LOGINCole POV
I met up with Carson and Marly; expectant looks on their faces. “Where is she?” Marly asked tentatively. I shook my head, “She left before I could find her,” I admitted. “She could not have known you were here,” Marly assured me, concern on her face.
“I do not think she knew either,” I admitted. “I smelled her scent of jasmine, but I smelled fear more so,” I shared with both of them. “Fear?” Carson asked, concern in his voice. “Fear. And it was rampant,” I confided in them. “We have to find her,” Carson stated, Alpha mode ready to take over.
“I have no idea where to start looking,” I said, a wave of uneasiness rolling over me. “Let’s go speak with the host Alpha. He will know which packs had been invited. You can start there,” Carson suggested. Of course, the Alpha would know who had been present, and I would be able to track her down through that knowledge.
We went directly to the Alpha, requesting a meeting for first thing in the morning. I knew it would not be appropriate to pull him away from the Gala. He had responsibilities to his guests. And Carson had responsibilities to the rest of our pack members.
As we re-entered the Gala, Carson was approached by five different couples. Three of our males had found their female mates, and two of our females had found their mates. It was exciting to see the excitement in our pack members faces, but it was also bittersweet.
I should have been with them, waiting for Carson to welcome my mate into the Full Moon Pack. But that was not the case, and I had to hide my disappointment for the sake of our pack members. They were bubbling with excitement, as Carson welcomed the three new members.
Both Carson and Marly hugged the two females who were leaving our pack. Both females were going to strong packs, who treated their female she-wolfs with respect. The packs also welcomed strong warriors, which both females were. I knew they would be in good hands and enjoy happy lives.
As everyone turned and walked away to enjoy the rest of the evening, Marly noticed another of our female’s off to the side, tears in her eyes. We immediately approached her, but I had a sense of what was wrong. “He rejected me, Luna,” she whispered as Marly wrapped her arms around her.
The girl cried on Marly’s shoulder, as Carson looked pissed and ready to destroy whoever broke this female’s heart. She was an Omega but was training to be a warrior. “He said he could not be with an Omega,” she stuttered out as Marly stepped back from her.
“There was a time I was also an Omega and rejected by my mate. I found Carson as my second chance mate, and I have never been so appreciative of that first male rejecting me,” Marly shared quietly with the Omega. The Omega looked hopeful to Marly, “Do you think that could happen to me?” she asked.
“I think the Moon Goddess has something bigger planned for you,” Marly counselled the young female. The female wiped her tears and smiled at Marly, “Thank you, Luna,” she said before standing awkwardly beside us. “Would you like me to take you back to the hotel, or do you want to stay at the party?” I asked her.
I knew how I felt about the party at the moment, and I would not mind the distraction of taking her back to the hotel. “I would like to leave. He is with another, and I do not want to watch them for the rest of the evening,” she admitted. I smiled at her, “Let me bring the vehicle over, and I will pick you up,” I told her. She had a look of relief as she nodded and proceeded to go with me to the doors of the gala.
“Leaving so quickly, Beta?” the Alpha inquired. “I will return. I look forward to meeting with you tomorrow morning,” I replied, as the Alpha looked at me. I am sure he remembered I had last been looking for my mate. “Of course, I will see you at 10 am tomorrow morning,” he replied.
Nodding, I left the she-wolf at the doors while I went to retrieve the SUV. As I returned, I noticed a male was standing in front of the female wolf, yelling at her with arms flailing. She was trying to remain calm, but I could see tears in her eyes once again.
I quickly exited the car and raced over to stand between the couple. “Who the hell are you?” the male asked. “Who the hell are you?” I replied. “You are going home with him?” the male asked the female. “So, what if I am. You have a date, remember?” she responded. Ahh this is the male who rejected her. “What do you want?” I asked him, confused as to why he was here.
“She is my mate, and now she is leaving with you,” he responded. “Last I heard you rejected her,” I reminded him. His face went red, “I made a mistake,” he said, embarrassed. “Well, that seems to be a you problem,” I stated as I looked to the female.
“Do you want to stay and talk to him?” I asked her, prepared to do whatever she wanted. She looked to the male, and then looked to me, “Yes, I would,” she responded shyly. “Okay, I will be around if you need me,” I assured her as she moved back with the male who took her hand and gently led her back into the Gala.
Looks like I am on my own after all, I considered with a chuckle. I hoped they could work out their differences, and the female would find happiness. Much like me, I had to hope I would find my mate and take her away from whatever was hurting her.
Now I just had the mystery of finding her.
