POV: Karol Kensington
I needed someone. I needed just one person in this building to be on my side. I needed someone to tell me this was a bad dream; I couldn't think of anyone, but I have a sister.
I rushed down the quiet hallway and pushed open the door to my younger sister’s home office.
"Valeria," I choked out, tears finally burning my eyes. "Valeria, please."
Valeria was standing behind her desk. She wore a soft cream dress, and her warm blonde hair was perfectly styled. But she was not doing paperwork.
She was holding a roll of brown packing tape.
Around her feet were three large cardboard boxes. I looked closer and it felt felt familiar.
"Karol," Valeria said. Her voice was sweet and soft, like honey. She put the tape down and walked over to me. She wrapped her small arms around my waist. "Oh, sweetie. You are shaking. What is wrong?"
"Mother faked my signature," I cried, hugging her back tightly. I buried my face in her shoulder. "She signed Ciro's contract for me. She is forcing me to go to his island. Val, she threatened to take away my doctor's license if I don't."
Valeria gently rubbed my back. "Shh. I know, Karol. I know. It is so awful."
I pulled back and looked at her face. "You knew? You knew she did this?"
Valeria gave me a sad, pitying look. "Mother told me last night. She said it was the only way to save the clinic. Ciro was going to destroy us, Karol. You have to admit, you made him very angry when you ripped up his first deal."
I stared at her. The tears in my eyes dried up instantly.
"I made him angry?" I asked. My voice dropped to a whisper. "Valeria, he is blackmailing us. He is holding us hostage."
"And now you can fix it," Valeria said smoothly. She turned away from me and walked back to the cardboard boxes. She picked up the packing tape. Riiip. The loud sound of the tape closing a box echoed in the room. "You just have to stay at his island for a while. It will be like a vacation. I will take care of everything here while you are gone."
I looked at her desk. My gold nameplate, the one that said Chief Medical Director was sitting on it.
"You are packing my stuff,"
"Mother told me to," Valeria answered. She did not look up. She kept taping the boxes. "We need to clear your space so I can move in. Someone has to be the new Chief Director while you are away. It is just temporary, Karol. For the family."
She was so calm. She was not angry at our mother. She was not worried about me going to live with a dangerous man. She was just excited to take my job.
Hector’s scared voice echoed in my head. It was your sister. Valeria. She erased the computer files.
I took a slow step toward her desk. "You are very happy about this, aren't you, Val?"
"I am just trying to be strong for us," Valeria sighed, finally looking at me with her big, innocent brown eyes. "Someone has to keep this business running."
While she was looking at me, my eyes dropped to her messy desk. Underneath a pile of patient files, the edge of a crisp white paper was sticking out.
It had a bright red logo at the top. It was a bank logo. But it was not our local bank in Medellín. It was a bank in the Cayman Islands. An offshore account.
I leaned forward and pulled the paper out.
"Don't touch my things!" Valeria snapped. Her sweet voice vanished.
But I had already seen it.
The paper was a monthly bank statement. The name at the top was Valeria Kensington. And the numbers at the bottom were printed in bold red ink. It was a massive debt. Three million dollars.
Valeria lunged forward and snatched the paper out of my hand. She shoved it into her desk drawer and slammed it shut. Her face was totally red. The innocent, sweet mask completely melted away, leaving something ugly and mean underneath.
"What is that?" I asked. My voice shook, but not from fear. It was pure anger. "Three million dollars in debt? Offshore? Valeria, what did you do?"
"Mind your own business," she hissed. She stood up tall, crossing her arms. She did not look like my little sister anymore. "It is a private loan."
The puzzle pieces suddenly crashed together in my brain.
The missing medical supplies. The erased security computer. The acid inside Ciro's knee brace.
Valeria was drowning in secret debt. She needed a huge amount of money, fast. She partnered with bad people. She put the acid on Ciro’s gear to ruin his career, hoping the Kensington clinic would get an insurance payout or that she could take control of the family money in the chaos. And when Ciro found out, she let me take the blame.
She wanted me gone. She wanted my job. She wanted total control.
"You did it," I whispered. I backed away from her. I felt like I was looking at a complete stranger. "You put the acid in his brace. You tried to cripple him."
Valeria did not deny it. She just smiled. It was a cold, evil smile.
"You have no proof, Karol," she said softly. "The computer files are gone. And you are getting in a car today to go live with a monster. No one will ever believe you."
"I am your sister," I said, my heart breaking into a million pieces.
"You are just in my way," Valeria replied. She pointed at the door. "Goodbye, Karol. Have fun on the island."
I did not say another word. I turned around and walked out of her office.
I walked down the stairs, pushed open the heavy glass doors of the clinic, and stepped out into the freezing rain.
I did not run away this time. I walked straight toward the devil's car and climbed inside. My family wanted to sell me to the devil. Fine. But I was going to use the devil to burn their house to the ground.
Sitting on the other side of the leather seat was Ciro Restrepo. His bad leg was stretched out. He looked massive in the small space. His bronze eyes studied my wet, angry face.
"You look like a woman who just lost everything," Ciro said. His deep voice rumbled in the quiet car.
I looked right into the eyes of my enemy. I did not feel scared of him anymore. I only felt a burning, desperate need for revenge.
Ciro's arrogant smirk slowly spread across his face. He leaned forward and continued talking.
