Rune Leeder has been demoted to a servant since her father was declared a traitor. Her family was taken away from her, and she has to suffer constant bullying from other pack members. She’s sure she’ll live her life like that until she takes her last breath, but the Moon Goddess has something in store for her. Alpha Kane is the most feared Alpha in all the packs; he’s strict, ruthless, and far from happy that his mate is a servant who was demoted for her family’s involvement in treason. He swears she won’t be the Luna of the pack as it poses a threat should her father come out of hiding and decide to destroy the pack his ancestors arrived to build, but he can’t get her out of his mind, neither can he keep his hands to himself when she’s close. **** “Do you really not know, or are you pretending not to know?” Huskiness lingered in his tone. Zarah growled, and I picked up a faint musky scent, earthy and masculine, that became stronger with each passing second. Alpha Kane smirked. Zarah growled again, this time louder. I sniffed and unconsciously pulled Alpha Kane closer to me. The scent rolled off him effortlessly. I shut my eyes and buried my nose in the crook of his neck, sniffing uncontrollably as though my body had a mind of its own. It did. “MATE,” Zarah growled, and my eyes flew open. “Alright, that’s enough,” Alpha Kane peeled my hands off him, an amused smile on his lips.

Chapter 01.

Rune.

“Hmph, look at her, so dirty,” I knew that high-pitched voice anywhere. In my kneeling position, I froze, clutching the chipped wooden handle of the cleaning brush tighter.

“It suits her so well,” I heard the second voice that affirmed I wasn’t hearing things, and I was, in fact, right that Rachael and Jummy, my ex-friends, were behind me.

A bile rose in my throat as I shut my eyes and hoped they wouldn’t approach me. I looked down at my shabby grey dress, eyes locked on the streaks of dirt and dirt lines on it, all from the work I’d been subjected to just that morning.

“She’s so pathetic. I can’t even believe we were once friends with her,” Jummy huffed.

I imagined Rachael with a smirk so wicked only she could pull off as she said,

“She was never my friend; I only let her hang around because you wouldn’t shut up about her,” I forced the bile down, willing myself not to cry, not to waste a single tear on them.

I didn’t cry when the declaration of my family’s involvement in treason was made by the Alpha a little over four months ago, which sent my mother and younger sister to the dungeon and subjected me to torture. I was demoted to a servant position, a position below an Omega, a position reserved for rogues who managed to stay in the territory. My father was declared dead, we were told he killed himself when he got caught. I didn’t cry then so I wasn’t going to cry because my former friends were being mean.

“That’s so mean of you to say,” Jummy said with a fake gasp, and I decided it would do me a lot of good to finish with my cleaning and leave.

Servants were tasked with cleaning public spaces like the pack halls, medical houses, libraries, and the likes, and I was sent to the medical house for the first time. Usually, luck was always on my side, and I avoided highly populated areas, but I guess my luck ran out. I continued cleaning, eager to finish up and leave before my friends decided to make a scene.

Other wolves passed me with stink eyes as I wiped the dirt under their legs, and though I wasn’t used to it, I didn’t let it bother me much.

Luckily, neither Rachel nor Jummy said a word to me while I worked. I shouldn’t have been at ease; I should’ve known they were planning something.

“Rune, I didn’t know you were cleaning the medical house today,” I heard a soft, tiny voice say behind me; from the sound of the voice, I knew the person was kneeling like me, and a tiny sigh of relief escaped my lips. I turned slowly and beamed at Kimi. She was a young wolf who became a servant when her family escaped without her, and in search of them, she stumbled into Shadow Moon Pack just a month after I was demoted. I took an immediate liking to her because she resembled my sister, Maris, with their cute button nose, tiny heart-shaped lips, and body, although I felt Kimi was a little slimmer than Maris. They were also the same age, sixteen, with similar mannerisms.

“I didn’t know I was cleaning the medical house until twenty minutes ago. Nora fell ill,” I explained to her, to which she smiled lovingly and nodded.

“I’m done cleaning my portion; you need any help?” I shook my head immediately, sensing that she must’ve heard Rachael and Jummy and thought I was in some sort of danger.

“I don’t have much left,” I pointed at the small portion left to clean, and she nodded.

“Let’s have lunch by the waterfall when I’m finished,” I nudged her side slightly with my elbow and smiled. With a smile, Kimi got up to leave, and relief flooded my heart at the thought that Rachael and Jummy would let her be. Boy, was I wrong!

“Watch where you’re going, Freak,” Rachael’s high-pitched squeal resonated through the room, followed by a thud the moment I carried on with my cleaning, and I whipped my head to their direction so fast I thought I would break my neck.

Kimi sat on the floor with her hands behind her and her cleaning tools sprawled on the floor next to her, with dirty water flowing from the bucket beside her.

“Are you blind or just plain stupid? Look, this dirty water is everywhere on my dress,” Rachael wailed with fire in her eyes. Sure enough, the side of her lavender dress was wet and a little brown from the dirty water, but the subtle smirk Jummy threw my way told me everything I needed to know. They did that on purpose.

Kimi sat there with her lips slightly parted and fear in her eyes as other wolves now gathered, reprimanding her for something that wasn’t even her fault. That was the thing with servants; no one came to our rescue when we were being mistreated and bullied by others, especially Omegas. They believed that we were criminals set loose, and the only way to tame us, to stop us from committing more crimes, was to instill fear into us.

“I’m sorry, please forgive me,” Kimi got on her knees and rubbed her palms together. I bit my lower lip as I watched her. There was nothing I could do for her; servants were mistreated every time, and Kimi was just unlucky that it was her turn.

