Chapter 20 — THE FACE BEHIND THE DOOR

last update publish date: 2026-10-05 21:34:46

It stepped forward.

Lena couldn't move.

It couldn't be him. It _was_ him.

Daniel's face. Daniel's dark eyes. Even the small white scar on his left eyebrow from when he fell off his bike at thirteen - she had kissed that scar a hundred times.

But something was terribly, horribly wrong.

His expression was empty. Not angry. Not sad. Just... blank. Like a mask that hadn't learned how to be human yet.

Ethan raised his weapon in one smooth motion, putting his body between Lena and the thing in the doorway.

"Stay back."

The figure stopped. Its head turned slowly, mechanically, toward Ethan.

Then to Lena.

"Still protecting her," it said.

The voice was Daniel's. The exact voice she heard in her dreams for three years. But it sounded wrong - distant, layered, like it was coming from the bottom of a well.

Lena's hands started to shake so hard she had to clench them.

"Daniel?" Her voice broke on his name.

The figure smiled. It was the worst thing she had ever seen because Daniel had never smiled like that.

"You remember my name."

"Who... who are you?" she whispered.

"That's the wrong question."

He lifted his hand - just lifted it - and the silver mark on Lena's palm exploded with white-hot pain.

She cried out, falling to her knees. It felt like her skin was burning from the inside.

Ethan grabbed her arm instantly.

The figure's eyes narrowed. The empty expression finally cracked.

"Don't touch her."

Ethan stood in front of Lena, his jaw tight, his gun never lowering. "You don't give me orders. Whatever you are."

The figure tilted its head, studying Ethan like he was an interesting insect.

"You still don't understand."

A low vibration hummed through the chamber. The stone walls, which had been blank for minutes, suddenly woke up.

Images flooded every surface.

Lena as a little girl with pigtails, on the swings.

Lena at fourteen, in her high school uniform, crying in the library.

Lena at twenty-two, walking into Cross Tower for her first interview.

Lena on the Brooklyn Bridge, hair blowing in the wind.

Lena lying on cold concrete, eyes open, dead.

Lena gasped.

Then the last image - Lena waking up in her tiny apartment, gasping, on May 12, 2023. The morning she thought she had been reborn.

She stared, her whole body cold.

"That wasn't a recording," she breathed. "That was... that was my life."

Daniel's face remained expressionless.

"No."

"You watched me."

"We watched every version of you."

The blood drained from Lena's face.

"Every version?" Her voice was barely audible.

The chamber changed. It wasn't one life anymore.

Another Lena. Short hair. Leather jacket. Standing in Tokyo.

Another Lena. Pregnant. Crying in a bunker in Germany.

Another Lena. In a lab coat. Older. Harder eyes.

Different clothes. Different years. Different cities.

But the same face.

The same silver mark burning on their hands.

Sarah made a small, choked sound. "How many times? How many times did you do this?"

Daniel looked at her without blinking.

"Six."

Lena couldn't breathe.

"Six?"

"Six attempts. Six versions. Six failures."

Adrian suddenly lunged toward the control panel, his hands flying over the keys.

Daniel's head snapped toward him.

"Don't."

One word. Adrian froze mid-step.

"You shouldn't be here," Daniel said to him, his voice suddenly sharp.

Adrian's voice shook. "I helped create this. I can still shut it down."

"No."

Daniel's expression hardened into something cruel.

"You didn't help create it, Adrian. You helped _open_ it."

The chamber went deathly silent.

Lena looked between them, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What is Project Zero? Someone just tell me what Project Zero actually is!"

Daniel answered immediately, his eyes never leaving hers.

"A memory."

Lena frowned through tears. "A memory? What does that mean?"

"A memory that learned how to survive."

It made no sense. And yet it made her skin crawl.

Then the main screen changed, the words typing themselves out in cold white letters.

*PROJECT ZERO — CONSCIOUSNESS PRESERVATION SYSTEM*

*STATUS: ACTIVE*

*PRIMARY MEMORY: L.C.*

*SECONDARY MEMORY: E.C.*

*ORIGINAL MEMORY: D-01*

Ethan stared, his knuckles white around his gun. "So Daniel is Project Zero?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Part of it."

Sarah stepped forward, terrified. "Then what's inside the seventh door? If you are Project Zero, what's in there?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked directly at Lena. And for a second, something human flickered in those dead eyes.

"You."

Lena shook her head violently, stepping back into Ethan. "No. No, I've never been inside that room. Never."

"You've been inside it more times than anyone, Lena."

And another memory hit her - not like a flash, like a truck.

She saw herself. But not twenty-five. Older. Thirty-five, maybe. Exhausted. Dark circles under her eyes. Wires taped to her arms, to her temples.

Daniel beside her, younger, alive, holding her hand so tight it hurt.

Adrian behind thick glass, shouting.

A woman in a white coat screaming: "START THE TRANSFER! WE'RE LOSING HER!"

