CHAPTER ONE

Sorrow crept in as Luna gazed around the empty room, the silence was deafening. Her eyes locked onto the clock as the hours ticked by, each one reminding her that she was alone in her marriage.

Just as she thought the night couldn't get any worse, she heard the sound of the door opening.

Her heart skipped a beat as her husband walked in, his eyes scanned the room, taking in the candlelit table, the flowers and the anniversary cake.

For a moment, he just stood there, his expression unreadable. Then, his face twisted into a mixture of annoyance and irritation.

“Luna, what's all this?” he asked gruffly, his question like a slap in her face.

She walked over to him and hugged him. It felt like she was hugging a tree because he didn't hug her back, he just stood there with discomfort on his face.

“Have you forgotten what day it is?” She asked, looking up at him as she let go.

He let out a sharp, teeth-clenched hiss—an action he did whenever he was annoyed. A small frown crept up her face as he turned to leave.

Her sadness gave way to anger as she saw he was about to leave. She darted to the door and blocked his path.

“I went through the trouble of setting all this up for us to have a special night and now you want to leave?” Her voice cracked as she stood at the doorway, tears stinging at the corner of her eyes.

He didn't answer and it only made her more angry.

“ What's wrong with you? Why are you treating me like this?!” She screamed in her husband's face, the tears she'd been holding back streamed down her cheeks ruining her makeup.

She took in fierce breaths, as her heart thumped painfully in her chest.

Her husband's glare intensified as his jaw clenched in anger, the tension in the atmosphere becoming palpable.

“Get out of my way Luna,” he said through gritted teeth as his patience ran thin. She inched closer, placing her hands on his cheeks.

The next thing she knew, he gripped her jaw and pinned her against the wall. Pain shot through her head as her skull hit the wall.

“Get your hands off me,” he seethed, glaring at her murderously. His hot breath washed over her face as she shook with fear.

Her lips quivered, tears welling up in her eyes. He pushed her face away, slamming the door behind him as he left the room.

Her heart pounded as she slowly sank to the floor, her hands clenched the dress at her chest as her body became tense.

Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably, a loud wail coming out of her.

A while later, she looked up, her gaze falling upon the candlelit room she'd so carefully prepared. The scent of roses that wafted the air, the soft illuminating glow of the candles and the ambient music that played only made the evening's failure more bitter.

It'd been a year since they got married and that night was their first wedding anniversary. She'd hoped her husband would spend their anniversary night with her since it was a special one but it looked like he didn't care.

She got up and cleaned her face, her makeup smeared all over her palms. Casting one last glance at the decorated room, she left to go call the maid to assist her in cleaning it up.

As she descended the stairs, Luna felt the weight of their failed anniversary, her thoughts drifting to the memories of how it all began.

She was once a maid in the same house and her master; Mr. Richard Garrett–a billionaire in real estate, had just given up the ghost.

The day the will was to be read had finally arrived, little did she know it would change her life forever.

As the executor's voice filled the room, Luna's gaze drifted to the familiar faces of Mr. Richard's family.

“To my dearest maid, Luna Chavez, who has been so humble and kind, I leave seventy percent of my properties and assets…..”, The room fell silent as if time itself had stopped. Then the gasps and whispers erupted.

Luna's eyes widened, her mind reeling in shock. “....on the condition that she gets married within the next year”. The room exploded into chaos as he concluded.

She stood fixated on the spot with lots of questions on her mind as her face burned with shock and embarrassment. Why would Mr. Richard transfer most of his assets to her? He had two sons, why didn't he share it equally amongst them? Why her?

As Luna reached the last step, the maid's soft voice broke into her thoughts.

“Ma'am?” Luna turned, her eyes focusing on the maid's concerned face.

“Yes, Maria?”

“Shall I clean up the room? The one you prepared for…..” Maria's voice trailed off. Luna nodded, her mind snapping back to the present.

“Yes. Please see to it, I'm going to bed now”.

Maria nodded and trailed behind her as she went back up the stairs, heading to her room.

