Chapter 3

작가: Soda
"Stella, this is the biggest buck of the hunt. Eat. Keep your strength up."

At the banquet table on the lawn, Julian carved the thickest, bloodiest cut of rare venison. He dropped it right onto Stella's plate.

Tonight was my mating ceremony.

Yet the entire square cheered only for Stella. Just minutes ago, she walked back into the pack lands with a signed peace treaty, ending decades of war with the Northern Pack.

Julian turned to me. He hacked off a chewy, gristly scrap with raw veins and shoved the plate my way.

"Chloe, eat something."

The thick stench of raw blood hit my nose. I looked at the red puddle on the plate, my stomach twisting with nausea.

"Julian, I cannot eat raw meat," I said, keeping my voice flat. "I am wolfless. Raw meat makes me sick. It tears my stomach up. Why did the kitchen not make a single cooked meal?"

Julian's hand froze in midair.

Every bit of softness left his face. His brows snapped together in irritation.

"Chloe, do you have to throw a tantrum now?" he hissed, his Alpha tone bleeding through. "Everyone worked themselves to the bone setting up this ceremony. Who has time to start an extra fire just to cook your food?"

"Exactly!" My mother sneered from the side, looking at me like I was dirty street trash. "You do not even have wolf instincts, yet you whine about a little blood! Your sister just saved this pack at the negotiation table. Must the whole family cater to a defect?"

My father frowned, his lip curling in disgust. "Don't eat, then. Starve. Do not ruin tonight for this family."

I looked at them.

These people shared my blood. In their eyes, my weakness was just drama, and my very breath was a mistake.

I did not argue. I quietly pushed the plate away.

The ache in my chest was gone. Only numb, empty silence remained.

My mother turned to Julian. Her sneer instantly morphed into an eager, fawning grin.

"Julian, every Alpha from the nearby packs is here tonight. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance!"

Julian wiped the grease and blood from his hands. "Go on."

"Stella pulled off a miracle. We need to announce the treaty right at the ceremony! Let the other packs see our strength, and let everyone honor Stella!"

I snapped my head up, staring at them in disbelief.

A mating ceremony was sacred. My own mother wanted to turn it into Stella's victory party.

Julian glanced at me, torn for a split second. "Wait..."

He knew how long I waited for this night.

Then he caught the sparkle in Stella's eyes. He sighed, reaching out to wrap his fingers around my hand.

"This is huge for our pack. What if we push the ceremony back a little?" He looked into my eyes, talking himself into it. "Everyone knows you are my Luna anyway. You don't mind, right?"

He did not wait for my answer. He signaled his butler.

"Cancel the vow reading beneath the Sacred Moon Tree," Julian ordered. His voice rang loud and clear against the night air. "Clear that slot. Stella speaks then."

The butler froze, his eyes darting to me. "Alpha... the vows seal the bond before the Moon Goddess. Without them, the Luna has no real authority..."

"I said cancel it!" Julian barked, slamming his Alpha aura down like a hammer. "Since when do I repeat myself?"

The butler bowed his head instantly. "Yes, Alpha."

The three of them huddled together, laughing and talking about stage lights, seating charts, and the guest list.

Julian even reached out to adjust the diamond pin on Stella's dress himself.

Not one of them looked my way.

I was his bride-to-be. My vows were gone. I sat there like a ghost.

I stood up and walked away from the crowd.

The bonfire roared. The drums beat on. Nobody noticed me leave.

Back in my tiny guest room, I pulled my travel bag from beneath the bed.

It was light. I had almost nothing to pack.

The fancy dresses that never fit right, the cheap trinkets Julian tossed my way, I left them all behind. None of that belonged to me.

I pulled open the bottom drawer. Inside lay my worn, dog-eared notebook.

It held all the soothing herbal recipes I gathered over the years to manage my weak human body. It was the only thing in this whole estate that was truly mine.

I slid the notebook into the bag and pulled the zipper shut.

Clean and done.

A thunderous howl suddenly ripped through the night sky outside my window.

The pack was hailing Stella, their hero.

I tossed the strap over my shoulder. I walked to the window and looked down.

Stella stood right at the center of the lawn, bathed in firelight. She leaned against Julian, but her pretty eyes held an ugly flash of greed.

She tugged at Julian's sleeve. Her voice carried right up to my window, sweet and manipulative.

"Julian, it's such a shame," Stella pouted. "I risked my life for this treaty. But tonight is your mating ceremony. Everyone will forget my speech the second your ceremony starts."

The lawn went dead silent around them.

I stared at Julian's back.

He looked down at Stella with pure, sickening adoration.

I prayed for twenty years for him to look at me like that. Just once.

Then, Julian gave the order that broke everything.

It severed the very last shred of hope clinging to my soul.

"Then the ceremony waits for you," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute power.

He grabbed Stella's hand and raised it high for the pack to see.

"Butler, listen up! The mating ceremony moves to midnight! Tonight, prime time belongs to Stella!"

