While everyone was out and about enjoying the Luna initiation ceremony I wasnât even allowed to watch.
Let alone dream of participating.
Even omegas were invited but not me, a lowly palace maid who was only here by the mercy of the queen.
On the bright side, I had the palace to myself and I didnât have to witness Roland choosing a mate.
I wasnât sure I would ever heal from it.
I was free to roam places I had never been before.
For one night, I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted, yet I still chose to return to the only place that gave me solitude.
An empty terrace that was almost a hidden spot in the large palace garden, covered by so many trees and vines on the wall.
I have been coming here every night since I was 17.
Tonight was a full moon and the terrace was exceptionally beautiful.
There was a small pond in the middle that reflected the moon, making the water glow and shine like crystals in the dark.
I moved closer over the body of water to touch it, that was when I noticed a presence.
He stood hidden in the dark shadows, his eyes focused on me.
I shifted backwards and hugged my chest tightly to keep my heart from jumping out of its cage, âAlpha Roland, what are you doing here?â
âDo I need permission to tour my palace?â
âNo you donât⌠but the Luna initiation ceremony⌠everyone would be looking for you.â
âEveryone?â
âYes, everyone.â
âThen why arenât you there yourself?â
âI am not allowed to be in attendance.â He didnât answer, he moved towards me taking brief steps.
I stepped backwards, maintaining the original distance between us.
He stopped moving when he realized I had backed up.
For a moment, just a brief moment, a part of me allowed myself to believe that he noticed my absence at the ceremony and decided to come here.
But in my over 20 years of being in this palace, Roland had never noticed me, so who was I kidding?
It wonât be a random night that he will start thinking about me.
He was about to speak when the cloud cleared up completely revealing the full moon.
The moon wasn't bright like other nights; it shone red and gold, casting its softness over us.
It was time.
Time for the Luna to be chosen.
He looked up at the moon, âI have to go.â
I nodded in response because that was the only response I could manage as my head suddenly felt heavy.
The entire terrace appeared to be spinning in that moment.
Just as Roland moved past me, it was like electricity jolted through both of us.
He turned towards me, gripping my hand, a gold cord wrapped around both our hands, binding us tightly.
âMate!â He groaned, staring deep into my eyes.
Before I could make out what just happened his lips crashed into mine.
Hungry and dazed with need.
I gave in to his kiss, opening up my mouth to grant him access.
He shoved his tongue into my mouth taking me whole.
In minutes our clothes were on the floor, tossed aside as we tangled ourselves giving into our desires.
âZyra.â He moaned my name as he nibbled on my skin.
I was too consumed to even process the fact that he had just called my name.
He knew my name.
My back arched forward as I pressed my body into his, desperate for more skin contact.
âRoland, I want morââ Almost like that was the go-ahead he needed.
He turned me over and thrust deep into me.
My mind was a mess but my body was even worse. It became like jelly, my legs no longer supported my own weight.
Roland placed a hand just below me to steady me.
The pace of his thrust increased, the sound of skin slapping and our moans mixed drowning out our surroundings.
And just as I was about to reach a release, he bit me on my shoulder with his fangs marking me.
The action tipped us over as we both reached our release at the same time.
The mark was painful at first but the pain was soon replaced by sweetness that spread all over my body.
âââ
Eight weeks and 10 days had passed since the night I had sex with Roland at the Terrace.
I knew the weeks because my courses were exactly eight weeks late.
I held the pregnancy strip in my hand, staring at the positive sign.
I was pregnant.
I had not spoken or seen Roland since that night.
I would have thought he was avoiding me, but what business does the Alpha have with a maid like me?
âZyra!â Marcellineâs voice echoed around the place, sometimes I imagined the windows shaking whenever she shouted.
I threw the test strip in the bin, to answer Marcelline.
âYes.â
âYou stress me a lot by making me shout.â
âI am sorry.â It wasn't my fault I didn't have a wolf and wasn't able to mind-link like the others, but with Marcelline, I always had to apologize.
"Get two cups of my special tea ready.â she barked in response, not bothering to look at me.
"Okay.â
I brought the tea in after some minutes, but she wasn't alone anymore, Roland was there seated across from her.
I served Marcelline and then Roland.
He completely avoided my gaze, not paying any attention to me.
What was I expecting?
But it still didn't help the ache in my chest as I shook slightly as I served the tea.
I waited for their meeting to end as I paced down the hall, transferring my weight from one foot to the next.
âAlpha Roland," I called out stopping him in his tracks.
He didn't turn to face me, but that didn't stop me from moving closer, âAbout that nightâ.â
He turned to face me pinning me with his glare, "What happened that night was a mistake.â
I touched the mark on my shoulder, âDoesn't this mean I am your fated mate?â
The closer I got to him, the hotter it burned.
A mocking laugh broke out from Roland.
âYou⌠a mere human, as my fated mate?â
âThen explain the mark and full moon attraction.â
âA mistake, as I said..â
I had to use the wall as support as my knees knocked beneath his glare.
The sting of just two words made my breath shudder.
I gripped his hand purely from instinct, and a gold cord appeared binding us together.
