2 years later
“Hi.” I say when Jay opens the door. He smiles at me warmly.
“”Hi, come in.” He says moving back to let me in. we hug and then he closes the door.
“You look good.” I say walking behind him down the hallway.
“I do? Thank you.” He says turning back to look at me. “I started going to the gym.” He says smiling at me.
“I can tell.” I say smiling at him too. He really does look good. He lost a lot of weight. I can hear a lot of voices talking at the end of the hallway. I can tell he invited a lot of people.
“I want to go back to my university body.” He says when walking into the dining room. I enter the room last and my eyes scan the people at the table. I recognize a few of them but I don’t know a lot of the others.
“You were really buff then.” I say smiling at the many faces staring at me. “Hi everyone.” I say at the awkward silence in the room. They’re staring at me open mouthed and they’re making me feel self-conscious. I never know what to do when people stare at me like that.
They remain silent staring at me. I stand there feeling awkward.
“Shalom?” A very familiar voice says at the other end of the room. My heart starts beating so fast, I feel a little light-headed. I will my body to calm down I can’t faint in front of all these people. I get a weird feeling from my limbs. It feels like my blood is getting hot.
I take a deep breath and look in the direction of the voice. And there he is, the man that haunts my dreams. If these people staring at me were not standing in front of me I would swear this is one of my vivid dreams.
“Kane, hi,” I say into the deathly silent room. The amplified silence is making my voice sound louder than it actually is. Or am I talking too loud? I have no perception of time, sound, or anything really. My heart is beating so loudly in my ears that I can’t make sense of anything.
“Wow. This is crazy.” He says smiling at me and as soon as I see that beautiful smile of his my heart slows down. I get that smile for a moment; I look at him mesmerized by it.
I remember a time when he would smile that very smile at me. We were so young then, it feels like decades ago.
“Wait, you two know each other,” Jay says looking from me to Kane. I snap out of my thoughts, remembering where we are. I zoned out in front of strangers, that’s so embarrassing.
“Yeah.” I hear Kane say and I stand there awkwardly as twelve eyeballs stare at me.
“How do you know each other?” A girl asks looking me over. She looks at Kane and his smile disappears instantly.
“We went to High school together,” I say and she turns looking at me suspiciously.
“Yeah, I dated her best friend a long time ago.” Mathew, Kane’s cousin says chipping in. I look at him and he smiles at me sweetly. “Have a seat.” He says pointing to the chair next to him.
“Thank you,” I say walking to the chair. Kane’s girlfriend I’m assuming by the way she’s looking at me with dislike follows me with her eyes until I sit down.
“Can I offer you something to drink?” Farrow Jay’s girlfriend says when I sit down.
“Yes, water. Thank you.” I say insanely parched all of a sudden.
“You don’t want some wine?” She asks smiling at me warmly.
“No, I drove,” I say and she nods. She stands up and walks to the kitchen.
“This is amazing,” Jay says coming to sit down at the head of the table. He looks at me as he sits down. His eyes tell me he has so many questions but he knows this is not the time to have that conversation.
“This is my wife, Connie,” Mathew says to me. I turn to his wife and smile at her.
“Nice to meet you,” I say to her. As soon as we start talking the conversation starts up again. I breathe a sigh of relief because the attention is not on me.
Farrow comes back with my water; I thank her and take a sip. The cold temperature soothes my throat and kind of lowers my heated blood. Jay introduced me to the rest of the people at the table. He saves Olive, Kane’s girlfriend for last. She gives a small nod when Jay introduces us. The whole time she has her arm wrapped around Kane’s.
“Nice to meet you all,” I say to the people that I haven’t met yet.
“We haven’t seen you around here in a long time.” James, Jay’s brother says focusing on me with an accusatory look.
“I know,” I say and he makes a face at me.
“I thought you don’t like us anymore.” He says smiling at me.
“That would never happen,” I say smiling back at him.
“I hope so.” He says winking at me.”
“So what happened to this best friend of yours? You know the one Mathew dated?” Connie asks looking from me to Mathew.
“I’m curious too. Where is she?”James asks looking at me excitedly.
“She’s married with two beautiful daughters,” I say and James throws his hand at me bored.
“Uhg! That’s not interesting at all.” He says and everyone laughs.
“What did you expect me to say?” I say looking at him confused.
“Are you married?” Olive asks me over the laughter.
“No,” I answer and she nods slowly.
“Do you have kids?” Another girl asks looking at me.
“No,” I say again and they pass this look between them.
“Okay, let’s eat,” Farrow says standing up and taking Jay with her.
