The bus rolled towards what I believed was my impending doom. My new home for the unforeseeable future.
A prison for wild beasts and creatures.
The massive structure loomed ahead, green ivy covered over the grey stone walls, the tiny windows had bars over them. This looked like something right out of a horror movie. The place was high-walled, barricaded by barbed wire that was laced with enchanted spells which weren’t easy for creatures to breakthrough.
Goosebumps rose over my flesh as I wondered what was going to happen to me once I was locked inside that prison. The rumors about this place were enough to give anyone nightmares.
Dark Water prison was known for holding some of the most dangerous and ruthless prisoners around the world, including but not limited to convicted Dragons, Werewolves, Shapeshifters, Vampires, and Witches.
Worst of all, I was sentenced to ten years in that place.
I didn’t know how I was going to survive for two minutes let alone ten years.
I would mind my own business and keep my head down. No matter what anyone said to me, I wasn’t going to react to anybody.
There was news that they had captured an Alpha with a notorious reputation for being one of the most wanted criminals in the world of creatures. He seemed to be causing trouble inside the prison, and I remembered reading in the newspaper about him and thinking to myself how bad it would be to live in that place. The irony of that situation was hilarious because a month later, I ended up there.
I would make some trustworthy friends and try to stay out of the savage crowd. Rumor has it that women and men were all kept together.
This was one of the worst places I could have ended up in.
The bus passed through huge iron gates and the only sound inside the bus was the clanking of the chains and the handcuffs around our wrists and legs.
I glanced around myself and noticed three other inmates riding in the bus with me. A creature sat in the front seat, her hair was long, fair as snow, and pointy elongated ears showing through her hair. She also possessed wings, intricate and beautiful as she was. Sensing something, she turned in her seat to look at me.
I couldn’t help but stare at her. Those were a pair of prettiest grey eyes I’d ever seen. There was just something about her that one couldn’t help but feel mesmerized by.
A snap of fingers broke the trance.
“Don’t stare at her.” A voice warned from the seat behind me.
I spun halfway around to look at a girl who seemed to be of my age, early twenties. A she-wolf no doubt. I wondered what her story was.
“She traps people in her snare.” She elaborated, “That’s what fae fairies are good at. Inside the prison, her mind games won’t work but out here, I can’t say much. I’m Danny by the way. You’re the Russian vampire who stole blood bags from the hospital you worked at, right? Pleased to meet you.”
“Same here, I guess? What did you do?” I blurted out.
“Oh, I wiped out a group of werewolf hunters.” She said casually like she’d just dropped a few biscuits in her tea.
I could smell the blood on her and if I touched her, I was positive I’d see whatever that she’d done.
My gaze fell on the other members of the bus ride.
She sensed my question. “That tall guy in the back is Jake. He’s a giant.”
“His head is almost touching the roof of the bus,” I whispered.
She laughed as if we were in some conspiracy together, besties for life.
Jake was super tall and no wonder it was because of his troll genes. Rough features, big body, large hands that could punch through a wall without any problem. He fixed me with a cold stare that had me turning to face the front.
“So, what did he do?” I asked.
“He crushed a man below his feet and he believes it was a mistake, I mean that’s what I heard. Jake had just walked out to buy food and didn’t see the man until it was too late.”
The bus suddenly came to a halt and the automatic doors opened.
A man in a blue uniform climbed the bus. Green and silver scales covered half of his face. His yellow snake eyes rested on me, an evil smile stretching his lips.
“He’s a shapeshifter, don’t look into his eyes,” Danny told me.
“Alright inmates, welcome to Dark Water Prison. Line up outside.”
The minute I stepped out of the bus and heard the sounds of rowdy dangerous creatures surrounding me, I wished I’d gone back to yesterday and never stolen those blood-bags no matter how tempting it had been.
I would rather starve to death.
Uneasiness crept inside me so I looked up only to stare straight at a shirtless inmate inside a cell looking straight at me with unnerving interest. He had dark hair, mesmerizing golden eyes, and a strong chiseled jawline.
My breath hitched in my throat as I felt the intensity he was staring at me with.
And then something happened, he blinked and with an unseen force, I dropped down on my knees onto the floor.
It struck me as sure as a bolt of lightning.
He was undoubtedly the notorious Alpha.
I could hear his words whisper into my ear.
You’ll be mine soon.