–––––

Although she went to bed quite early, Luna couldn't sleep. She kept tossing back and forth on her bed, and when she couldn't take it anymore, she decided to take a walk around the house to cool her head off.

Luna didn't sleep in the same room with her husband that night, he'd gone to sleep in one of the guest rooms.

As she got out of her room and headed towards the stairs, she heard a noise coming from one of the guest rooms. She turned and walked slowly to where the noise was coming from, with each step she took she could hear it more clearly.

She could hear moans and grunts.

As she got closer to where the sound was coming from, her heart raced. She pinned her ear on the room's door, trying to make sense of what was going on.

An ugly feeling rose inside her as she hoped it wasn't the room her husband was sleeping in. Moans of pleasure reached her ear followed by the unmistakable sounds of the bed creaking.

Suddenly, her mouth felt dry and her breathing became hitched.

Questions kept erupting in her mind with each second that passed. She gripped the door knob and was about to open it to confirm her suspicions when a feminine voice spoke up and she froze on the spot.

“George…. stop…”

CHAPTER THREE
“W-What are you doing here?” She scoffed, yanking her arm from his grip. “Here to laugh at my misery?” She hiccuped, the alcohol already taking a toll on her.“Laugh?” He chuckled lightly. “Why would I laugh at you?” He sat down on the stool next to hers, resting his chin on his hand as he placed it on the counter. “I'm just wondering, what brings a beautiful woman like you to a joint like this?” Luna threw her head back and downed the tequila shot as soon as the bartender poured some into her glass, letting out a small gasp as the liquid burned her throat. She turned to the man and gazed at him through blurry eyes.“Just trying to forget,” she slurred as the words ran out together. “Forget what?” He asked, his deep voice low and soothing.Luna shrugged, her shoulders barely moving. “Everything…what you did.”The man raised a brow as he jerked his head up. “What did I do?” Luna's eyes narrowed, her vision still blurry. “You know exactly what I'm talking about,” she spat out.His

As she sat up, a wave of nausea washed over her and she rushed to the bathroom where her body expelled its contents into the toilet. The pain in her head intensified, and she felt like she was going to pass out. Finally emerging from the bathroom, she stopped in her tracks. “What the…” Her brows furrowed in confusion as she was greeted by an unfamiliar room. Grogginess clouded her mind as she tried to recall how she ended up there and the events of the previous night. As she took in her surroundings, a glimpse of something caught her eye.On the edge of the bed, closest to where she woke up, she saw a faint bloody stain and her heart sank. She looked down at herself and saw that she was wearing a short T-shirt that barely covered her thighs. She felt a spike of panic as she tried to piece together the fragments of the previous night—obscure memories of the bar, tequila shots blurring her vision and th

CHAPTER FIVE
FOUR YEARS LATER “And the CEO of the Year award goes to…!” With a mischievous glint in his eyes, the presenter savoured the moment, building the tension as he scanned the crowd’s expectant faces. He relished the fact that he held the power to make someone's night unforgettable. As the spotlight danced across the sea of faces, he lifted his arms and her name soared through the air, shattering the silence.“Luna Chavez!!” Her eyes widened as her name hung in the air, her mind struggling to process what she'd heard. The room fell silent, heads turning in her direction as the spotlight stayed fixed on her. “Luna, he called your name.” She turned to face her, still frozen in disbelief. Sophia slightly jabbed her ribs, making Luna slowly stand to her feet, her legs trembling beneath her dress. She took a step forward, her eyes fixed on the stage. “Miss. Luna, we don't have all day please.” The presenter beckoned to her and she quickened her steps with a nervous smile appearing on her fa

CHAPTER SIX
Luna stood up, smoothing her jacket as she extended a hand across the polished mahogany table. “Thank you, gentlemen, for placing your trust in our company. We won't disappoint you.” The clients, impressed by her confidence and presentation, shook her hand, exchanging pleasantries. As they left, Luna felt a sense of relief and satisfaction wash over her. Another successful deal closed.Sophia, who'd been quietly observing from a corner of the room, approached her. “Your skills never cease to amaze me, Luna.” Luna gave her a warm smile, tucking a stray strand of dark brown hair behind her ear. “Thanks, Sophia.” “So, uhh…I was thinking….you know with everything we've been juggling lately, I think we deserve a quick break.” She said nervously, fidgeting with her red silk dress. Luna raised a brow, wondering what she was hinting at.“A quick break?” Sophia nodded.“Yeah, a quick break and I was thinking we should go shopping…like today…right now.” Luna scoffed, shaking her head.” You

