I didn't scream. I didn't call for the guards. I simply stood there, staring at the thin curl of smoke rising from the dead wick, my heart slamming against my ribs like a war drum.

Someone had been standing close enough to hear every word Freya whispered.

Close enough to snuff out a flame without me noticing.

I forced my hand to stop shaking and pulled my hood over my head, moving quickly down the corridor toward the east wing, where Cassian's study sat behind two heavy oak doors. I didn't care that it was well past midnight. I didn't care that a proper contract wife would have waited until morning to ask questions.

I knocked once, then pushed the door open without waiting for an answer.

Cassian sat behind his desk, a stack of border reports scattered in front of him, a single candle burning low beside his elbow. He looked up, and whatever he saw on my face made him rise immediately from his chair.

"Aurora. What happened?"

"Who was Lyra?"

The question landed like a blade dropped on stone. Cassian went very still, his gray eyes darkening in a way I hadn't seen before, not even when he spoke of war.

"Where did you hear that name?"

"Your cousin," I said, stepping further into the room. "She showed me a portrait. Told me Lyra was your first contract bride. Told me she died six months into her marriage to you, and that no one ever agreed on how."

Cassian's jaw tightened. He walked to the window, his back to me, his broad shoulders rigid beneath his dark tunic.

"Freya shouldn't have told you that."

"Then tell me yourself."

For a long moment, he said nothing. The wind rattled against the glass, the same violent howl that had chased me down the corridor minutes ago.

"Lyra was my contract bride two years ago," he finally said, his voice low and careful, like a man walking across thin ice. "Her family ruled a territory along the southern border. The marriage was meant to secure a trade alliance, nothing more."

"And?"

"And six months in, she was found dead in the training yard. Officially, a rogue wolf slipped past our patrols and attacked her." He turned to face me, and the pain etched into his scarred face looked ancient, worn smooth like a stone battered by years of tide. "Unofficially, there was no rogue. There was no attack. There was a knife, Aurora, and it wasn't a wolf's claw that put it in her chest."

My breath caught. "You think someone in this keep murdered her."

"I know someone did." His hands curled into fists at his sides. "I just never found proof of who."

The candle flame between us flickered violently, though no wind had touched it.

"Why didn't you tell me this before the contract was signed?" I demanded. "You brought me into a house where a woman was murdered and said nothing?"

"Because I intended to protect you from it," Cassian said, his voice rising for the first time since I'd met him. "I doubled the guard on your wing the moment you arrived. I assigned two of my most trusted soldiers to watch your corridor at all times. I was not going to lose another wife to whatever monster is hiding inside these walls."

The word another rang through the room like a struck bell.

I stared at him, searching his face for a lie, for some crack in his composure that would tell me he was hiding something darker. But all I found was raw, desperate fear, the same fear I imagined had lived quietly behind his eyes for two long years.

"I don't frighten easily," I said finally, my voice steadier than I felt. "But I'd like to know exactly what I've married into, Alpha. All of it. No more half-truths."

Cassian nodded slowly. "Tomorrow. I'll show you everything I've gathered on Lyra's death. Every report, every suspect, every dead end."

He crossed the room and, for the first time, reached out to gently grip my shoulder, his palm warm through the thin fabric of my sleeve.

"Whatever is happening in this keep," he said quietly, "I swear on my bloodline, I will not let it touch you."

I wanted to believe him. Some foolish, softening part of my chest wanted desperately to believe him.

That was when the door burst open.

One of Cassian's guards stumbled inside, his face pale as bone, blood soaking through the sleeve of his uniform.

"Alpha," he gasped, gripping the doorframe to stay upright. "Forgive the intrusion, but—"

"What happened?" Cassian was already moving, crossing the room in three long strides.

"The stable hand," the guard said, his voice shaking. "We found him twenty minutes ago near the west tower. His throat was—" He stopped, swallowing hard, his eyes flicking briefly, fearfully, toward me. "He's dead, Alpha. And there was a note pinned to his chest."

Cassian's whole body went rigid. "A note addressed to whom?"

The guard reached into his pocket with trembling fingers and held out a small, blood-smeared scrap of parchment.

Cassian took it, unfolded it, and I watched the color drain completely from his scarred face as his eyes scanned the words.

"What does it say?" I asked, my pulse roaring in my ears.

Slowly, wordlessly, he turned the parchment around so I could see it myself.

Written in dark, dripping ink, in handwriting I did not recognize, was a single sentence.

The Princess should have stayed hidden.

The candle on his desk guttered once, twice, and went out completely, plunging the room into darkness.

