FREE DAY

~~XAVIER~~

I went to the Dean’s office yesterday after I closed from work to take my class schedule, the secretary offered me the school map but I declined with a shake of my head. I was going to figure out the in’s and out’s of this school once I find the time, eventually. Wednesday’s are no class days for me, so I immediately call Mum to let her know. “Hi big bro, mama, Xav wants to speak with you !!!”, I heard my baby brother, Liam, loud voice, then I heard the pattering of his little feet on the ground as I’m guessing he was running to give my mum the phone. “Hi Xavi”, I heard the voice of my baby sister, Laura, calling my name in the background which put a huge smile on my face. The sound of shuffling welcomed me until I heard the sweet sound of my mother’s voice. “Hello baby, how are you doing, you didn’t send the video of your room like I asked you to, how is work? I hope you are doing okay”. I told her how things have been going for the past three days and about my tiny little roommate, I noticed the change in her breathing and the excitement in her tone the moment she heard me talk about a girl and I heard her whispering to David [ the father of the twins], haven’t gotten used to calling him Dad. She threw questions at me from all angles, questions that I didn’t even know how to answer or where to start from, so I just told her we would talk about it when I got home tomorrow. I gave my kisses to the little twins and said a heart-warming goodbye to mum and David, before ending the call and heading home.

I woke up by 5am, prayed, stepped into the bathroom, did my business, packed a day bag, and sat back down on my bed while chewing on a snack bar, careful not to make any noise. I really need to go shopping for food items, I have literally nothing to eat in this house and I need to put that kitchen and the skills my mother taught me to use. Reclining on my pillow, I scrolled through all the things I had to do today on my phone’s checklist, I had to go shopping with the twins and get them some supplies and get my own supplies too for school, spend time with everybody and enjoy this pre-winter season before the cold comes, greet my boss and return before 9pm to get some sleep before my classes on Thursday. Immediately my 7am alarm rang, I laid my bed the way my mum taught me as a child, picked my duffle bag from the ground, wore my black leather jacket -the best and most heart-warming gift I have gotten from my mum apart from the twins and stepped out of the house closing the door silently behind me.

~~ALICIA~~

Woke up by eight in the morning since today is, my free day, I could afford the luxury of sleeping in. I guess my roommate has gone out, well I needed to get a head start for the day ahead, because I had to buy supplies for the house and some stationaries to make it into the perfect little space for me and Luca [ a teddy bear Dad got me as a child], find a job[since the school trust fund Dad left me isn’t going to last forever], then lastly, I needed to use the map to find out where my classrooms are located ahead of time for my classes tomorrow, Thursday. Hopped into the shower, wore one of my comfortable sweatpants and headed out to the mall. I picked out some notepads, sketchpad, all kinds of stationaries, mirror for the bathroom, two cute mint green curtains for the room to give it a homey feel, not because I didn’t like to sleep with the sun shining in my freaking eyes [cough cough]. I got all the best kind of cereals, milk and some other food items since I liked cooking a lot, I bought pots, a pan, a cute little kettle and my toiletries. After paying, I headed home and unloaded everything into their respective places neatly. By the time I was done with everything I took pics of the room to send to Mum, I gave myself a huge pat on the back since I had done a great job, the room looked so homey and warm.

I headed out with my school map into campus and walked round everywhere, memorising the path to all the places I needed to be. I headed to the library to check it out; little fact about me is that I love reading about anything in general. On getting there I noticed the sign that stated “WORKER NEEDED”, I quickly entered and walked straight to the kind looking old lady behind the counter, who looked up and smiled as she heard me approaching her. “Good afternoon Ma, I would like to apply for the job I saw available at the sign outside”. She immediately signalled me to come behind the counter, introduced herself to me as Mrs Patricia, and offered me a seat. “We don’t see youngsters like you nowadays dearie, the job is simple, you just have to be behind the counter recording the books rented and organise the shelves. This job gives you extra credit in classes and pays very well too”. I filled the form she gave me immediately and she gave me a tour of the whole place, the library is so grand with shelves taller than me reaching up to the elegant wooden ceiling, windows lining up every part of the walls giving it a bright yet homey feel, the bright brown polish of the wood left me in awe, the scent of old books welcoming me home to the place I love being and the silence of the place this whole day worthwhile.