One year later.Seattle, an autumn cliffside overlooking the ocean.Inside the bridal suite, I studied my reflection in the mirror. I wore pure white silk. The phone screen on the vanity lit up. A text flashed from an unsaved number.[I wish you happiness.]I looked at the four words in complete silence. No anger. No tears. I flipped the phone face down onto the table. I never typed a reply.Outside on the cliffside lawn, the sea wind fluttered the white drapery. This mating ceremony had very few guests. It was quiet. Yet it carried the crushing, lethal power of ancient Lycan royalty.Rowan stood waiting at the end of the floral arch.He wore a sharp black suit. I stepped into view. His dark eyes flared molten gold. Pure devotion burned in his gaze. He saw only me. I was his one and only.I took a deep breath, gathered my train, and walked straight toward him."All right, most envied pair on the West Coast," Maya grinned. She wore her maid of honor gown, acting as our officiant today.

Julian froze dead in his tracks. Ice-cold rain pounded his face without mercy."You thought I was blind?" I stood tall in the freezing rain. This ended tonight. "Your love was a joke. I was your backup plan. Tell me, Julian. Did you ever want me, or was I just your leash to keep Stella close?"Julian's pupils shrank."You... you heard me..." His throat worked. He wanted to explain, but his mouth couldn't form a single word."Yes. The night of her victory party. You were drunk. I stayed stone-cold sober. I heard every single word." I looked at him with dead eyes. "Now you finally know the agony of a ripped soul. But did you ever give a damn about my pain? I was your fated mate. Yet you treated me like a dirty secret. You shoved me into second place. You handed me her leftover garbage every single day!"Julian parted his lips, but nothing came out. Raw, ugly regret bled across his hollow face. Only right now did the truth hit him. He had personally murdered every drop of love in my heart

I turned to shut the door.Slow, mocking claps echoed from the street.A red stiletto heel kicked the half-open glass door wide.Stella strolled inside. Her bright red trench coat looked spotless. She leaned against the doorframe with a smug grin. Her cold eyes swept over me. Then they landed on Rowan behind me."Running away really did the trick, huh?" She twirled a curl of her hair, her tone dripping with venom. "All our lives, this is the very first time you stole the spotlight from me. Tell me, does playing the main character feel addicting?"I met her eyes without blinking. "This is my shop. You are not welcome here. Be smart and get out on your own."Stella didn't get mad. Instead, she took a slow step forward and dropped her voice to a poisonous whisper."Look at you, all brave now, Chloe. You've been gone a month, and you already dare to raise your voice at me. Everyone laughed at you the night you bolted. They called you an ungrateful little stray." Stella glared straight into

The front door slammed open with a violent crash. Wind, rain, and freezing air blasted into the bakery."Throw those damn flowers away!"Julian's raw roar tore through the shop.He was soaked to the skin. His bloodshot eyes locked onto the moon orchids in my hands, burning with pure madness. The agony of the broken mate bond had eaten him alive for an entire month. His proud Alpha wolf was now just a dying, feral beast, shaking with weak fury.He stormed toward me, slamming his hostile Alpha aura straight at Rowan."Get your hands off my woman!"Rowan didn't even flinch. He stepped forward, shielding me behind his broad frame. Then, his ancient Lycan aura dropped. It hit the room like a tidal wave, a hundred times deadlier than Julian's power.Julian's knees buckled instantly. The sheer weight of royal blood crushed him down onto one knee. He clutched his chest and spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the floor."Drop your pathetic act in my territory," Rowan said, staring down at him. H

"Two calming herb tarts! One to go. Maya, extra moon grass syrup on that one!""Got it! Make way for the best baker on the West Coast!" Maya laughed from behind the counter.I crushed fresh moon grass and scattered it over the warm tarts. A rich herbal scent drifted through the bakery. The Seattle afternoon sun poured through the glass window. It warmed my shoulders and chased away the cold in my bones. It had been an entire month since I ripped my mate bond apart and ran away from the Crescent Pack.I never looked back.Instead, I used my herbal notebook to mix calming remedies into my pastries. My treats calmed rogue fever and feral wolves. Back at the manor, they called my work useless tricks for runts. But here in Seattle, my pastries saved lives. My little shop, Full Moon, was famous across the entire West Coast.I was finally free from the cruelty and the endless comparisons. "Search! Send every guard out! Tear this entire territory apart until you find her!"Julian grabbed the butler by the collar and slammed him hard against a tree trunk. The searing fire in his chest ripped through his flesh. Black spots danced across his eyes. The blood on the grass had dried into dark, crusty stains. Under the cold moonlight, it stung his eyes like acid.It was Chloe's blood. It was the raw, open wound of a broken bond. She had torn their link apart with her bare hands.Another wave of copper hit his throat. Julian dropped to his knees and choked up thick blood onto the dirt."Julian! God, what happened?!"Heavy footsteps shattered the quiet night.Chloe's parents rushed into the clearing with several guards. Clan Elders Robert and Evelyn looked terrified. Evelyn took in the pool of blood and the broken Alpha on his knees, and her face twisted with pure fury."Where is that wolfless trash? The ceremony ended hours ago! Everyone is waiting! Where did she go?!""She brok
