Two students are forced to share off-campus housing due to a housing crisis. Strict house rules are set- no late nights together, no touching, no crossing lines. But shared kitchens, midnight strolls and conversations, and stolen glances make the rules unbearable.

HOUSING TROUBLES

~~RACHAEL~~

“BEEP BEEP” I jumped up from my bed as I heard the sound of my alarm going off. Oh my God, I am so late, the time is freaking 7:35am, how many times did I snooze this shit. Mum is so going to blow my head off. Quickly, I ran to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, washed my face and hightailed it out of there to my closet. “Dress responsibly Rach”, mum said yesterday. What did she expect me to wear when my whole wardrobe consists of sweatshirts and joggers, I quickly put on a black T-shirt with my favourite ash joggers while putting a black scrunchie on my wrist, looked at the mirror to confirm that I didn’t look like my current predicament. I ran down the stairs into the kitchen, snatching a candy bar from the counter top when I heard the door knob rattling, ‘Oh fudge’ I was so going to get it now. Mum entered in her scrubs looking more tired than when she left yesterday, I just stood there, she was still trying to lock the door, I knew the moment she turned back I would be done for.

“Rach!!! Why are you still here, did you forget you have to be at the Dean’s office by 8 sharp, especially if you want a good room?” she said while looking at her watch for the time. It is currently 7:45 and I am still here, ‘Bye Mom’ I said while running out the door, because I knew I was about to get an earful which I am currently not ready for. I jogged to the bus station, paid to get to the train station, then took the train to school. You see what I have to deal with if I don’t get any accommodation in the school’s dorms?.

I jumped down from the train with a candy bar in my mouth, while trying to tie my hair up with the scrunchie on my hand. I looked at the information board at the gate and immediately knew where the Dean’s office is located, I all but ran there, while looking into my bag to carry my files out, the moment I looked up, I felt my body collide with a rather muscular one and I fell to the ground with a loud thud. I looked up to see that the person who had a full head on collision with me just kept walking like nothing happened, with the little energy I had left, I got up and dusted my bum off with my hands while making my way to the office. The time was already 8:30 and I knew I was already so freaking late, as soon as I got to the office, a girl walked passed me smiling like her life goals had been met, I saw the guy who ran into me some minutes ago looking so pissed and honestly, a little bit stressed. I walked up to the secretary smiling “Hello, Good morning, please I am here to secure a slot in one of the dormitories”. The secretary looked at me with a sad smile and said “I’m sorry dear, we just gave the last slot for the female halls to the girl who just left, and all the dormitories are filled. Did you not see the memo sent to your email that the hostel allocation starts by 7am sharp?”. I felt my smile leave my face immediately, I didn’t see anything like that yesterday, I quickly looked at my phone to see that truly an email was sent yesterday, how did I not notice this?. Mom will be so pissed at me.

I turned back to the secretary, “Please is there anything that can be done, I really need a school dorm, I can’t keep coming from home for classes?”. She looked at me sadly then her face brightened like she just got the best idea ever. “There is something that can be done, there is a house available off-campus beside the school, it has exactly the same feature as the school dorms, but you have to register for it with a roommate and currently, he is the only one available who is looking for accommodation “ she said pointing to the boy who knocked me to the ground some minutes ago. Oh no no no no no, life can’t do this to me, why me, he didn’t look like someone who was going to be a suitable roommate but I guess this is what I get for sleeping like a log of wood. “Okay, I agree to the housing arrangements”, I said, the guy looked at me like I had three eyes on my head. The secretary smiled and asked him if he was okay with the housing arrangements, he just shrugged his shoulders, she smiled while clicking her keyboard. The next thing I knew, she printed two papers and she gave them to us with two keys. “Welcome to Peace University, I hope you have the best experience school has to offer”. ‘Thanks’ I said while taking my paper, the other guy grunted some words and walked off.

