~~DARKNESS~~

ALICIA

It has been about two weeks since Xavier and I spoke, the only thing that happens in this room is just us brushing past each other when we find either of us are in the room. I don’t know where he has been sleeping for the past how many days; all I know is he always comes back looking stressed. Sometimes I even feel a little pity for him until I relay the events surrounding my mug and I feel my spirit flare up all over again like the event just happened. Stepping into the house and meeting it empty doesn’t surprise me because that’s how I have been entering the house for the past two weeks. It’s Wednesday, my off day, I have been outside enjoying the school’s peaceful scenery, taking some pictures, and doing some videos to send to my mum later. I just want to take my bath and sleep; I stopped to get some food when I was on my way back from school. I take off my clothes and step into the bathroom, I’m enjoying the hot water dripping down my body when suddenly the light goes off, and I immediately feel a sense of dread wash over me. Suddenly, I hear the sound of the door to the room being opened; I immediately start shivering even though steaming hot water was just rolling down my body some seconds ago. Panic rises within me, fast and sharp, I step out of the shower and wrap myself in my big fluffy towel, heart pounding, hands shaking as I fumble for my phone.

“Xavier?” I call out, hating the tremor in my voice and praying silently for it to be him. He answers immediately “Yeah, I’m here. There is a power outage, just let me get a candle”.

~~XAVIER~~

On my way home, I could hear people talking that there might be a power outage today, since there is going to be a heavy storm coming, guess I have to get everything done on time then. I can’t believe I forgot to by a torchlight and batteries. Ten steps away from my house, I’m enveloped in sudden darkness, I quickly unlock the door and step inside, when, I hear a tiny voice calling my name from the bathroom, I guess she was having a shower when the light went off, I could hear the fear in her voice so I quickly find my duffle bag that I brought from home some weeks back to search for a touch I’m praying I put there. My hand comes in contact with candles- emergency ones mom told me to put in my bag that I forgot about. I’m sure she already knew I was going to forget it. I quickly grab a lighter and ignite the little wick of the candle.

The small flame flickers to life, softening the room, pushing shadows back just enough to breathe; I light another and walk towards the bathroom, I knock and after a few seconds, I hear the knob of the door turn and see her small hands peeking out from behind the door. She grabs it and shuts the door behind her; I quickly changed out of my clothes since I had already had my bath at work.

She steps out quietly already dressed and sits down opposite me on her bed. The silence deafening, awkward but not hostile. The next thing I hear is the sound of thunder, and then rain starts pounding on the roof. The air feels slightly intimate despite the distance.

~~ALICIA~~

I offer my gratitude and he just stares at me before nodding slowly. The next thing I knew we were talking- not about feelings, not about the past- but about trivial things. Music, food, which class feels pointless, etc. I laugh when he admits he hates early mornings but wakes up anyway because failure terrifies him more. The laughter surprises us both. When the light finally returns, neither of us move away from each other right away. We don’t acknowledge it but I’m sure he knows something has changed.

  • Roommates with a Curfew   THIRD PARTY

~~THIRD PARTY~~~~ALICIA~~Since the blackout, the past few days have been pretty chill, just small talks between me and Xavier, little passing comments that sometimes makes me laugh or just smile. The room has been a comfort zone for me for a while now, which is a lot compared to how things were at the beginning. I get up from my bed, pick up my bag and do one last take round the house to make sure that everything is in order, after feeling satisfied with what I was seeing, I headed out to the library. I greeted the security men at the school gate with a smile on my face and continued walking to the library. I am quickly welcomed by the smell of books and wood as I head to the staff room behind the counter to drop my belongings. I greet Mrs. Pat and began organizing everything that wasn’t in order, I clean the shelves, put the new books that just arrived on the shelf all the while listening to songs on my headphones. When I was done with everything, I went around the l

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LATE NIGHTS

~~LATE NIGHTS~~ ~~ALICIA~~ The rain starts out slowly. Not the aggressive kind that rattles windows, but the slow steady fall that sounds like fingers tapping gently against glass. Outside, the world feels far away- blurred by darkness and water. Inside the room, the candle remains lit, the little flame dancing weakly every time the wind slips through the cracks of the window frame. I sit cross-legged on my bed feeling shy all of a sudden with my arms wrapped loosely around my body. Xavier leans back against his mattress, seated on the ground, legs stretched out, hands clasped together as though he’s afraid to move them. The power is still out and honestly at this point, I’m not sure we have any hope of seeing light till tomorrow. Secretly, I don’t really want the light to come back now. Weirdly, the candle light softens everything. His sharp edges, his rigid

  • Roommates with a Curfew   MISTAKES

~~MISTAKES~~~~ALICIA~~I honestly don’t know how long this understanding with Xavier is going to last, [don’t get me wrong, I know what you guys must be thinking, “he hasn’t done anything wrong, why is this girl thinking so much”], because it takes a second to mess things that are already planned and currently I have trust issues that makes me question any and everything. I am on my way to work since all my classes for today have been cancelled, apparently one of our lecturer’s lost one of his family members, so all the lecturer’s in my faculty decided to pay his family a visit to pay their condolences. I clock in and greet Mrs Pat who was currently stacking books on the shelves, she smiles showing the age behind her pretty face with the wrinkles that line her eyes and blows me a kiss, I do a little display of catching the kiss and put it in my pockets, making both of us laugh. I head to the staff room and pick up my tag, drop my bag on the shelf and say a little praye

  • Roommates with a Curfew   WORK

WORK ~~ALICIA~~ Well, this class was a complete waste of time, because tell me why the lecturer kept reading a textbook for us, a textbook that we have to buy to pass the course. I guess I’m never attending this class again then, I stepped out of the class and headed straight to work at the library. I greeted Mrs Pat [she insisted I call her that], headed to the back office, dropped my bag on the shelf and pinned my tag on my shirt. Heading to the new books that arrived today, I went to sack them in their respective shelves, ranging from horror to education, to all sorts of topics. When I was done I went behind the counter to input the books into the system, by the time I was done inputting over two-hundred books, I noticed it was already getting dark, I closed up the account for today, which was very easy after Mrs Pat’s surprisingly great teachings. I was about to log out of the system and switch it off when a boy barged in through the doors letting in a gust of wind, “Hi, I am s

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LOST

LOST ~~XAVIER~~ I returned very late last night, I had to spend as much time as I could with my family because we rarely get to spend much time together for a while now. I took the twins to the mall, bought some toys for them and some important things for myself, before taking the train back home. I have a class by 7am and I am already dressed and ready to go, I mean how dressed can I be other than a shirt and a jean trouser to complete the bad boy look. I don’t know how my department did it but I was added to a group chat with all my 'supposed' course mates. I left the room by 6:55 because the classes are walking distance from the house and I want to use the five minutes I have to look for where my class is being held, since I currently do not know my left from my right in this brand new wonderful school environment (spot the sarcasm) I could have sworn that I had passed this biochemistry block sign at least two times, yet I still couldn’t, find the damn LHA classroom, what did LH