My hands shook as I took the folded parchment from the guard.I knew that seal. A small crescent moon pressed into dark wax, the same mark I used to find on the little notes my nursemaid left tucked under my pillow when I was a girl, silly things like sleep well, little star or tomorrow we'll pick berries by the stream."Mira," I whispered."You know her well," Damian said from inside his cell, his voice almost gentle now. "She practically raised you those first few years. Combed your hair. Sang you to sleep. Nobody in the palace ever thought twice about a quiet nursemaid coming and going through every hallway, every private room, completely unnoticed.""Shut up," Cassian said sharply, stepping between me and the bars.I didn't wait to hear anything else. I turned and hurried up the dungeon stairs, my father and Cassian close behind me, my heart hammering with every step.We reached my chambers, and I broke the wax seal with trembling fingers, unfolding the parchment inside. The handw

I stared at my father, waiting for him to say something else, something that would make the words he'd just spoken make sense. He didn't. He just sat there, looking older than I'd ever seen him look, his hands still shaking in his lap."Twenty years," I said slowly. "You've known for twenty years that someone murdered my mother, and you never told me.""I told you what I thought would keep you safe," my father said. "You were five years old, Aurora. What was I supposed to say? That someone inside our own palace poisoned your mother's tea, and I couldn't find who did it no matter how hard I searched?""You could have told me the truth when I was older.""I was afraid," he admitted quietly. "Afraid that whoever did it was still watching, still waiting, and that telling you the truth would only paint a target on your back before you were old enough to protect yourself."I thought about Damian, sitting in a cell downstairs with a smile on his bloodied face, claiming to know the answer my

My father's hand tightened around my shoulder."Explain yourself," he demanded, his voice low and dangerous, nothing like the calm, measured king I'd grown up watching preside over court.Damian only smiled wider, blood still staining his teeth from the fighting."Why would I make this easy for you?" he said. "You've had thirty years to notice what was happening under your own roof, brother. I'm not going to hand you the answer just because you finally caught me.""Take him inside," my father ordered the guards. "Lock him somewhere secure. We'll deal with his riddles later, once he's had time to think about the noose waiting for him."The guards dragged Damian away, still smiling, still silent about whatever else he was hiding. I watched him go, an uneasy feeling settling deep in my stomach. A man about to face execution didn't usually smile like that unless he still believed he held some kind of advantage.Cassian came to stand beside me, blood and dirt streaked across his face, his

For a moment, I couldn't breathe."Your uncle," Cassian repeated slowly. "You're certain.""I've known his face since I was a child," I said, my voice shaking. "Uncle Damian. My father's younger brother. He used to bring me sweets from the eastern markets when I was little. He sat at every family dinner. He was there the day I was born.""And now he's leading an army against your husband's keep," Cassian said grimly.Below us, Damian sat calmly on his black horse, watching my reaction from a distance, a thin smile spreading across his face like he'd been waiting his whole life for this exact moment."Surprised, little niece?" he called up. "You always were slow to see what was right in front of you.""Why?" I shouted down, my voice cracking despite myself. "Father trusted you. Gave you land, titles, a seat at his own table.""Your father gave me scraps," Damian shouted back, his calm cracking into something bitter and cold. "I was born only two years after him. Two years, Aurora. And

Everyone stared at the torches on the ridge. There were too many to count. The light stretched far along the hill, like a slow river of fire moving through the dark."How many men is that?" I asked."Enough," Cassian said. His voice was tight. "That's not a small raid. That's an army."Elira let out a shaky breath. "That's them. The rebels I told you about.""How did they know to come tonight?" Cassian turned on her fast. "Speak.""Because tonight was the plan," Elira said, her voice breaking. "Aurora dies out here at Hollow Ridge. Word spreads that the Iron Keep is weak, distracted, mourning. The rebels hit the walls while everyone is grieving and confused. That was always the plan, Alpha. I just didn't know how big it really was.""And if Aurora didn't die tonight?" I asked. "What then?"Elira looked down. "Then they attack anyway. Just with less of an advantage."Cassian didn't waste another second."Fall back to the keep, now," he ordered his men. "Bring the prisoners. Move fast."

Marcus stared at Julian like he was seeing a ghost."You're supposed to be halfway to the border by now," Marcus said, his grip tightening around Elira's arm. "That was the plan. You cause a scene at the gate, I finish things quietly, we meet at the old mill afterward.""Plans change," Julian said, echoing Marcus's own words from a moment ago, a thin smile curling at the corner of his mouth. "Especially when I realize my partner's been keeping secrets from me.""What are you talking about?""You never told me about her." Julian nodded toward Elira, still frozen in Marcus's grip. "Two years of paying you for information, and you never once mentioned you had your own reasons for wanting Aurora dead. Your own grudge against the Alpha.""It doesn't matter," Marcus snapped. "It got the job done.""It matters to me," Julian said, taking a slow step closer, ignoring the swords and bows pointed at him from every direction. "Because I've been sitting in the shadows for two weeks watching you b