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LATE NIGHTS

~~LATE NIGHTS~~ ~~ALICIA~~ The rain starts out slowly. Not the aggressive kind that rattles windows, but the slow steady fall that sounds like fingers tapping gently against glass. Outside, the world feels far away- blurred by darkness and water. Inside the room, the candle remains lit, the little flame dancing weakly every time the wind slips through the cracks of the window frame. I sit cross-legged on my bed feeling shy all of a sudden with my arms wrapped loosely around my body. Xavier leans back against his mattress, seated on the ground, legs stretched out, hands clasped together as though he’s afraid to move them. The power is still out and honestly at this point, I’m not sure we have any hope of seeing light till tomorrow. Secretly, I don’t really want the light to come back now. Weirdly, the candle light softens everything. His sharp edges, his rigid

  • Roommates with a Curfew   DARKNESS

~~DARKNESS~~ ALICIA It has been about two weeks since Xavier and I spoke, the only thing that happens in this room is just us brushing past each other when we find either of us are in the room. I don’t know where he has been sleeping for the past how many days; all I know is he always comes back looking stressed. Sometimes I even feel a little pity for him until I relay the events surrounding my mug and I feel my spirit flare up all over again like the event just happened. Stepping into the house and meeting it empty doesn’t surprise me because that’s how I have been entering the house for the past two weeks. It’s Wednesday, my off day, I have been outside enjoying the school’s peaceful scenery, taking some pictures, and doing some videos to send to my mum later. I just want to take my bath and sleep; I stopped to get some food when I was on my way back from school. I take off my clothes and step into the bathroom, I’m

  • Roommates with a Curfew   MISTAKES

~~MISTAKES~~~~ALICIA~~I honestly don’t know how long this understanding with Xavier is going to last, [don’t get me wrong, I know what you guys must be thinking, “he hasn’t done anything wrong, why is this girl thinking so much”], because it takes a second to mess things that are already planned and currently I have trust issues that makes me question any and everything. I am on my way to work since all my classes for today have been cancelled, apparently one of our lecturer’s lost one of his family members, so all the lecturer’s in my faculty decided to pay his family a visit to pay their condolences. I clock in and greet Mrs Pat who was currently stacking books on the shelves, she smiles showing the age behind her pretty face with the wrinkles that line her eyes and blows me a kiss, I do a little display of catching the kiss and put it in my pockets, making both of us laugh. I head to the staff room and pick up my tag, drop my bag on the shelf and say a little praye

  • Roommates with a Curfew   WORK

WORK ~~ALICIA~~ Well, this class was a complete waste of time, because tell me why the lecturer kept reading a textbook for us, a textbook that we have to buy to pass the course. I guess I’m never attending this class again then, I stepped out of the class and headed straight to work at the library. I greeted Mrs Pat [she insisted I call her that], headed to the back office, dropped my bag on the shelf and pinned my tag on my shirt. Heading to the new books that arrived today, I went to sack them in their respective shelves, ranging from horror to education, to all sorts of topics. When I was done I went behind the counter to input the books into the system, by the time I was done inputting over two-hundred books, I noticed it was already getting dark, I closed up the account for today, which was very easy after Mrs Pat’s surprisingly great teachings. I was about to log out of the system and switch it off when a boy barged in through the doors letting in a gust of wind, “Hi, I am s

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LOST

LOST ~~XAVIER~~ I returned very late last night, I had to spend as much time as I could with my family because we rarely get to spend much time together for a while now. I took the twins to the mall, bought some toys for them and some important things for myself, before taking the train back home. I have a class by 7am and I am already dressed and ready to go, I mean how dressed can I be other than a shirt and a jean trouser to complete the bad boy look. I don’t know how my department did it but I was added to a group chat with all my 'supposed' course mates. I left the room by 6:55 because the classes are walking distance from the house and I want to use the five minutes I have to look for where my class is being held, since I currently do not know my left from my right in this brand new wonderful school environment (spot the sarcasm) I could have sworn that I had passed this biochemistry block sign at least two times, yet I still couldn’t, find the damn LHA classroom, what did LH

  • Roommates with a Curfew   FREE DAY

FREE DAY~~XAVIER~~I went to the Dean’s office yesterday after I closed from work to take my class schedule, the secretary offered me the school map but I declined with a shake of my head. I was going to figure out the in’s and out’s of this school once I find the time, eventually. Wednesday’s are no class days for me, so I immediately call Mum to let her know. “Hi big bro, mama, Xav wants to speak with you !!!”, I heard my baby brother, Liam, loud voice, then I heard the pattering of his little feet on the ground as I’m guessing he was running to give my mum the phone. “Hi Xavi”, I heard the voice of my baby sister, Laura, calling my name in the background which put a huge smile on my face. The sound of shuffling welcomed me until I heard the sweet sound of my mother’s voice. “Hello baby, how are you doing, you didn’t send the video of your room like I asked you to, how is work? I hope you are doing okay”. I told her how things have been going for the past three days and about my ti
