BOUNDARIES

~~ALICIA~~

“What the hell do you think you are doing, sir?”, I screamed. He turned back and looked at me like I had just asked the stupidest question ever. “I’m going to shower since I can’t go back to bed and last I checked, you didn’t mention any rule concerning me being shirtless”, he threw back at me. There was a little bite to his words but I ignored it and said “Can you please change in the bathroom for now, until I get used to this? [if I ever get used to this] Please, thank you”. He huffed an incoherent response and waltzed into the bathroom with his unreasonably large towel sprawled on his broad shoulders. I arranged my things and was done settling in after an hour or so. Mr Huff Puff left the room about 30 minutes ago, allowing me to finally calm down. I immediately fished out my laptop from my cupboard and called Mum on Skype, I knew she would be at home at this time.

“Hi Muma, I am finally done settling in, I just wanted to let you know I missed you already”, I could feel a really bright stupid smile on my face as I got up from my bed to show her the room, that if someone entered the house right now, they would think I was about to go crazy, but I didn’t care because my mum was my all. “Hi sweetie, I’m so proud of you baby and I’m sure your dad would be too”, I heard her sniffle a little but in a second, she wiped her eyes and smiled at me then continued “So tell me, how is everything going, how is your roommate, did you tell her how pissed of you were at her bumping to you?”. At this point, my ability to speak left my body because I remembered that I never told my mum my supposed housemate was a boy, a hunk of a man in fact. I cleared my throat then speaking softly preparing for her to yell at me after, I said ‘’ Mum, my roommate isn’t a girl, it’s a boy, we were the last two people who were in search of accommodation”. I hadn’t even counted up to three when I heard her scream ‘’Rach, what do you mean you are living with a boy who you do not even know from Adam?’’. I just kept shut and shrugged, she knew I wasn’t going to say anymore so she let out a puff of annoyance and continued ‘’How is he? is it safe being alone with him? I need every detail you can get on him for me and his phone number too, in case of emergencies’’

I whispered a low ‘okay mum’ and she smiled and said she would call me later. I waved her bye and blew her a kiss. Getting up from bed, I changed out of my house clothes, took my keys and locked the doors before heading to the Dean’s office to get my class schedule and a map of this school, because it is too freaking huge. On getting there, I met the secretary, got all the information I needed to start classes tomorrow. I have always disliked resuming classes on days that aren’t Monday’s especially when I was in high school because I feel like my week isn’t complete, I know, I can already hear you ask yourself, what’s the difference between resuming on Monday or Wednesday? Looking at my class schedule, I see tomorrow is my free day, I guess Wednesday’s aren’t so bad after all, I glanced at the paper again to see some of the courses I will be doing this semester. Turns out I’m going to be doing two calculation courses as an Economics student. I quickly went back to the house and hopped into my bed and I was out like a light.

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LATE NIGHTS

~~LATE NIGHTS~~ ~~ALICIA~~ The rain starts out slowly. Not the aggressive kind that rattles windows, but the slow steady fall that sounds like fingers tapping gently against glass. Outside, the world feels far away- blurred by darkness and water. Inside the room, the candle remains lit, the little flame dancing weakly every time the wind slips through the cracks of the window frame. I sit cross-legged on my bed feeling shy all of a sudden with my arms wrapped loosely around my body. Xavier leans back against his mattress, seated on the ground, legs stretched out, hands clasped together as though he’s afraid to move them. The power is still out and honestly at this point, I’m not sure we have any hope of seeing light till tomorrow. Secretly, I don’t really want the light to come back now. Weirdly, the candle light softens everything. His sharp edges, his rigid