After dinner
A few people start to leave about half an hour after dinner. I look at Jay to let him know that I’m ready to go too.
“Stay for a while.” He says before I can open my mouth to say something. I give him the side and he smiles at me. I need to get home to my mother.
I stand up and show him the phone. I walk to the kitchen and call my mother. I should check on her and find out how she’s doing. I take a few minutes talking to her on the phone.
When I come back to the dining room the only person left is Jay. Everyone including Farrow is gone.
“How is she?” He asks when I come back to the dining room.
“She told me to leave her alone, so that should tell you how she’s doing,” I say smiling at him.
“So we can get comfortable?” He asks and I nod yes. He stands up and we move to the living room.
“I hope you’re not mad at me,” I say when we sit down on his sofa.
“I was mad at you but I got over it.” He says looking at me concern on his face.
“I am sorry, life just got hectic,” I say and he nods in understanding.
“You do know you don’t have to go through it alone right?” He says leaning forward looking at me.
“I do,” I say looking away. I can’t take his inspection.
“I was hurt when I found out your mother is sick and you didn’t tell me.” He says looking at me sad.
“I didn’t know how to tell you what was going on without burdening you,” I say and he looks at me like I’m dumb.
“Am I really that unimportant to you?” He asks his voice laced with hurt.
“I don’t mean it that way,” I say trying to make him see my side.
“It’s coming across that way.” He says and I realize I’m failing at explaining myself.
“I’m sorry,” I say looking at him.
“I know, just don’t do it again.” He says sounding so fatherly. If our conversation wasn’t serious I would laugh.
“I just got so overwhelmed with everything,” I say all the feelings of stress and fear filtering through my body.
“I know dude. I went through the same thing when I was in high school.” He says and I can tell he knows exactly what I’m feeling. The look in his eyes reflects mine. “I had my dad and siblings; I can’t imagine what it would have been like to go through it alone. Promise me you won’t disappear and deal with this by yourself.” He says that fatherly tone back.
“I promise,” I say looking at him feeling a little emotional.
“Good.” He says smiling at me. “So you and Kane, what’s up with that?” He asks his face lighting up instantly.
“Oh jeez,” I say looking at his happy face.
“I’m glad Jay convinced you to stay.” Kane says sitting on the sofa Jay just vacated. “He was pretty insistent I stay longer.” I say looking at him, feeling a bit weird. I’ve thought about this moment so many times. I’ve spent hours imagining what it would be like to meet him after all these years. But nothing could’ve prepared me for what I’m feeling right now. It feels like I’m the same girl that fell in love with him so many years ago. A decade ago to be exactly, I have the same feelings I would get when he was around. I feel so much excitement, joy, curiosity and intrigue. The only difference is there is a new feeling that plagues me; incompetence. He feels and looks different. He carries himself different; he has this air about him that makes me feel like I don’t belong. I’m struggling with that feeling because Kane is the only person I felt understood me. “I asked him to keep you here.” He says smiling guiltily. “So that’s why he bolted out of here when you walked in,” I say
When I open my front door, Jay is standing there with a big smile on his face. “What’s up?” I ask shaking his hand. “The sky and the sun and the clouds.” He says laughing at his own joke. “Come in.” I say moving to the side so he can walk through. I close the door behind him and turn to follow him down the hallway. “This place is coming along.” He says when we walk into the living room. “Yeah, it took a lot to get here.” I say looking proudly around my house. 7 years of school later I’m finally here. There was a time when I didn’t think I would get here. It has been a long and tedious ride. “I’m so proud of you man,” Jay says walking closer to me and giving me a brotherly hug. “Thank you, thank you,” I say hugging him back. “Speaking of I bought you this. A little housewarming gift.” He says handing me a bottle of Hibiki. “Wow, man,” I say looking at the bottle appreciatively. “You deserve it, man. This is incredible, you’re incredible.” He says a little emotional. “Thank y
“I’m at your gate open up.” Jay says when I answer. “Okay.” I say ending the call and opening the gate for him. About a minute later he knocks on my door. I go to the door and open it. “Hi.” I say when I open the door. “Hi beautiful.” He says leaning in for a hug. “I brought an old friend.” He says just as my eyes collide with Kane’s. I smile to hide the turmoil of feeling I feel when I see him. “Welcome, please come in.” I say letting them both in. “Thank you for having us over.” Jay says as they follow me to the kitchen. “It’s my pleasure,” I say leading them to my kitchen table. “Have a seat.” I say looking from Jay to Kane. “Thank you.” Kane says smiling. He looks around my house with so much interest. “I’ll get the wine.” I say going to the fridge. I need a moment to get my emotions in check. I didn’t think I would see Kane so soon. His being here is throwing me off; I don’t know how to feel about him being in my personal space. “This looks good.” Jay says looking at the