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LATE NIGHTS

~~LATE NIGHTS~~ ~~ALICIA~~ The rain starts out slowly. Not the aggressive kind that rattles windows, but the slow steady fall that sounds like fingers tapping gently against glass. Outside, the world feels far away- blurred by darkness and water. Inside the room, the candle remains lit, the little flame dancing weakly every time the wind slips through the cracks of the window frame. I sit cross-legged on my bed feeling shy all of a sudden with my arms wrapped loosely around my body. Xavier leans back against his mattress, seated on the ground, legs stretched out, hands clasped together as though he’s afraid to move them. The power is still out and honestly at this point, I’m not sure we have any hope of seeing light till tomorrow. Secretly, I don’t really want the light to come back now. Weirdly, the candle light softens everything. His sharp edges, his rigid

  • Roommates with a Curfew   DARKNESS

~~DARKNESS~~ ALICIA It has been about two weeks since Xavier and I spoke, the only thing that happens in this room is just us brushing past each other when we find either of us are in the room. I don’t know where he has been sleeping for the past how many days; all I know is he always comes back looking stressed. Sometimes I even feel a little pity for him until I relay the events surrounding my mug and I feel my spirit flare up all over again like the event just happened. Stepping into the house and meeting it empty doesn’t surprise me because that’s how I have been entering the house for the past two weeks. It’s Wednesday, my off day, I have been outside enjoying the school’s peaceful scenery, taking some pictures, and doing some videos to send to my mum later. I just want to take my bath and sleep; I stopped to get some food when I was on my way back from school. I take off my clothes and step into the bathroom, I’m

  • Roommates with a Curfew   MISTAKES

~~MISTAKES~~~~ALICIA~~I honestly don’t know how long this understanding with Xavier is going to last, [don’t get me wrong, I know what you guys must be thinking, “he hasn’t done anything wrong, why is this girl thinking so much”], because it takes a second to mess things that are already planned and currently I have trust issues that makes me question any and everything. I am on my way to work since all my classes for today have been cancelled, apparently one of our lecturer’s lost one of his family members, so all the lecturer’s in my faculty decided to pay his family a visit to pay their condolences. I clock in and greet Mrs Pat who was currently stacking books on the shelves, she smiles showing the age behind her pretty face with the wrinkles that line her eyes and blows me a kiss, I do a little display of catching the kiss and put it in my pockets, making both of us laugh. I head to the staff room and pick up my tag, drop my bag on the shelf and say a little praye

  • Roommates with a Curfew   WORK

WORK ~~ALICIA~~ Well, this class was a complete waste of time, because tell me why the lecturer kept reading a textbook for us, a textbook that we have to buy to pass the course. I guess I’m never attending this class again then, I stepped out of the class and headed straight to work at the library. I greeted Mrs Pat [she insisted I call her that], headed to the back office, dropped my bag on the shelf and pinned my tag on my shirt. Heading to the new books that arrived today, I went to sack them in their respective shelves, ranging from horror to education, to all sorts of topics. When I was done I went behind the counter to input the books into the system, by the time I was done inputting over two-hundred books, I noticed it was already getting dark, I closed up the account for today, which was very easy after Mrs Pat’s surprisingly great teachings. I was about to log out of the system and switch it off when a boy barged in through the doors letting in a gust of wind, “Hi, I am s

  • Roommates with a Curfew   LOST

LOST ~~XAVIER~~ I returned very late last night, I had to spend as much time as I could with my family because we rarely get to spend much time together for a while now. I took the twins to the mall, bought some toys for them and some important things for myself, before taking the train back home. I have a class by 7am and I am already dressed and ready to go, I mean how dressed can I be other than a shirt and a jean trouser to complete the bad boy look. I don’t know how my department did it but I was added to a group chat with all my 'supposed' course mates. I left the room by 6:55 because the classes are walking distance from the house and I want to use the five minutes I have to look for where my class is being held, since I currently do not know my left from my right in this brand new wonderful school environment (spot the sarcasm) I could have sworn that I had passed this biochemistry block sign at least two times, yet I still couldn’t, find the damn LHA classroom, what did LH
