Seraphina

The dropped communication stone clattered on the marble floor like a death knell. I backed away into the shadows, clutching his dropped phone to my chest, my heart hammering like a trapped bird.

“You can’t let him get away with this,” a low, lethal snarl echoed inside my mind. It was Nyssa, my wolf spirit. For years, she had been dormant, suppressed under my human weakness, but the sheer weight of Cassian’s betrayal broke her chains. “He treated us like garbage. Make him pay.”

Hot, fiery rage replaced the cold shock in my blood. Nyssa was right. I was done cowering. If he wanted to play dirty, then game on.

I didn't run away. Instead, I pushed open the grand double doors of the pack hall, my eyes glowing a feral crimson as Nyssa seized control.

I expected to find just Cassian and his friends, but the scene inside was far worse. Sitting at the head of the long oak table was Alpha Malachi himself, surrounded by the elder council and the highest-ranking Betas. Cassian was standing near the hearth, laughing with his father—the current Beta—bragging about his upcoming title.

The entire room fell dead silent as I strode in.

"Seraphina?" Cassian blinked, his smooth mask slipping into panic as he saw the phone in my hand. "What are you—"

"Everyone," I projected my voice, letting it ring clear and cold across the vaulted ceiling. I stared directly at Alpha Malachi and the elders. "I have an announcement."

"Sera, shut your mouth and get out!" Cassian hissed, lunging forward to grab my wrist, but I slapped his hand away with enough force to shock him.

"I am Cassian's mate," I declared loudly. gasped ripples spread across the council members. Cassian’s face drained of all color. But before anyone could digest the scandal, I delivered the killing blow.

"And I, Seraphina Vance, reject you, Cassian Darkmoor, as my fated mate. I sever all ties to you, your bloodline, and your future—now and forever."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Cassian doubled over instantly, clutching his chest with a violent gasp as the mate-bond ripped out of his soul. His father slammed his fists onto the table in raw fury, while the Alpha stared in disbelief. Seeing the utter humiliation on Cassian’s face gave me a sick, intoxicating burst of thrill. He wanted a high-blood female? Now he had nothing.

I turned on my heel and walked out, letting the heavy doors slam behind me.

The adrenaline faded the second I crossed the threshold of my small cottage on the edge of the pack territory. Tears of pure grief finally spilled over my cheeks. Rejection was a poison that burned through every vein, and despite my proud stand, my heart was shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

Suddenly, my front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.

I scrambled back on my bed as two figures stormed in—Cassian’s mother, Evelyn, and his father, Beta Marcus.

Before I could breathe, Evelyn crossed the room and cracked her hand hard across my face. The slap echoed like a gunshot, throwing me onto the floorboards.

"You weak, worthless stray!" Evelyn shrieked, grabbing me by my hair and yanking my head back. "How dare you embarrass my son in front of the Alpha? A piece of trash like you rejecting the future Beta?!"

"He lied to me—" I choked out, but she struck me again, hard enough to split my lip and taste copper.

"Drag her out," Beta Marcus ordered coldly, pulling a heavy silver-threaded whip from his belt.

He didn't wait. He grabbed my arms, hauled me into the courtyard, and brought the whip down across my back. Crack! Pain exploded across my spine. Crack! Five times the silver leather bit into my skin, tearing my dress and drawing hot blood.

"Take her to the deep dungeons," Beta Marcus growled to two heavy guards. "Teach this little ghost a lesson she won't survive."

As the guards seized my bleeding arms, I looked across the courtyard—and my breath caught in my throat. Standing near the treeline, watching silently, were my own foster parents. The people who were supposed to protect me.

They didn't move. They didn't shout. They simply turned their backs and walked inside, abandoning me to the wolves.

“Let me take full control!” Nyssa screamed in my mind, rearing up to break the guards' grip. “I’ll slaughter them all!”

“No, Nyssa, stop!” I begged her internally. “If you surface now, they will use Wolfsbane. If they poison you, we both die.”

I let them drag my limp body down into the abandoned, subterranean cellars below the pack house. It reeked of rot, damp earth, and ancient blood. They chained my wrists and ankles to a heavy iron post in the center of the dark dungeon floor.

Beta Marcus stepped into the dim torchlight, his eyes cold as granite.

"You will crawl to Cassian, beg for his forgiveness on your knees, and retract your rejection before the Solstice sunrise," Marcus demanded, lifting a heavy iron rod. "Or you will never leave this room alive."

I spat blood onto his polished boots and forced a broken, mocking smile.

"Cassian got... exactly what he deserved," I whispered through swollen lips. "And I'd reject him a thousand times over."

"Break her," Evelyn spat from the doorway.

The iron rod struck my ribs. Again. And again. Pain consumed my world until my vision blurred into blackness, the metallic taste of my own blood filling my throat.

Hours or days passed in the icy dark. I drifted between consciousness and agony, my body broken, my wolf weakened.

Then, in the dead of midnight, the heavy dungeon lock clicked.

It wasn't the guards.

A shadowy figure stepped into the cell, holding an iron vial and a long silver dagger. It was Gideon—Cassian’s closest friend from the balcony.

"Cassian sent me," Gideon whispered, his eyes gleaming with a twisted, dark intent as he unbolted my arm chains. "He can't have a living rogue holding his mate-bond hostage during the ceremony tomorrow. He needs you dead... but we're making it look like you escaped into the Shadow Territory."

He hauled my limp, bleeding body over his shoulder and slipped out through the secret escape tunnels beneath the fortress.

Twenty minutes later, he dumped me hard onto the freezing snow past the pack border line—the deadly, forbidden threshold where no wolf ever returned.

"Die quietly, little stray," Gideon sneered, raising his silver dagger to plunge it into my chest.

THUD.

Before the blade could touch my skin, a massive, pitch-black wolf collided with Gideon at terrifying speed, snapping his neck with a single, sickening crack.

Two more massive wolves bounded out of the blizzard, surrounding my broken body. As the snow swirled around us, the three beasts shifted into three towering men—each radiating a pressure so heavy it crushed the air from my lungs.

The tallest one with cold silver eyes knelt beside me, his thumb brushing the blood from my jaw.

"Look at her blood," the second one with battle scars growled, his voice vibrating in my chest. "It's not normal pack blood. It's glowing silver."

"She carries the Lost Imperial Line," the third one whispered, a dangerous smile spreading across his face. "And her bond is wide open."

The silver-eyed Alpha locked his gaze with mine, his voice echoing like thunder inside my mind:

"You're safe now, little Empress. But to kee

p you alive... you belong to the three of us now.”

His fingers, rough and calloused from training, tangled in my dark hair, drawing my head back gently to deepen the kiss.I leaned into him for a heartbeat, tasting the rich amber whiskey on his tongue, but a cold prickle of hesitation made me press my hands flat against his broad chest.“Cassian, wait…” My voice was barely a whisper, breathless and trembling. “Shouldn’t we… shouldn't we wait?