"Good," he said softly. "Let's go home, princess."
POV: KarolSomeone in the hallway was pushing the door open. They were very strong.Ciro moved fast. The deep, burning heat in his eyes turned cold. He dropped my hand, grabbed my waist, and pulled me hard behind his back."Stay behind me," he ordered. His voice was firm. The heart monitor on his chest beeped fast and loud. But Ciro did not look scared. He looked ready to kill. He sat up, ignoring his bad knee. He grabbed a heavy metal tray filled with massage oils and tools. The space in the doorway grew wider. A black leather glove pushed the heavy desk away like it was nothing. Then, a man stepped into the room.He wore a dark, wet raincoat and a black mask. Rainwater dripped onto the clean floor. He held a black gun with a long silencer in his right hand.I stopped breathing. The man pointed the gun straight at Ciro’s chest. Before the killer could shoot, Ciro yelled and threw the metal tray with all his might. It hit the man right in the face. Glass bottles broke. Warm oil splash
The First SessionPOV: Karol Kensington"Get behind me!" Ciro yelled in the dark. His strong arm grabbed my hands and my waist. I quickly ran to his back and held my breath; I was scared to death. Then, the light came on. The bright white lights of the medical room flashed back on.I blinked and looked at the door. It wasn't the killer. It was Mateo. He was dragging a heavy steel desk across the hallway floor to block the door."Sorry, boss," Mateo was breathing hard, wiping rain from his face. "The power line was cut. I just put on the generator; I am blocking this wing. No one is getting in."I let out a breath and stepped away from Ciro. The killer was still out there in the storm, but we are locked inside."It is time," I said. My voice was cold and professional. "Get on the table."Ciro did not argue. He wheeled himself to the therapy table and lifted himself up using his strong arms.I grabbed a small black box with wires."What is that?" Ciro asked, watching me closely."A hear
Setting the BoundariesPOV: Karol Kensington"Lock down every single door in this house right now!" Ciro roared."I already did, boss," Mateo said quickly. He wiped the blood off his hand with a white towel. "The storm shutters are down. The heavy steel doors are locked. But the cameras are useless in this heavy rain. We are totally blind outside.""Then we wait for him to try and get in," Ciro ordered. "Put guards at every window. No one sleeps tonight."Mateo nodded and left. The heavy glass doors slid shut behind him, locking with a loud click.I stood in the middle of the room, shaking. My stomach felt sick. A man had tried to shoot me at the airport, now my old work badge is covered in blood. It was a message. He was here, on the island, and he was hunting me."Karol."Ciro’s voice was softer now. He rolled his wheelchair closer to me. I could see the worry hiding behind his dark, angry eyes. He reached out to grab my shaking hands.I stepped back before he could touch me.If I l
Welcome to Villa AltamiraPOV: Karol KensingtonStay in the car, and keep your head down," Mateo ordered. The rain fell so hard I could barely see. The storm had finally hit the island. The wind howled like an angry animal and shook the car.Mateo and three guards jumped out into the cold rain. They pulled out their guns. Some went inside first to make sure the house was safe. They had to find the stranger from the speed boat.Ten minutes passed. Finally, the huge front doors opened. A guard waved for us to come inside.Ciro opened the car door, with the support of his staff, we ran through the rain, up the stone steps and went inside the house. As heavy doors slammed shut behind, The loud noise of the storm instantly went away.I stopped and stared. Villa Altamira was beautiful, but it was scary. The floors were shiny black stone. The ceilings were very high. One whole wall was made of glass. Through the glass, I could see dark, angry waves crashing against the rocks far below. Every
Descent to the Rosario IslandsPOV: Karol KensingtonA loud gunshot cut through the noise of the plane. Before I could even scream, a big hand grabbed my sweater. Mateo pulled me down to the floor. His huge body covered mine completely. He hid me from the open door to keep me safe."Go! Go! Go!" He yelled.Outside, I heard two more loud pops. Mateo was shooting back. A second later, everyone was inside the plane, and the pilot hit a big red button on the wall. The metal stairs folded up, and the heavy door slammed shut. The plane did not wait for us to sit. It shot down the runway and flew straight up into the sky.I lay flat on the floor. My heart was beating so fast I could not breathe. My hands shook badly. Someone had just tried to shoot me."Karol." Ciro’s deep voice was right next to my ear. His hands moved all over my arms and back, checking me. "Are you hurt? Did the bullet hit you?""No," I gasped. I looked up into his wild, hot eyes. "I am okay."Ciro let out a heavy breath.
POV: Karol KensingtonMateo’s voice was low in the quiet room. We had hidden in a safe house since the car chase."We have ten minutes. The sun is coming up, and the reporters will be awake soon. We need to leave now."I didn't get enough sleep last night; I was thinking about a lot of things. I stood up and wore a plain black sweater and jeans that Ciro provided for me. I opened the door."I am ready," I said. My voice sounded flat.Mateo checked the hallway and told me to follow him.We walked down the back stairs and out into the cool morning air. The rain had stopped. The armored SUV was waiting in an alley. The engine was already running.I got into the back seat. This time, I was alone. Ciro had left earlier, according to Mateo, to handle somethings.Mateo hit the gas. We drove onto the empty highway.I rested my head against the window. I watched the sun come up over Medellín. The sky turned a pretty blue behind the dark green mountains. It was the most beautiful city in the wo
