't press it, I would lose you forever."

Daniel suddenly laughed from across the chamber.

It wasn't a happy laugh. It was cold and broken and bitter.

Everyone turned.

"That's what he told you last time, too."

Ethan looked at him sharply. "Last time? What last time?"

Daniel nodded slowly, his empty eyes on Ethan.

"You always forget, Ethan. Every version of you always forgets that part."

Lena stared at Daniel, her hand still on the wall for support. "Explain. Explain what he was."

Daniel walked closer, his steps silent on the stone floor.

"Ethan was never supposed to be Subject Two."

The words dropped like a stone.

"What was he supposed to be, then?" Lena asked.

"The observer."

Adrian's head snapped up. "Daniel. Don't—"

But Daniel continued, relentless.

"He was assigned to monitor the experiment. To watch you. To make sure you didn't die during the transfer."

Ethan looked completely lost. Confused like a child. "I was a researcher? I was... like you?"

"You were more than that," Daniel said.

He pointed at Lena. One finger.

"You were the primary subject. The key. The original."

Then he pointed at Ethan.

"And he was the person who refused to let you die. No matter the cost."

Lena looked at Ethan, her vision blurring.

"Why?" she whispered. "Why would you do that for me?"

Ethan's voice was barely audible. But in the silent chamber, everyone heard it.

"Because I loved you."

The words hung in the air. Heavy. Final. Real.

And Lena's memories shifted again.

Not a vision this time. A feeling.

A different Ethan. A different time. His hand in hers, warm, calloused. His voice in her ear, whispering, "I will find you again. In every life, I will find you again."

Then another memory - Ethan crying beside a machine that was flatlining. Pounding on the glass. Shouting, broken: "Bring her back! Bring her back, damn it!"

Lena covered her mouth, a sob escaping.

"You've been trying to bring me back," she whispered. "For years. Over and over."

"For years," Ethan echoed, tears now in his own eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she cried.

"Because I didn't know," he said helplessly. "I swear, Lena, I didn't know until just now."

She turned to Adrian, her whole body shaking. "Who erased our memories? Who did this to us?"

Adrian's face had gone bone-white.

"The system," he said. "The transfer degrades memory, it—"

Daniel shook his head sharply.

"Not entirely."

A metallic sound echoed behind them.

Click. Click-click.

Everyone spun around.

A hidden panel in the wall - one they had walked past a dozen times - slid open with a hiss.

Inside was a small black device, no bigger than a phone. Dusty, but blinking with a soft blue light.

Lena recognized it immediately. From her dreams.

"The drive," she breathed. "Evelyn's drive."

Adrian stared at it like it was a bomb. "No. No, that was destroyed. We destroyed it in the first collapse."

Sarah stepped forward and picked it up before anyone could stop her. The moment she touched it, a screen projected into the air.

*MEMORY ARCHIVE — VERSION 7*

Lena stepped closer, her heart hammering. "Play it."

Sarah hesitated, looking at Adrian's terrified face.

Adrian shook his head violently. "Don't. Lena, please don't."

Lena looked at him, her eyes hard. "Play it."

Sarah pressed the screen.

Static filled the chamber, loud and screaming.

Then Lena appeared.

But not this Lena. Older. Maybe thirty-eight. Exhausted. Her hair was pulled back messily, her eyes red from crying, her lab coat stained. She looked directly into the lens, directly at them, through time itself.

"If you're watching this, the transfer worked," she said. Her voice was hoarse.

Lena froze. It was her. But not her.

Recording-Lena gave a sad, tired smile.

"But if you're watching this, then I failed."

Ethan stepped closer, his hand finding Lena's without thinking.

Recording-Lena continued, leaning closer to the camera, urgent.

"Ethan will forget. Daniel will remember. Mother will disappear."

Adrian closed his eyes, his shoulders collapsing.

"And Project Zero will wake."

Lena's hands began to tremble uncontrollably.

Recording-Lena looked over her shoulder, frightened, as if something was coming.

"The apocalypse isn't the end of the experiment," she whispered quickly.

She leaned so close her face filled the screen.

"It's the experiment."

The recording cut to black.

Nobody spoke. Nobody could.

Then another message typed itself across the projection:

*ARCHIVE CONTINUES — LOCATION: CROSS TOWER*

Ethan's head snapped up.

"My office," he breathed. "Cross Tower. That's my building."

Adrian nodded slowly, his face grim.

"There is something beneath Cross Tower. There always was."

Lena looked at him sharply. "What? What's beneath it?"

"A laboratory," Adrian said. "The original one."

"Still active?" Lena asked.

Adrian didn't answer.

Sarah answered for him, her voice small.

"Yes."

The building suddenly shook. Not the chamber - far above them. A deep, muffled BOOM, like an explosion.

Dust rained down from the ceiling.

Ethan grabbed Lena's arm. "We're leaving. Right now. Whatever is under my building, we're leaving this chamber first."

Daniel stepped toward the seventh door, blocking the way slightly.

"You can't."

Ethan stopped, his jaw tight. "Why the hell not?"

Daniel pointed straight at Lena. His finger was steady.

"Because the system has already recognized her."

The silver mark on Lena's palm suddenly flashed - not glowed, FLASHED, like a beacon.

A deep, mechanical voice came from beneath the floor, from the walls, from everywhere at once.

*"PRIMARY SUBJECT CONFIRMED."*

Then a second voice, overlapping.

*"SECONDARY SUBJECT CONFIRMED."*

Lena looked at Ethan, terrified.

The chamber doors opened.

Not one.

Not two.

All around them - seven hidden doors grinding open at once, revealing seven dark corridors, each leading into absolute, breathing darkness. The air coming from them was cold and stale, like tombs.

Sarah whispered, clutching her arms:

"Which one do we take?"

Daniel looked at Lena. And when he spoke, his voice was soft, almost kind.

"The seventh."

Lena stared at him, her palm burning.

"Why? Why the seventh?"

"Because that's where your first memory is waiting. The real one. The one you buried before you even became Lena."

Ethan took Lena's hand. This time, she didn't pull away. She held on tight, her fingers lacing through his.

Together, they stepped toward the seventh corridor.

Behind them, Adrian remained frozen. He hadn't moved at all.

Sarah noticed and turned back. "Adrian? Adrian, come on!"

He didn't move. His eyes were fixed on the archway above the seventh corridor.

Because carved into the stone above it, old and deep, were four words that made his blood run cold:

*WELCOME BACK, DR. CARTER.*

Adrian whispered, his voice barely audible, full of horror:

"She was never the subject."

Lena stopped at the threshold and looked back.

"What?"

Adrian looked at her - really looked at her - for the first time like he was seeing who she truly was.

"She was the creator."

The corridor lights came alive.

One after another after another, flickering on, leading deeper and deeper beneath Brooklyn, into darkness that had been waiting for her for a very, very long time.

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