SOFIAThe blood drained from my face when I heard him say that. It’s like he’d hit me with tons of bricks or threw ice water on my face. Take a pick.“You can’t be serious about this. How do you expect me to sleep with someone just to remove the werewolf’s scent?”Dimitri folded his arms across his chest. “I don’t think we have any other option, Sofia. It’s either that or father will have you assassinated in the house.”“I can’t! Dimitri…”“It is the only way.” He insisted, fire blazing in his eyes. He hated this as much as I did but my brother was powerless when it came to father. “I have already lost my mother because of our father’s temper. I don’t want to lose my sister too. Do you understand what I’m saying?”“But…I already have someone I love. I can’t sleep with someone else.”He came to sit beside me, staring into my eyes, “Is the Alpha alive?”My mind flashed back to the car ride from the prison and the sound of the gunshot. I clenched the bedsheet in my fists, tears streaming
SOFIAAfter the king had lashed out at me, he refused to speak a word. He wanted me gone, and I was glad to oblige. I wasn’t very keen on having the conversation either. As I climbed the stairs to my floor, I could still hear my father screaming at the top of his lungs.“This is unacceptable! She slept with a werewolf! A lycan.” He screeched. “There’s no going back from there.”“Father, it’s okay. As soon as she marries Prince Ivan, everything will go back to normal.” I could hear Dimitri trying to defuse the situation. As much as he hated that I’d slept with her werewolf, he was still on my side. Dimitri tried his best to help me out in the situation.“Son, she bears the mark of the Alpha!”“Yes, I know, but if I explain the situation to Ivan, he’ll understand.”“You should have just finished her when you had her released from prison, would have saved me from the shame.”“I don’t think that is necessary.”“Find a way to get rid of the mark!” The king bellows.“Don’t worry, your majest
SOFIAI stared at my neatly folded prison uniform lying on the bed. It was easier to pretend like I wasn’t leaving. That was the bitter truth I couldn’t run from.We stayed in a bubble for the last few hours. Maverick pulled me on top of him and made me ride him, and while he pumped into me, he let me marvel at his face and hold him. I didn’t even realize when tears began streaming down my cheeks; it was only when he wiped them I realized I’d been crying. He hadn’t said he loved me back and I guess it was okay because these were my feelings; he wasn’t obligated to return them. It would have been nice if he felt the same way, but when I was moved to his cell, he’d been clear that he only wanted a woman to warm his bed and that’s the only reason he was attracted to me.So, I didn’t have a reason to feel so anxious and yet I felt like I couldn’t breathe. He was going to sign the papers confirming that he’d successfully completed his duties as my protector, which also meant that Maverick
SOFIAWhy am I being released from prison?”Typically, if a prisoner was told that they were going to be released from prison, they wouldn’t bother questioning further. Not me. I had another prison waiting for me outside, one that was included in a palace and had rules and regulations which I hated to follow. At least here, I knew what to expect. I could do my job and still be free to do as I pleased. With Maverick’s protection, I had far more liberties here than I did back home.“We’ve got the wrong person. You weren’t supposed to be here, Miss. Volkov and your brother used his connections to make sure you won’t stay in this place any longer.”“But…I—I’m a thief.”Morris shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. You’re free to go.”“Sir, there’s some mistake. You should tell Dimitri that I’m going to be released only after I’ve served my sentence.”“I don’t have the authority to do that. I’ve received orders from my superiors to let you go and this is not in my hands.”“When am I going to
MAVERICK “I liked someone. A human, to be specific.” She confessed. “Where did you meet him?” “He worked for my brother as his legal advisor.” I waited patiently for her to continue. “He and I became good friends. He sneaked me out of the palace sometimes and I got to experience things that I otherwise wouldn’t have. My brother warned me about him but I didn’t listen.” If that motherfucker hurt her, I’d hunt him down and kill him myself. To think that someone would have looked at her and thought of causing her harm made my blood boil. She was insecure and didn’t trust others very easily. This man could be the reason. “There was a party in the palace and humans who willingly let vampires feed on them for favors like money or drugs. I didn’t like what my brother and father practiced so I chose to feed on animals instead.” “I was feeding in a room that’s usually not allowed for human servants to enter but I heard the lock turning and I thought it was someone from my family,
SOFIA I didn’t expect that outburst from Maverick, and definitely not the sudden declaration of ownership. He looked so lost in whatever that he was doing, he wouldn’t even pay attention to me.I wasn’t going to ask him to elaborate on what he’d just said, because that would make things so much more complicated. While Maverick was possessive when he wanted to get things done, he hadn’t told me he had any feelings for me, which was fine, because we didn’t need to complicate matters. Since he’d fought in a fight ring to protect me, he could think it gave him a free pass to own me. If he wanted us to be a thing outside of prison, he had to say it. Instead, he sat in the corner, sulking. My brother probably said things he shouldn’t have, and Maverick wasn’t going to talk. I’d done my hair and wore his favorite lingerie, but it was going to be a waste. He wasn’t coming to my bed. I fed on the blood-bag and downed a bottle of the birth-control potion. I never missed taking it. Pregnancy i