Jessica POV We had made our way to the holding cells and had entered the building, hearing the screams of my grandmother’s outrage. As we approached her cell, she quieted down, watching as we opened the door and entered. The cell door slammed behind us, as we moved further into the room. “You have finally come to your senses,” my grandmother stated. “No, we have come for answers,” I replied, as she watched me from her seat across the table. She had been cuffed to the table so she could not move and anything she might have as powers or talents would be stifled. “What do you want to know? That your mother has been suffering while you have prioritized this pack?” she responded bitterly. “This pack is my family,” I stated. “Your family is being held hostage. Being tortured,” she conveyed. As if reminding me this was not my family. “Where is she?” I questioned. The woman sitting across from me
Jessica POV Having had enough of my grandmother, Cole had her taken to the holding cells. She screamed in outrage the entire way, but I did not care. She was a distraction that I did not need. “We need to discuss what we learned with Carson,” Cole said to me. I knew he was right. We needed to be prepared, and this was the first hint we had gotten as to why they were staggering their attacks. We entered the pack house and went directly to Carson’s office. Not surprisingly, Marly was already there with Everly in her stroller. “How is she?” I asked Marly, as we took our seats. Marly smiled, “She is great. It was a big adventure for her,” Marly shared. I smiled; Everly was adorable and I could only imagine what it would be like to have my own little piece of Cole and me. Whoa. Where did that thought come from, I wondered. “What the hell was that attack?” Carson questioned. I cleared my thro
Jessica POV There was chaos everywhere. The elderly, women and children were being rushed to the underground bunkers for safety. I could see something falling from the drones and as it hit their targets the wolves fell to the ground, pain evident in the screams. I raced to one who I saw down and felt the wound. It burned my skin, but Belle quickly healed me. “It is a temporary paralysis drug,” Belle conveyed to me. I sat back in shock, “What the hell are we fighting?” I questioned as I thought quickly about how to protect the pack members. I quick tossed up barriers between us and the drones. Some drones were captured between us and the barriers, so I immediately started taking them down with my ability to focus on the offending drones. “Cole, you need to focus on taking them down,” I yelled through our mind-link. Cole joining me in taking out the drones, was helping us protect the members a
Jessica POV It had been a couple days since the attack. It was like we were being tested. The night of the fight and then the waiting. Nobody had let their guard down. We were all on edge, but knew we had to be diligent. We would not risk losing anyone else. We had buried the warriors we had lost. It had been a difficult experience. Knowing these brave men and women had fought for something they believed in, and had lost, was painful for me. I was the root cause of those deaths, and I was struggling to make peace with this reality. As if sensing my thoughts were going dark, Cole took my hand, “You need to move past this, Jess,” he murmured. “I know but it is easier said than done,” I admitted. He smiled sadly at me, as he understood where I was coming from. “Why don’t they just make their next move, for fuck’s sake?” I exclaimed. Carson, Marly and Cole looked up at me in surprsie. “What?” I asked, embarr
Jessica POV “Jessica! Jessica!” I heard as I groggily came back to my body. My head had a stabbing pain in it, and I was trying to remember what happened. I had not opened my eyes yet, but I could hear Cole frantically shouting my name. “Stop yelling,” I murmured. “Open your eyes, beautiful,” Cole said, panic in his voice. I squinted, trying to open my eyes but the light was blinding me. “The light,” I whispered, as I kept my eyes closed. “Okay, try now,” he encouraged. I cautiously opened my eyes and this time there was no light blinding me. I slowly blinked, looking around until my eyes landed on Cole’s. “There you are,” he said softly, as he leaned forward and kissed my forehead. “What happened?” I asked, as I tried to sit up. Cole put his hand on my shoulder, as the doctor continued to check my vitals. “We were hoping you could tell us,” Cole replied. I paused for a moment trying to r
Jessica POV I could feel the tension rising in the waiting area, the longer we were forced to sit with no news. Cole was fuming at the lack of communication from the doctor. I tried to assure both Marly and Cole that Carson would pull through but neither heard me when I spoke. Each lost in their own feelings of loss. I knew I could make a difference, if only I could get past the medical team and directly in to see Carson. As I sat there considering my options, I heard the swish of the doors. I looked up, as Marly and Cole moved to stand in front of the doctors. Two had come out of the operating room. “What is the news?” Cole questioned hopefully. Marly was holding on tightly to Cole’s hand. While I felt a moment of jealousy, I knew she needed his support. And I knew they were only friends. I quickly calmed my wolf and moved to stand with them. Shaking her head, the lead doctor looked at Ma
Jessica’s POV I was embarrassed that Cole had seen my scars, but he had said they did not matter. We had returned to our room and were settled into bed. I hated to admit it, but sleeping with Cole by my side, made me feel safer and more content. Belle whispered in my mind, “Tou
Cole POV Everything was happening so fast. The man on the screen left immediately, not sticking around beyond stating the device had been stopped. Carson was shouting orders, as doctors scrambled to help Marly. She was raced out of the room, and suddenly it was very quiet.
Cole POV I was pacing in the hallway as we waited for Carson and Marly to show up. Jessica was sitting in the chair, seemingly calm but I knew she was as uptight as I was about this situation. I sat down, realizing I was not helping her by letting my emotions get the best of me.
Jessica POV I had spent the rest of the day touring around the pack with Cole. Everything he had shown me was exciting and new. We were eating an ice cream cone, when Cole burst out laughing. “What?” I asked, confused with what he was laughing at. He leaned forward and with hi
