LOGINIvy Hart was rejected by her Alpha mate in front of the entire pack called weak, unworthy, an embarrassment to his bloodline. Humiliated and broken, she walked into the forest and vanished, presumed dead. Three years later, she returns. Not as the omega they discarded — but as the Alpha of her own pack, with a bloodline older and more powerful than his. Now Kane Ashford wants her back. But Ivy didn't come home for love. She came home for what he owes her.
View MoreThe whole pack was watching.
Ivy Hart stood in the center of the training circle, her hands trembling at her sides, and stared up at the man who was supposed to be hers. Kane Ashford didn't look at her the way a mate should. He looked at her the way you'd look at something you'd stepped in by accident.
"Kane." Her voice cracked on his name. "Please. Don't do this here."
"There's no easy way to do it anywhere." His jaw was tight, but his eyes were flat, already somewhere else. Already looking past her toward the front row, where his father stood with his arms crossed and Selene Ashford stood beside him in a red dress like she'd known this was coming. Like she'd planned it herself.
"You're my mate," Ivy whispered. "The bond doesn't lie, Kane. You feel it too. I know you do. I've felt you feel it."
"I feel it." His voice dropped so only she could hear, and for half a second something flickered behind his eyes, regret, maybe, or shame. Then it was gone, buried under the mask he wore for his father. "That doesn't change what you are. An omega with no bloodline, no pack standing, no power. I'm the future Alpha of Ashford territory. I need a mate who can stand beside me in front of the council. Not one I have to protect from every threat that walks through our borders."
"So protect me," she said, and hated how small her voice sounded. "Isn't that supposed to be the whole point of a bond? Isn't that what you swore to me the night you found out I was yours?"
He didn't answer. He turned to the crowd instead, lifted his chin, and said the words that would end everything she thought she understood about her life.
"I, Kane Ashford, reject Ivy Hart as my fated mate."
The bond didn't break quietly. It tore.
Ivy felt it rip through her chest like claws dragged through her ribs, and she dropped to her knees in the dirt in front of two hundred pack members who had gathered specifically to watch her fall. Someone laughed. She thought it might have been Selene, though she couldn't be sure through the roaring in her ears.
"Get up," her father hissed from somewhere behind her, his voice tight with humiliation rather than concern. "You're embarrassing this family in front of the entire council."
She looked up at Kane one last time, searching his face for even a trace of the boy who used to sneak into the kitchens with her at midnight. He was already walking away, Selene's hand sliding into his like it had always belonged there, like Ivy had simply been keeping the space warm.
"You'll regret this," Ivy said. Her voice didn't shake anymore. Something in her had gone very cold, very still, like a door closing somewhere deep inside her chest. "Not today. Not this year. But you will."
Kane didn't turn around.
That night, Ivy packed a single bag with shaking hands, walked past the pack border stone her whole life had been fenced inside of, and didn't look back once. Rumors said the forest past Ashford territory belonged to nobody wild, unclaimed land, full of things that didn't answer to any Alpha and never had.
She didn't care what was out there waiting.
Anything, she told herself, was better than staying somewhere she wasn't wanted anymore.
By morning, the Ashford Pack would wake to find the rejected omega gone without a trace. Within a week, they'd stop looking for her. Within a month, they'd stop mentioning her name at all, the way you stop mentioning something you're ashamed you ever had.
They would call her dead.
They would be wrong.
They stood at the Thorne border two weeks later, exactly where Ivy had walked away from everything she used to be, exactly where a rejected omega had once disappeared into unclaimed forest with nothing but a single bag and a broken heart. The council investigation had stripped Damian Ashford of his title within days of the hearing evidence poured in once people realized it was finally safe to speak, old enforcers and pack members finally confirming what everyone had quietly suspected for twenty years but never dared say aloud while he still held power. Selene had quietly withdrawn from Ashford territory entirely within the same week, her family distancing themselves fast from a man whose downfall threatened to drag anyone standing too close down with him. Kane hadn't asked for his father's seat when the council offered it to him as the obvious successor. He'd asked the council for something else entirely: time, and permission to make things right on his own terms, without a title forc
The archive was already burning by the time they reached it, flames licking up through the old wooden shelving where Magnus's mother had once hidden twenty years of buried truth, smoke pouring out through the broken windows in thick black plumes."The treaty!" Ivy shouted, shifting mid-stride and tearing through the door before anyone could stop her, before Wren's hand could close around her arm to pull her back. She found it exactly where she'd left it, smoke thick in her lungs, the edges of the paper already curling from heat, the box beginning to blacken at the corners. She grabbed it, along with everything else in the file, and staggered back out into the clearing seconds before a section of the roof collapsed behind her in a shower of sparks.Kane caught her as she fell, both of them coughing, the treaty clutched safely against her chest, wrapped in the singed remains of the file folder that had protected it just long enough."You could have died in there," he said, gripping her
The attack came at dawn, exactly the way Magnus predicted it would, exactly three days after Ivy locked that treaty back inside the archive.Ivy was already awake, standing at the edge of Thorne territory with Wren and a dozen warriors, when the scent of Ashford wolves hit the wind too many of them, moving too fast, straight toward the northern border marker where the two territories had coexisted in uneasy silence for years."They're not here to talk," Wren said grimly, shifting her weight, ready, her eyes scanning the tree line for the first flash of movement."No," Ivy agreed, already feeling the shift building under her skin, an old instinct sharpened by three years of training she'd never asked for and desperately needed. "They're here to make sure that treaty never reaches the council. Damian isn't a man who negotiates when he's cornered. He destroys the evidence and lets the fire cover his tracks."The first wave hit the tree line minutes later a dozen Ashford wolves, faces she
Ivy found the letter three days later, tucked inside an old file Magnus kept locked in the Thorne archive records his mother had gathered decades before she died protecting land nobody else wanted, back when the Thorne name meant nothing to anyone outside these mountains."This doesn't make sense," she said, spreading the yellowed pages across the war table, her fingers careful against paper so old it felt like it might crumble at the wrong touch. "This is a treaty draft. Between the Ashford Pack and my birth family, dated over twenty years ago."Magnus went very still, the color draining slightly from his face. "Where did you find that?""Buried in the archive, under records about the old Thorne bloodline, in a box I don't think anyone's opened in years." Ivy's hands were shaking now, and not from anger this time. "Magnus, my birth parents weren't just some minor pack that died off in a border skirmish, the way everyone always told me. They were negotiating territory rights with Dami
