Mark's POV

Nobody knew I was leaving.

That was intentional.

Cassie would have stopped me. Lark definitely would have stopped me. So I waited until the house was quiet, and the morning was still grey, and I pulled on the most ordinary clothes I owned and walked out through the east gate like I was just another pack member heading somewhere unremarkable.

The ride to Vale Pack took about two hours.

I used every minute of it.

Sorin's voice kept replaying in my head whether I wanted it to or not. *I

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 106

Cassie's POVI was mixing Lark's morning treatment when the door opened and Mark walked in.He looked like someone who'd been riding hard and hadn't slept. His jacket was dusty, and his hair was pushed back in the way it got when he'd been running his hands through it repeatedly, which he only did when something was sitting heavy on him.Lark looked up from the bed. "Where have you been?"Mark pulled up a chair and sat down and looked at both of us. "Vale Pack."The spoon in my hand stopped moving.Does he know about the letter?"I went alone," he said before either of us could respond. "Before you say anything. I know. But I needed to find something, and I wasn't going to find it sitting here watching Sorin's face every morning."Lark's jaw tightened. "Mark—"Oh, it isn't about that, he went to find help for Lark."There's a healer," Mark said. "Her name is Berta. She's old. She trained with Sorin back then, and she knows things he doesn't." He looked at me directly. "She said it's n

People who didn't have a twin probably couldn't understand what that actually meant. It wasn't just growing up together or knowing each other well. It was deeper than that.Like two things made

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 104

**Cassie's POV**I was in the middle of changing Lark's bandages when Jonas knocked. He didn't come straight in. He never did when the news was bad. He'd knock and then wait outside like he needed a second to prepare himself as much as he needed to prepare me. I'd noticed that about him a long time ago."Come in Jonas," I said.He pushed the door open slowly. "Luna, there's a messenger outside. From Vale Pack."I didn't say anything for a moment. I just kept my hands moving on the bandage even though my brain had already stopped.Vale Pack.Jamie.I don't know why I knew. I just did. Like something in me had been waiting for it, and the moment Jonas said Vale Pack everything just settled into place in a way that didn't feel good at all."Leave whatever they brought on the table," I told him. "I'll come out in a minute."He nodded and set something down and left, and I finished the bandage and tied it off and smoothed it down and tried very hard not to think about anything for those th

Cassie's POV "What do we do first," I said. Sorin looked at me for a moment before he answered. Like he was measuring how much I could hold right now and deciding to give me all of it anyway, because he knew I'd want that more than he'd want to protect me from it. "We are stabilizing him tonight," he said. "His body has been working too hard for too long. Whatever reserves he had, he burned through today." He moved back to bed and looked at Lark with that careful clinical attention. "He needs rest. Proper rest. Not the kind he's been allowing himself." "And after tonight?" "We manage it carefully." He pulled his hands together slowly. "There are herbs. Treatments. Things that won't reverse what's happening but will give his body more time to work with." He paused. "How much time depends on how well he cooperates." I almost laughed at that. Lark cooperated after being told to slow down. Lark accepted accepting that his body had limits he couldn't push past by sheer will! M

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 102

Cassie's POVThe female omegas were gathered in the east hall when I found them.Seven of them, ranging from the youngest, who couldn't have been more than fifteen, to Mrs Mina, who had been managing pack domestic affairs longer than I'd been alive.I'd called the meeting myself that morning. Winter is fast approaching, so we needed to prepare for it.Store inventory, resource allocation—it was a kind of work that didn't stop because everything else was falling apart.I stood at the head of the table. “Famine is approaching,” I paused. Their mouths dropped like I delivered bad news.Technically, famine is bad news, but it's something that can be avoided and that was the reason for this meeting. How to avoid famine."The grain stores need to last us through to late spring at minimum," I said. "Which means we cut the current weekly distribution by one-third starting next week."Mina looked up from her notes. "The younger omegas won't like that.""The younger omegas will like starving in

Lark's POVFor the umpteenth time, I tossed round the bed, the duvet was already off my skin. The birds hums chirped, destroying all my hope of sleeping. It was a new day.I didn't sleep well.I had lay there long after Cassie's breathing evened out, staring at the ceiling, turning everything Mark had said over in my mind. The border. The stores. The cold season creeping in while we bled resources we didn't have.It wasn't just the pack crisis keeping me awake though. It was the way Cassie had looked at me when I came back from the meeting. That quiet steady look she gave things she was trying to figure out. She hadn't said anything. Neither had I. We'd just existed in the same room carrying our separate weights and pretending the other one couldn't feel it.That was new for us. That distance.I didn't like it.By the time grey light started coming through the curtains I'd already made up my mind. I sat up carefully and swung my legs over the side of the bed. My right hand started alm

Cassie "Well, well, well" I clapped my hands emerging from the shadows, my hand swinging the earrings. "Covering your crimes as always," Daisy turned around so quickly, her back thudded against the wall. She was pale, whiter than I'd ever seen her. Like a flushed mouse trapped in a cage. I almos

CassieThe palace halls were chillier than ever before.I sensed it in the manner in which air shifted around me, heavy and oppressive, as though walls themselves were shutting out. The bright torches that marched once along the stone corridors were now dim and smoky, a feeble source of illuminati

AlexaThe crescent birthmark wasn’t something I should have remembered. But once I saw it once on Daisy’s shoulder, same as the one Cassie used to have. The mark flooded my memory,it wouldn’t leave me alone. It crawled into my brain at night, whispered questions during meetings, buzzed in the back

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 49

Cassie stood outside the council hall, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, the early morning mist clinging to her cloak. Behind the heavy oak doors, the council waited. Mark, Lark, Elder Rami were discussing in hushed tones. The rest of the half the palace with ears pressed to the walls. The