âWe are mates, I may be human, but I grew up with wolves all my life so I know a mating bond when I see one.â
He backed me up against the wall, "I already have a mate, this is nothing but a mistake from the moon goddess.â
âThe moon goddess doesnât make mistakes.â I barked in response.
âI would never accept you as my mate, so let's be done with this BS.â
âNo!â I pleaded in objection to what he was about to do.
His eyes shone brighter, as he ignored my plea, âI Roland Vale, reject you Zyra Moore as my fated mate.â
The words slammed into me like a physical blow.
A sob broke out from me as pain grossed my features, falling me to my knees.
I clutched my chest, screaming. My heart felt like it was splitting open.
âRolandâŚâ I sobbed, my voice barely a whisper now.
âPleaseâŚtake it back.â
But he was already turning away.
The golden cord between us flickered violently, then snapped.
The emptiness that followed was worse than the pain.
I lay there trembling, my tears soaking into the stone floor, while the bond that had tied my fate to his dissolved into nothing.
Rejected. Unwanted. Alone.
Roland's POVâŚWas I that blind to the resemblance?Even a stranger could see clearly that Ronan was mine.âRoland, we need to talk.â I ignored her and made my way downstairs. My pack was dying and the solution had been hidden away in another realm.A few minutes of a lapse in judgment won't change the fact that she had kept a secret as huge as this from me.I was not going to back down easily, my son was leaving this realm with me whether Zyra liked it or not.I didn't get a chance to take in my surroundings since I arrived unconscious. The house wasn't much, it was a bit old but it felt cozy like a real home.Unlike the palace Mat always had this cold and eerie feeling to it.When my father died, the only person I looked forward to meeting at the palace was Zyra -Even if I never made my feelings known and always kept my distance, just watching her from afar spread a warmth in my chest. My mother was tiresome to be around so I always avoided her, though I always wondered if she knew
Zyra's pov…I pressed for more information from Roland but he didn't answer anymore.Whatever he was saying was from his sleep, he wasn't conscious. But strangely after his last statement his fever completely broke.I moved him to the bed.He only had his pants on, but it was completely soaked.I got a change of clothes from Papa's closet.I gulped hard as I unbuckled his belt to free him from his pants. He wasn't thrusting or sleep talking anymore, he just lay asleep peacefully as I changed him.His body tensed a bit when my hand touched his torso.I paused for a moment thinking he was awake. This was harder than I thought, my throat tightened as flashbacks of that night five years ago kept replaying.“G
âDon't be stubborn, you will die.ââI wonât die, my wolf has just refused to heal me.ââWhy?ââBecause he's a piece of sh*t,ââI thought each person's wolf was like a personal best friend? How can your wolf be this cruel to you?ââHe's pissed at me.ââpissed to the point of allowing you to die?ââHe won't allow me to die, he just wants to prove a point.ââWell, you are losing a large amount of blood, quite fast.ââTake me to the car, Christopher would know what to do.âRoland was twice my size, carrying him would be nearly impossible.âI am not sure I would be able to lift you, and you are⌠naked.âHis clothes lay beside him in shreds.âGet Christopher.âI nodded and made my way to the exit.I searched for his car and ran towards it.Once Christopher spotted me, he ran in my direction as well.âWhat is it?â âIt's Roland⌠He's injured.ââWhat?ââHe told me to come get you, that you would know what to do.ââLet's go.âWhen we returned Roland was still bleeding badly and his eyes were s
Roland's POVâŚI got in the car fuming with anger. I did not have the right to get angry or jealous with who Zyra was with but I still couldn't help it.She was probably doing it to get a rise out of me, I had to leave, I couldn't stand her flirting with another man.I had to admit she wasn't the same person I had rejected five years ago.She had changed.âWell, that's what you get for rejecting your first love and mate.â I paused. My wolf has just spoken to me.For the first time in five years, he actually said a word to me.âGlad to see we are back on speaking terms,â âDon't push it, I still haven't forgiven you.â âYou know I had no choice.ââEveryone has a choice, you just chose to be blind to it.âWarmth spread across my chest, hearing his voice again was so good.I only just realized how much I missed it.The loneliness in my chest was leaving.I was about to reply when I felt a sudden pang in my chest. At first it was light then it hit in waves.âAre you doing this?â I yelled
Zyraâs POVâŚI followed behind him, matching his long strides as he walked. He stopped in front of a large door, âWait here maâam.â he said before he left me at the door and entered.I stood there for minutes just waiting and staring at the door. Another beat passed, a piercing scream reached my e
Zyraâs POVâŚâWhat the fuck are you doing here?â He yelled towering over me.I flinched a bit, then released myself from his grip creating as much distance between us as the room could allow.I took a deep breath, âI didnât need your rescue, I had things under control.ââYou didnât answer my question
Zyraâs POVâŚâI want you to handle a high-profile client.â Andrew cut straight to business as he stepped into the store. He didn't even exchange a greeting.âIf you can pull the deal through you can make some good extra cash.ââOkay, what do I need to do?ââThis client is a bit difficult, he hardly l
Roland's POVâŚâI want a DNA test on Roland.ââThat can be arranged,â Christopher replied lazily.âWe would need to figure out a way to get his sample though.ââActually there would be no need for that.ââWhy?â I eyed him curiously."... what did you do?â I added when he didnât respond immediately.