  • Roommates with a Curfew   DARKNESS

~~DARKNESS~~ ALICIA It has been about two weeks since Xavier and I spoke, the only thing that happens in this room is just us brushing past each other when we find either of us are in the room. I don’t know where he has been sleeping for the past how many days; all I know is he always comes back looking stressed. Sometimes I even feel a little pity for him until I relay the events surrounding my mug and I feel my spirit flare up all over again like the event just happened. Stepping into the house and meeting it empty doesn’t surprise me because that’s how I have been entering the house for the past two weeks. It’s Wednesday, my off day, I have been outside enjoying the school’s peaceful scenery, taking some pictures, and doing some videos to send to my mum later. I just want to take my bath and sleep; I stopped to get some food when I was on my way back from school. I take off my clothes and step into the bathroom, I’m

  • Roommates with a Curfew   MISTAKES

~~MISTAKES~~~~ALICIA~~I honestly don’t know how long this understanding with Xavier is going to last, [don’t get me wrong, I know what you guys must be thinking, “he hasn’t done anything wrong, why is this girl thinking so much”], because it takes a second to mess things that are already planned and currently I have trust issues that makes me question any and everything. I am on my way to work since all my classes for today have been cancelled, apparently one of our lecturer’s lost one of his family members, so all the lecturer’s in my faculty decided to pay his family a visit to pay their condolences. I clock in and greet Mrs Pat who was currently stacking books on the shelves, she smiles showing the age behind her pretty face with the wrinkles that line her eyes and blows me a kiss, I do a little display of catching the kiss and put it in my pockets, making both of us laugh. I head to the staff room and pick up my tag, drop my bag on the shelf and say a little praye

  • Roommates with a Curfew   WORK

WORK ~~ALICIA~~ Well, this class was a complete waste of time, because tell me why the lecturer kept reading a textbook for us, a textbook that we have to buy to pass the course. I guess I’m never attending this class again then, I stepped out of the class and headed straight to work at the library. I greeted Mrs Pat [she insisted I call her that], headed to the back office, dropped my bag on the shelf and pinned my tag on my shirt. Heading to the new books that arrived today, I went to sack them in their respective shelves, ranging from horror to education, to all sorts of topics. When I was done I went behind the counter to input the books into the system, by the time I was done inputting over two-hundred books, I noticed it was already getting dark, I closed up the account for today, which was very easy after Mrs Pat’s surprisingly great teachings. I was about to log out of the system and switch it off when a boy barged in through the doors letting in a gust of wind, “Hi, I am s

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LOST

LOST ~~XAVIER~~ I returned very late last night, I had to spend as much time as I could with my family because we rarely get to spend much time together for a while now. I took the twins to the mall, bought some toys for them and some important things for myself, before taking the train back home. I have a class by 7am and I am already dressed and ready to go, I mean how dressed can I be other than a shirt and a jean trouser to complete the bad boy look. I don’t know how my department did it but I was added to a group chat with all my 'supposed' course mates. I left the room by 6:55 because the classes are walking distance from the house and I want to use the five minutes I have to look for where my class is being held, since I currently do not know my left from my right in this brand new wonderful school environment (spot the sarcasm) I could have sworn that I had passed this biochemistry block sign at least two times, yet I still couldn’t, find the damn LHA classroom, what did LH

  • Roommates with a Curfew   FREE DAY

FREE DAY~~XAVIER~~I went to the Dean’s office yesterday after I closed from work to take my class schedule, the secretary offered me the school map but I declined with a shake of my head. I was going to figure out the in’s and out’s of this school once I find the time, eventually. Wednesday’s are no class days for me, so I immediately call Mum to let her know. “Hi big bro, mama, Xav wants to speak with you !!!”, I heard my baby brother, Liam, loud voice, then I heard the pattering of his little feet on the ground as I’m guessing he was running to give my mum the phone. “Hi Xavi”, I heard the voice of my baby sister, Laura, calling my name in the background which put a huge smile on my face. The sound of shuffling welcomed me until I heard the sweet sound of my mother’s voice. “Hello baby, how are you doing, you didn’t send the video of your room like I asked you to, how is work? I hope you are doing okay”. I told her how things have been going for the past three days and about my ti
