THE ROSSI ESTATE

last update Veröffentlichungsdatum: 08.08.2026 14:42:01

The gates of the old Rossi estate creak open slowly, rust groaning against rust, like the house itself has been holding its breath for ten years and only now remembers how to exhale.

Elena sits frozen in the passenger seat, staring up the long gravel drive at the mansion beyond — pale stone, ivy climbing one whole side, windows dark and empty like closed eyes.

"We don't have to do this today," Dante says gently, watching her instead of the house.

"No." Elena's hand tightens on the door handle. "I need to see it.

Sofia said Victor never sold it. Just locked it up and let it sit here, untouched, for ten years."

"Why would he keep it?"

"I don't know." She finally pulls her eyes away from the windows to look at him.

"Maybe he wanted a piece of my father he could control, even after he was gone.

Maybe he just didn't want anyone else finding whatever's still inside."

Marco pulls the car to a stop at the top of the drive, and for a long moment, nobody moves.

"I'll wait out here with Gabriel," Marco says quietly. "Take whatever time you need."

Elena nods, and Dante is out of the car first, coming around to open her door, offering his hand.........

She takes it, and together they walk up the wide stone steps to a front door that hasn't opened in a decade........

The key Sofia gave her is heavy and cold in her palm. It takes two tries for the old lock to give.

Inside, the air smells like dust and old wood, sunlight cutting thin gray lines through gaps in the curtains.......

Furniture sits draped in white sheets like ghosts standing frozen mid-conversation.

Elena steps carefully across the marble floor, her footsteps echoing in the silence.

"It's smaller than I imagined," she says softly.

"You remember it, then? Even a little?"

"No." She shakes her head slowly, running her fingers along the edge of a covered armchair. "I just always pictured it bigger.......

Grander. Whatever Victor told me about my family, he made it sound like we came from nothing important. I think I built this place up in my head as something modest, forgettable."

Her voice catches. "It's not modest at all."

"Your father built a good life here," Dante says quietly, following behind her.

"For you. For your mother, before she passed. This house was full of noise once. Music. Laughter.

I remember it from the outside, from parties we were both dragged to as kids."

"I wish I could hear any of it." Elena pulls the sheet off a grand piano in the corner of the room, dust rising in the sunlight.

Her fingers hover over the keys without pressing down. "Did I play?"

"Terribly," Dante says, a small smile breaking through.

"You used to joke that you only kept at it because it annoyed Victor, who insisted every proper Rossi should be musical."

A surprised laugh escapes her. "That does sound like something I'd do out of spite."

"You had a talent for spite," Dante says warmly. "It was one of my favorite things about you."

They move room to room slowly, Elena pausing at photographs still hanging crooked on the walls — herself as a child, a woman who must be her mother, her father laughing at something just out of frame.

Each one lands like a small, aching gift, pieces of a life she's only now being allowed to see.

"I don't remember any of these moments," she admits, standing in front of a photo of herself at maybe seven years old, missing a front tooth, grinning at the camera like the whole world belonged to her.

"But I'm glad they happened. Even if I can't reach them anymore."

"Maybe you will. Someday." Dante's hand finds the small of her back. "Or maybe you won't, and that has to be okay too.

The memories being gone doesn't erase that they happened, Elena. This house is proof of that, even without your mind agreeing to remember it."

They find the study last, tucked behind a set of heavy double doors at the end of the hall.

Unlike the rest of the house, this room isn't draped in sheets — it looks disturbed, drawers left slightly open, papers shoved carelessly back onto shelves.

"Someone's been in here," Elena says, tension sharpening her voice instantly. "Recently, by the look of it."

Dante's whole posture changes, alert now, scanning the room before stepping fully inside. "Stay by the door."

"Dante—"

"Just for a second. Let me check."

He moves through the room carefully, checking behind the door, behind the heavy curtains, before finally relaxing slightly and waving her in. "Clear. But you're right.

Someone's definitely searched this room. Recently."

Elena steps inside, unease crawling up her spine as she takes in the disturbed drawers, the papers out of place. "Victor, maybe? Before his arrest?"

"Maybe." Dante frowns, crouching down to examine a drawer pulled almost all the way out. "Or Adrian.

If he knew this house existed, knew it might hold something useful—"

"Like what?"

"I don't know yet." Dante straightens, scanning the room again with new purpose.

"But whoever it was, they were looking for something specific. This wasn't random."

Elena moves to the large oak desk in the center of the room, running her hand along its surface, memory tugging faintly at the edges of her mind without ever quite arriving.

She pulls open the largest drawer, finds it mostly empty, save for a single leather-bound journal shoved into the very back corner, half-hidden beneath the wood paneling.

"Dante."

He's beside her instantly. "What did you find?"

She lifts the journal out carefully, hands trembling slightly.

The leather is worn soft with age, her father's initials embossed faintly on the cover — M.R.

"It's his," she breathes. "It's my father's."

She opens it slowly, and the handwriting inside is careful, precise, dated entries stretching back years.

Dante leans over her shoulder, both of them scanning the pages in the fading afternoon light.

"This is a ledger," Dante murmurs. "Financial notes. Dates. Names."

"Victor's name," Elena says, voice tightening as her eyes catch on a passage near the back, the ink slightly smudged like it was written in a hurry. "Look. Right here."

She reads aloud, voice unsteady. "Victor is hiding money through the foundation. I have proof now.

I don't know who to trust with this yet, but I cannot stay silent. If anything happens to me, look here first."

The room goes very quiet.

"This is dated a week before he died," Dante says slowly.

"He knew." Elena's hands shake around the journal.

"He knew Victor was dangerous, and he was already building a case against him.

This is exactly what Sofia found in the foundation records ten years later, practically down to the same numbers."

"Which means whoever searched this study was probably looking for this exact book."

Dante's jaw tightens.

"And they didn't find it, because it was hidden further back than they bothered to check."

"If Adrian's people had found this—"

"They didn't." Dante takes her hand gently, steadying her. "You found it first. That matters."

Elena holds the journal against her chest, ten years of grief and confusion finally starting to shift into something with real shape, real evidence, real weight.

"This proves Victor's guilt goes back even further than we knew. This could matter for the trial. For everything."

"Then we bring it straight to Marco." Dante glances around the disturbed study one more time, uneasy.

"And we make sure nobody else gets close enough to this house to look for anything else."

Elena nods, tucking the journal carefully into her bag, her heart pounding with a strange mixture of grief and fierce, unexpected pride.

"He tried to stop this," she says quietly, looking back at the desk where her father once sat, planning, worrying, trying to protect a life Victor eventually destroyed anyway.

"Even before he knew what it would cost him. He tried."

"He did." Dante wraps an arm around her shoulders, guiding her gently back toward the door.

"And now you're finishing what he started. I don't think there's a better way to honor him than that."

They leave the estate as the sun starts to dip low behind the trees, the old house settling back into its long silence behind them, one secret lighter than it was that morning, and one step closer to the truth still waiting to be fully uncovered.
