57. Nonchalant

“What are you going to do?” I asked, my once relieved mind filled with tension again. “I knew it was a bad idea,” I said, my voice cracking slightly.

Katie wanted to speak but her words failed her. She just broke down into silent sobs and I pulled her into a hug.

“Is it a normal thing for witches to pass out after doing a difficult spell?” I asked softly, my voice barely above a whisper.

Katie sniffed back her tears before responding. “Yeah, it happens sometimes but I didn’t want something like that for my siblings.”

“Everything is going to be okay.” I tried reassuring her with a pat on her back.

“Can I go inside the room now? I want to play with Dahlia!” Katie’s little sister, Sophia, came running up the stairs and stood at the edge with her hands crossed over her chest.

“Just wait a little bit longer, you can’t go inside now,” Katie replied, forcing her voice to be steady. Sophia wasn’t pleased with the answer and she frowned her face before heading back downstairs.