Her own voice, raw and terrified: "If this fails, the world ends. Do you understand me? The world ends!"

Then Daniel, whispering to her: "We still have a choice. We can stop this."

The memory shattered like glass.

Lena collapsed against Ethan. He caught her, holding her up.

"I remember," she gasped. "Oh god, I remember."

Ethan steadied her, his hands on her shoulders. "What? What do you remember?"

"She knew," Lena choked out. "My first self... Eve... she knew."

"Who knew what?"

"The apocalypse." Lena looked up at Daniel, tears streaming down her face. "She knew the apocalypse was coming."

Daniel nodded, his empty face almost sad.

"And she tried to stop it."

"How?" Lena cried. "How did she try to stop it?"

"By creating the thing that eventually caused it."

Lena stared, uncomprehending. "That doesn't make sense. That doesn't make any sense!"

"It will."

Daniel turned toward the seventh door. His back was to them.

"The apocalypse wasn't an accident, Lena."

A terrible, suffocating silence fell.

Adrian closed his eyes like he was in pain.

Sarah looked horrified, her hand over her mouth.

Ethan's voice was barely a whisper. "Someone started it."

Daniel nodded without turning around.

"Yes."

"Who?" Ethan asked.

Daniel turned. And looked straight at Lena.

"You did."

Lena stepped backward as if he'd slapped her. "No."

"You opened the system."

"I would never—" Her voice broke. "I would never do that!"

"You already did."

The chamber shook violently. A huge crack ripped across the floor between them, spitting dust.

The lights flickered wildly.

Then the countdown appeared again, bigger, redder.

*PROJECT ZERO: 100%*

The screen changed.

*GLOBAL SYSTEM RELEASE: INITIATED*

"No!" Adrian screamed and lunged for the controls, typing frantically. His hands were shaking. "No no no—"

Nothing happened. The system was locked.

"It's locked," he whispered. "It's completely locked out."

Sarah grabbed him. "Can you stop it? Adrian, can you stop it?!"

He shook his head, looking utterly defeated. "No."

Ethan turned to Daniel, his eyes blazing. "Then you stop it yourself. You are it, right? So stop it!"

Daniel smiled sadly, and for a second, he looked like the old Daniel again.

"I can't."

"Why the hell not?!"

"Because I'm not the one controlling it anymore."

Everyone looked at Lena.

At the exact same second, her silver mark began to glow so bright it lit up the entire chamber. The three lines crossing a circle were pulsing.

Then another symbol burned itself underneath it.

A small, sharp number.

*07*

Lena stared at it, her palm burning.

"What does seven mean?" Her voice was shaking. "What does seven mean?!"

For the first time, Daniel's expression changed. Pure, raw fear crossed his face.

"It means you're awake."

A distant siren began wailing from deep beneath Brooklyn.

Then another. And another. Then hundreds, all at once.

Above them, across the entire city, every emergency system suddenly screamed to life.

Phones lit up on their own.

Traffic lights went berserk.

Power grids began shutting down, block by block.

And on the screen in the chamber, one final message appeared in stark white:

*APRIL 17, 2024 — 00:00*

Lena stared at the date. It was the date of the first collapse. The date the world ended in her past life.

"That isn't possible," she whispered. "That date already happened."

Daniel looked at her, his face full of sorrow.

"It was never a prediction, Lena."

The screen flashed, and began to count down.

*COUNTDOWN: 00:00:59*

Ethan's face hardened into steel. "Fifty-nine seconds until what?"

Daniel looked toward the ceiling, as if he could see through rock and concrete to the city above.

"The first collapse."

*00:00:45*

Sarah grabbed Adrian's arm so hard her nails dug in. "What happens at zero? Tell me what happens at zero!"

Adrian looked at Lena, his eyes full of tears.

"The world changes."

*00:00:30*

Lena looked at Ethan, panic choking her. "We have to get out. We have to get out right now!"

Daniel shook his head slowly.

"It's too late."

*00:00:20*

Lena's palm burned brighter, almost unbearable now.

Then she heard it. A voice.

Her own voice. But older. Exhausted. Terrified. Crackling through the speakers, a recording from another life.

"Don't let me open the door. Whatever you do, don't let me open the door!"

Lena looked at the seventh door. The heavy locks were turning on their own. Click. Click. Click.

*00:00:10*

Ethan grabbed Lena and pulled her toward the exit. "MOVE!"

Daniel didn't move. He just stood there, watching her.

"Daniel!" Lena screamed.

He looked at her one last time, his eyes finally, truly his.

"Remember who you were."

*00:00:05*

The seventh door opened.

A wave of freezing cold air swept through the chamber, smelling of metal and rot and something ancient.

*00:00:03*

The lights died.

*00:00:02*

Something breathed behind them. Something huge.

*00:00:01*

And Lena remembered the truth.

She had not been trying to stop the apocalypse.

She had been the one who started it.

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