CHAPTER SEVEN
Luna rose from her chair slowly, her eyes widening in shock. “G-George?” she whispered in disbelief, unable to believe her eyes. George stood before her, still looking dashing as ever, with his almost perfectly chiselled features. A charming smile played on his lips as his piercing grey eyes held her gaze, boring into her soul. He wore a tailored black suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and his stylishly dark messy hair. His hands were in his pockets, making his stance exude sheer confidence. He took a step forward, his eyes still locked on Luna's, but stopped abruptly when she raised her hand. Her palm faced him, a clear warning to keep his distance. Luna's jaw tightened, her words forced out between clenched teeth, “What are you doing here?” she took in fierce breaths, her heart pounding heavily against her chest with each second that passed. George's gaze softened, letting out a small sigh. “Luna, I know you're furious right now but I need to talk to you.” “There's no

CHAPTER EIGHT
“Do we have any leads on the person who did this?” She turned to Sophia and Marcus, her gaze pleading for answers. “Anything. A name, a face?”Sophia hesitated, sympathy written all over her face. “We’re still investigating, Luna.” Marcus added, his voice firm. “We’ll get to the bottom of this, Luna. I promise. But we need your help. Can you think of anyone who would do such a thing?” Luna's eyes darted between Sophia and Marcus, her mind racing. How was she supposed to know? She had so many business rivals. Sure, some of them had threatened her but she never thought any of them would actually go through with it. “How did this happen in the first place? We conduct a mandatory weekly check-up on all our properties, so how could this have possibly happened?” Sophia and Marcus glanced nervously at each other, fidgeting on the spot.Luna's eyes narrowed as she studied them. They were hiding something from her. “What's going on? What aren't you guys telling me?” Sophia bit her lip, tak

CHAPTER NINE
“So you believe in zodiac signs too huh?” His eyebrows raised in surprise as he looked at her in astonishment.“Well, yes I do.” “And horoscopes?” His lips twitched slightly, narrowing his eyes in disbelief. “Yeah, but like….I don't let it entirely rule my life,” Luna pointed out matter-of-factly. Jayden nodded, chuckling lightly as he sipped his espresso.Luna brought her coffee cup to her lips, the hot liquid burning her tongue. Her gaze lingered on Jayden, taking in his features. His eyes fluttered closed as the rich aroma filled his senses, savouring the warmth. A stray lock of brown hair fell over his forehead, casting a small shadow as it fell over his eyes. A small sigh of contentment escaped his lips as he threw his head back slightly and his sharp jawline relaxed, softening his rugged features for a moment. “It's been nice talking to you, Jayden. It feels good to just take a break from work and just have a cup of coffee with someone.” Luna said, smiling at him. A small fr

CHAPTER TEN
Luna stared at the stranger in the mirror, her eyes widening in disbelief. Sophia chuckled as she tightened the braids in Luna's hair. “Soph? Who is this person?” Luna asked, her voice laced with astonishment. She laughed. “It’s you, silly! You look gorgeous.” Luna's gaze stayed fixed on her reflection, taking in the elegant dress, the subtle yet noticeable makeup, and the intricate braids that framed her face. She looked polished, refined and…utterly unrecognisable. She reached out a tentative hand to touch her reflection as if to confirm that it was her. Sophia handed her a pair of earrings, which Luna put on, still in a daze as she stared at her reflection.“Wow, Sophia, I don't can't even recognize my face,” Luna replied excitedly but a little scared.Beaming with pride, she replied elatedly. “That’s the point! I must say, I did a pretty neat job. Maybe I should become a make-up artist.” Luna’s eyes met hers in the mirror, her left brow raised. “Really?” Sophia laughed, nudging
