~~MISTAKES~~

~~ALICIA~~

I honestly don’t know how long this understanding with Xavier is going to last, [don’t get me wrong, I know what you guys must be thinking, “he hasn’t done anything wrong, why is this girl thinking so much”], because it takes a second to mess things that are already planned and currently I have trust issues that makes me question any and everything. I am on my way to work since all my classes for today have been cancelled, apparently one of our lecturer’s lost one of his family members, so all the lecturer’s in my faculty decided to pay his family a visit to pay their condolences. I clock in and greet Mrs Pat who was currently stacking books on the shelves, she smiles showing the age behind her pretty face with the wrinkles that line her eyes and blows me a kiss, I do a little display of catching the kiss and put it in my pockets, making both of us laugh. I head to the staff room and pick up my tag, drop my bag on the shelf and say a little prayer before I socialise with people for the day.

“Phew”, today was busy as hell, it seems everybody in my faculty wanted to use their day to read, because tell me why more than a hundred people who I attended to where from my faculty, that is, Faculty of Social Sciences. My shoulders are so sore; I just want to go home, drink hot chamomile tea in my favourite mug and rest. I lock up the library and skip happily on my way home while listening to my most played playlist on Spotify.

I step into the house exhausted, just wanting to soak up the warmth from my sheets while sipping my tea. I go straight to the cupboard and see all the other mugs in this house but that one; my favourite chipped mug, with a faint crack along the handle. I close it and open it again like its magically going to appear. Panic flares up inside me, I can’t lose that mug, it’s among one of the things I use to always remember the little moments I spent with my Dad. Annoyance starts to creep in slowly; I step out from the room to ask Xavier, only to find him sipping something from the said mug.

~~XAVIER~~

I heard a weird sound of shock from the kitchen’s doorway; I looked up to see her looking at me like I was using her favourite mug or something, I quickly scan the mug and see it, the faint crack and the obvious use of the mug. “Oh shit”, why didn’t I notice this before, it literally looks like I used it while knowing its importance to her, time to put on my nonchalant act to avoid dealing with this situation . “That’s mine”, she said flatly. I look down, and then back up, “You have a lot of mugs”. “That one is not for communal use”, she says raising an eyebrow. I let her know she didn’t specify about the mugs to use and the one not to. The next reaction was not one I could have predicted, because to put it simply, she exploded.

Her face is red with rage as she rants about how I cannot respect basic rules or pay attention to her talks on boundaries, a list of grievances spills out on respect. She doesn’t speak loudly but rather sharply, with precision. I fire back at her defensively, “How was I supposed to know you had an emotional attachment to a freaking mug? Sorry I didn’t call you to ask for your permission before I used the mug, I don’t know how you want us to co-exist when you keep treating the room like a museum, everything must be done and kept your way or not at all. This is supposed to be a shared space but you took matters into your hands and made me live with it”, by the time I was done, I was already heaving angrily. I expected her to say something else but she just turned away from me, went to the bathroom, came out some minutes after and hopped into bed, with her back facing me.

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LATE NIGHTS

~~LATE NIGHTS~~ ~~ALICIA~~ The rain starts out slowly. Not the aggressive kind that rattles windows, but the slow steady fall that sounds like fingers tapping gently against glass. Outside, the world feels far away- blurred by darkness and water. Inside the room, the candle remains lit, the little flame dancing weakly every time the wind slips through the cracks of the window frame. I sit cross-legged on my bed feeling shy all of a sudden with my arms wrapped loosely around my body. Xavier leans back against his mattress, seated on the ground, legs stretched out, hands clasped together as though he’s afraid to move them. The power is still out and honestly at this point, I’m not sure we have any hope of seeing light till tomorrow. Secretly, I don’t really want the light to come back now. Weirdly, the candle light softens everything. His sharp edges, his rigid

  • Roommates with a Curfew   DARKNESS

~~DARKNESS~~ ALICIA It has been about two weeks since Xavier and I spoke, the only thing that happens in this room is just us brushing past each other when we find either of us are in the room. I don’t know where he has been sleeping for the past how many days; all I know is he always comes back looking stressed. Sometimes I even feel a little pity for him until I relay the events surrounding my mug and I feel my spirit flare up all over again like the event just happened. Stepping into the house and meeting it empty doesn’t surprise me because that’s how I have been entering the house for the past two weeks. It’s Wednesday, my off day, I have been outside enjoying the school’s peaceful scenery, taking some pictures, and doing some videos to send to my mum later. I just want to take my bath and sleep; I stopped to get some food when I was on my way back from school. I take off my clothes and step into the bathroom, I’m

  • Roommates with a Curfew   WORK

WORK ~~ALICIA~~ Well, this class was a complete waste of time, because tell me why the lecturer kept reading a textbook for us, a textbook that we have to buy to pass the course. I guess I’m never attending this class again then, I stepped out of the class and headed straight to work at the library. I greeted Mrs Pat [she insisted I call her that], headed to the back office, dropped my bag on the shelf and pinned my tag on my shirt. Heading to the new books that arrived today, I went to sack them in their respective shelves, ranging from horror to education, to all sorts of topics. When I was done I went behind the counter to input the books into the system, by the time I was done inputting over two-hundred books, I noticed it was already getting dark, I closed up the account for today, which was very easy after Mrs Pat’s surprisingly great teachings. I was about to log out of the system and switch it off when a boy barged in through the doors letting in a gust of wind, “Hi, I am s

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LOST

LOST ~~XAVIER~~ I returned very late last night, I had to spend as much time as I could with my family because we rarely get to spend much time together for a while now. I took the twins to the mall, bought some toys for them and some important things for myself, before taking the train back home. I have a class by 7am and I am already dressed and ready to go, I mean how dressed can I be other than a shirt and a jean trouser to complete the bad boy look. I don’t know how my department did it but I was added to a group chat with all my 'supposed' course mates. I left the room by 6:55 because the classes are walking distance from the house and I want to use the five minutes I have to look for where my class is being held, since I currently do not know my left from my right in this brand new wonderful school environment (spot the sarcasm) I could have sworn that I had passed this biochemistry block sign at least two times, yet I still couldn’t, find the damn LHA classroom, what did LH

  • Roommates with a Curfew   FREE DAY

FREE DAY~~XAVIER~~I went to the Dean’s office yesterday after I closed from work to take my class schedule, the secretary offered me the school map but I declined with a shake of my head. I was going to figure out the in’s and out’s of this school once I find the time, eventually. Wednesday’s are no class days for me, so I immediately call Mum to let her know. “Hi big bro, mama, Xav wants to speak with you !!!”, I heard my baby brother, Liam, loud voice, then I heard the pattering of his little feet on the ground as I’m guessing he was running to give my mum the phone. “Hi Xavi”, I heard the voice of my baby sister, Laura, calling my name in the background which put a huge smile on my face. The sound of shuffling welcomed me until I heard the sweet sound of my mother’s voice. “Hello baby, how are you doing, you didn’t send the video of your room like I asked you to, how is work? I hope you are doing okay”. I told her how things have been going for the past three days and about my ti