“Hey.” Kane says when I answer my phone. “Hi” I say on the end of the receiver. We stay for a long time; I don’t know what to say because I wasn’t expecting his phone call. I don’t know why he’s silent; he’s the one that called me. “It’s Kane.” He says like he snapped out of something. “I know how you are?” I say trying to move the conversation along. “I’m good and I am outside your house.” He says and I almost trip over myself. I walk to my security monitor in the kitchen and look at the screen. And there is a car at my gate. “Okay.” I say not really sure what to say. It’s kind of late for a visit and I just got home myself. I don’t think I have the energy to entertain anyone at this hour. “I was hoping we could talk.” He says sounding so unsure. I wait looking at his car trying to figure out what to do. My mother is home and I don’t want them meeting. But can I really turn him away? “Come in.” I say opening the gate for him. Hopefully, he won’t stay long; he has a girlfriend t
“Thank you for cooking for me.” Olive says raising her wine glass to me. I raise mine and we cheers. “De nada” I say and she smiles at me. “I really needed this night in.” She says taking a bite of her food. “That’s why I did this, we’re both overwhelmed and we needed to slow down and enjoy ourselves,” I say taking a bite of the food and making an appreciative noise. I put my foot in this lamb, it really tastes good. “Well, I appreciate you for being so thoughtful. We should do this more often.” She says smiling at me lovingly. “We should, I need to fly down to Cape Town more,” I say smiling at her and she tilts her head sideways looking at me. “Or I could move in with you.” she says and I almost choke on my food. I look at her to see if she’s joking and she’s serious. “Do you think that’s a good idea?” I ask looking at her cautiously. “Yes. We’re in this forever so why not move to the next step? I want to be with you forever, I don’t see why this is not a good idea.” She says
“Hey beautiful.” My best friend Noni says walking toward my table. I invited her out for brunch because I owe her a nice day out. I’ve been ignoring her like all my other friends. Spending time with Jay has shown me that I need to do better. I can’t use my mother as an excuse forever. “Hey, it’s so good to see you.” I say getting up to give her a hug. “I know, I missed you so much. We haven’t hung out in a long time.” She says when we let go of each other and sit down. “That’s my fault, that’s why I wanted to make up for disappearing on you.” I say and she smiles excitedly. “If that’s the case, I’m ordering all the expensive food on the menu.” She says looking at me mischievously. “You know what? You can order anything you want, but I should warn you I’m calling you when I can’t pay my bills.” I say and we laugh. A waitress comes to take our orders, she orders all the good food on the menu and the waitress leaves. “What’s been going on with you?” She asks when the waitress is go
“I’m so glad you called, I didn’t think I would ever see you again.” Charles says looking at me nervously. I sip my coffee looking at him, I don’t know if another date was a good idea but I’m open. He’s different I’m used to men that are very confident in themselves but I don’t want to judge him too harshly. One date is not enough time to make a conclusion on someone’s character. “I didn’t think I’d call either.” I say and he looks even more nervous. “But a good friend of mine told me to and I’m glad I did,” I say and he smiles at me sweetly. “I need to buy your friend a thank-you gift.” He says looking at me closely. "He loves gifts.” I say smiling at him. “I’m terrible at first dates and when I saw you I got all flustered and put my foot in my mouth.” He says looking at me embarrassed. “I must admit I am concerned. Do you ask every girl you meet to have your babies?” I ask looking at him trying to figure out if he’s playing me. “I do not. That reaction is purely due to you.”
“I wanted to give you a heads up; Shalom came with a date.” Jay says walking past me to get the front door. I look at him open the door and there she is; beautiful as ever. She walks in smiling at Jay and then someone walks in behind her. He greets Jay and then places his hand at the small of her back. I feel heat rise in my face. Shalom looks around the room and I wait for her to see me. I take a sip of my drink looking at how stunning she is. She’s wearing a strappy, loose dress. But the material is clinging to her curves. Her body is showing just enough for you to see that she’s all woman under all that dress. Her skin looks sun-kissed and inviting. It looks so smooth and soft. Her eyes find me and I can feel the electricity from across the room. I look at her unable to take my eyes off her. She takes a big gulp of air and I see her chest move up and down slowly. I can tell she can feel exactly what I’m feeling. I caress her with my eyes, letting her know that she should be stan
