Typically, if a prisoner was told that they were going to be released from prison, they wouldn’t bother questioning further. Not me. I had another prison waiting for me outside, one that was included in a palace and had rules and regulations which I hated to follow. At least here, I knew what to expect. I could do my job and still be free to do as I pleased. With Maverick’s protection, I had far more liberties here than I did back home.

“We’ve got the wrong person. You weren’t supposed to be here, Miss. Volkov and your brother used his connections to make sure you won’t stay in this place any longer.”

“But…I—I’m a thief.”

Morris shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. You’re free to go.”

“Sir, there’s some mistake. You should tell Dimitri that I’m going to be released only after I’ve served my sentence.”

“I don’t have the authority to do that. I’ve received orders from my superiors to let you go and this is not in my hands.”
