Chapter 32

Serena

The knock on the front door echoed like a warning bell.

I didn’t answer it Kael did. I heard his voice, low and tense, before I ever saw them, men stepped inside. Elders. You didn’t need to see the silver rings on their fingers or the age in their eyes to know. You could feel them.

The kind of power that doesn’t announce itself, because it never had to.

I stayed in my wing. Watched from the upstairs landing as Kael led them through the foyer and into the main council room.

There were four of them. Elder Alric wasn’t among them—he’d been under heavy scrutiny since the poison scandal. But his shadow lingered in the ones who came today. His allies. His kind.

I stood in silence as their footsteps disappeared into the marble halls. They hadn’t asked for me yet.

But they would.

Later I was summoned.

Not invited—summoned.

A maid delivered the message to my apartment. No title, no warmth. “The Elders would like a word with you. Now.”

I left Ari with Ma. Wiped my

  • Rejected for being human    Chapter 33

Serena I should have known something was coming the moment the hall lights flickered. Moonclaw Pack meetings weren’t usually so grand. Normally, Kael met with the council in his private study or handled issues one-on-one. But this wasn’t a usual meeting. This was a performance. And I was the unwilling centerpiece. The estate’s Grand Hall was already full when I arrived. Council members. Elders. Beta Rowan. Several ranking wolves I didn’t know by name. And Mirah—perched off to the side in her usual blood-red silk, eyes following every movement like a vulture waiting for a corpse to drop. Kael stood at the head of the room, tall and composed, dressed like the Alpha he was. But his eyes flicked to me the second I stepped through the doors, and something in his shoulders softened. I didn’t return the look. I walked in, chin high, jaw tight, Ari’s favorite silver pendant around my neck like armor. Let them look. Let them wonder. Let them try me. A hush fell over the h

Serena My son was fine again. Ari’s laughter echoed from the garden below, clear and sweet in the late morning air. I stood behind the window, watching him run between the hedges with a wooden sword in hand, dueling invisible beasts, cape flapping behind him like he was born to rule the world. And Kael was there. Again. Far across the yard, near the stone wall that edged the estate’s training field. Not close. Never close. Just… watching. He didn’t speak. Didn’t move toward Ari. Didn’t wave. But his eyes never left him. This was the third time this week. He came like a shadow—appearing at a distance, watching until Ari was called back inside. Then he’d vanish before anyone could see. Except me. I always saw. And each time, the sight of him standing so still, so quiet, tore a fresh seam in the wall I was trying to keep up. Because he looked broken. But he wasn’t the one who nearly lost his child. He wasn’t the one who spent years

Serena I closed the door behind the guards and leaned into it like I could hold the world out just by standing still. The apartment was quiet — too quiet. Ma had finally gone to lie down, after spending all morning watching Ari like she could will his lungs to keep breathing. He was asleep again now, curled against his stuffed wolf, cheeks still pale, but his fever was low. The poison was leaving his system. He was healing. But I wasn’t. I walked into the kitchen and stared at the tray still sitting on the counter — the leftover honeycakes from last night. Untouched. I’d been too busy watching Ari laugh and twirl to notice who was offering what. Too hopeful to think that even in this place, danger could still sneak through silver platters and servant smiles. I gripped the edge of the counter. My arms shook. It started slowly — just a tightening in my throat, a breath that wouldn’t come right. But then the memories slammed into me all at once. Ar

Serena It was supposed to be a morning of peace. I woke with the memory of laughter still echoing in my ears. The night before had been… surreal. Beautiful, even. I hadn’t let myself feel too much, but for a few brief hours, it felt like maybe — just maybe — things were starting to heal. Ari had danced until he collapsed in my arms, cheeks pink and hair damp with sweat. Ma had carried him to bed while Kael and I shared a brief, awkward goodnight. I didn’t sleep much. Too many eyes had been on us last night. Too many shadows lingering in corners where light didn’t reach. But I didn’t expect to wake and find the sun already high in the sky — and Ari still asleep. I knocked on his bedroom door lightly. No answer. “Ari?” I called, nudging it open. He was curled under his wolf blanket, one hand tucked beneath his cheek. I smiled at first. He looked peaceful. Then I stepped closer. And my stomach dropped. His skin was pale. Too pale. His lips, tinged with b

Serena I used to wonder what Ari’s fourth birthday would look like. In my mind, it was always quiet. A small cake, maybe, with Ma humming in the kitchen while I lit a candle. A paper crown, hand-drawn. Gifts wrapped in old newspapers. Maybe one or two friends from the neighborhood. Simple. Safe. But not this. Not banners bearing his name stretched across the vaulted ceiling of the Moonclaw Great Hall. Not golden ribbons on every chair, or Elders seated in a row of honor, waiting for the Alpha’s son to appear. Not waitstaff gliding silently with trays of roasted meat and fruit compotes. And not Kael — tall, dark, immovable — standing at the entrance of the hall with Ari in his arms, his hand resting protectively on our son’s back. This wasn’t the birthday I imagined. This was something else entirely. — “Are you alright?” Ma asked me as I adjusted my dress. Her voice was gentle, but her eyes didn’t miss much. “No,” I admitted. She nodded. “Good. Then you won’