I thought those things, but the nagging feeling that it was my fault Kimi was being bullied suffocated me. If she hadn’t spoken to me, she would’ve been fine; she would’ve been free to go.

Rachael leaned toward Kimi and smoothed out her chestnut brown hair, but in one split second, she yanked a handful of it, raising Kimi’s lanky body a fraction.

“If you were going to apologize so quickly, why did you do it then?” I bit down on my lips harder, so hard I tasted blood.

“Yes! Drag her! These foolish servants think they can do whatever they like. They are so disrespectful!” someone said to the right of me.

“I didn’t do it on purpose, please believe me. It was a mistake, and I’m very sorry,” Kimi pleaded, but all Rachael did was laugh, clearly loving the tears that had started to pour from Kimi’s eyes.

“A measly apology is not going to cut it,” Rachael released Kimi’s hair and dusted her hand as though Kimi was filth.

“I’ll do anything, just please, forgive me,” Kimi cried.

“Don’t listen to her; you need to beat her up, or she’ll do it again and think crying and begging will help her out,” Jummy scoffed, and the wickedness in Rachael’s eyes gleamed. She loved the idea. Of course, she did; a majority of wolves loved violence more than they loved breathing, and Rachael, more than anyone, fell into that category. She had always been mean since we were pups, beating up everyone who didn’t listen to her and getting away with it since her father was the Beta of the pack at the time. She carried herself with an air of confidence because she was convinced that she would be our Alpha’s mate.

“You’ll do anything?” Rachael asked, and Kimi nodded impatiently.

“You have to help her,” my wolf, Zarah, yelled, but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t help Kimi even if I wanted to. I wasn’t the daughter of a high-ranking warrior anymore; I didn’t have the right to tell them to stop or the power to protect Kimi. Rachael and Jummy weren’t my friends anymore –they were never my friends, to begin with– so even though I wanted to, even though I felt like I should help her, there was nothing I could do.

“I want you to march over there and smack that servant across her face five times,” Rachael pointed to me. My eyes widened at the same time Kimi’s brows shut up to the roof of the building.

“I, I, I, but...she didn’t do anything?” Kimi gulped as her eyes darted from me to Rachael.

“Wrong answer,” Rachael raised her hand, and with a violent force, she smacked Kimi across her face. Tears fell from my eyes as I watched Kimi kiss the floor. The poor girl didn’t deserve that; she was only caught in the crossfire of the hate Rachael and Jummy had for me.

“Are you ready to do what I asked you to do?” Kimi couldn’t look Rachael in the eyes. She was not ready to slap me, but she also didn’t want to get slapped.

“Get up now, march over there, and smack her. I’m not going to say it again,” the room was quiet now. Everyone watched with wide, curious eyes. A wolf was being bullied, but they saw it as a source of entertainment.

Kimi didn’t move.

“No?” Rachael’s blood boiled. I could hear it from the short distance between us. This wasn’t about taunting me anymore; she felt disrespected, and it didn’t sit well with her knowing Kimi would rather get slapped than slap me.

Rachael circled her fingers around Kimi’s neck, pulling her up to her feet, and raised her hand again, this time higher than the first time; then she looked at me, her green eyes blazing with even more hatred. I knew the next slap would cause damage.

My legs started moving before I could register what was going on, and I stood in front of them.

“I know it’s me you want. Leave her alone.”

Rune. A devilish smile marred Rachael’s face as she stared at me while the other wolves gasped, clearly immersed in the drama.“What would I want with you, a servant?” she pursed her lips with a slight tint of amusement. The tears did not stop spilling from my eyes, so I wiped my face with the back of my hands.“You don’t have to do this,” my voice was shaky, with fear dripping from every word I spoke. “Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do?” Rachael smiled sweetly and let her hand land on Kimi’s face the second time, sending the poor wolf to the floor. I winced. The side of Kimi’s face was a bright red, and for a few seconds, Kimi looked around us like she didn’t know where she was or what she was doing. More tears spilled from my eyes.“She’s just a child,” I wanted to yell, but the words came out like a whisper. I hated how weak I sounded and felt. Rachael had let Kimi go, but that only meant her attention was now on me, and there would be no way out.“She’s just a

Chapter 03.
Rune. The crowd went silent and parted at the sound of the voice, and chills ran up and down my spine. Everyone knew who it was; we knew his voice by heart because he was our Alpha. I, along with everyone present, turned our heads to the parted space as Alpha Kane appeared. Tall and mighty, with his thick dark brows knotted as his eyes roamed around us, taking in the scene. Beads of sweat marred his golden tan skin, and I watched, mesmerized, as a streak of sweat ran from his neck to his collarbone, where it disappeared into the grey shirt he had on, which looked damp from the sweat, I suppose. The muscles rippling under his damp grey shirt quickened my pulse, and I sucked in a breath. I knew, just like everyone in the pack, that Alpha Kane had a ripped body, but seeing him up close was a rarity because he was almost always away for meetings and wars. It must’ve been the reason I kept my eyes on him, taking him in despite the pain I felt in every fiber of my being. Deep down, I knew i

Chapter 04.
“Thank you,” I licked my lower lips while I rubbed my left arm. Chris smiled and nodded. He parted his lips and took in a breath as though he wanted to say something and thought twice about it. I grabbed my dirty gown from the brown chair in the treatment room and headed to the small restroom to change. When I returned, Chris had cleared out the bloody cotton wool and apparatus he used to treat me and was sitting on the brown chair with worry lines evident on his forehead. “Don’t you think you should wait up for him?” He licked his lips. I blinked twice.“I’m not sure I should,” my hand flew to the back of my neck.“Alpha didn’t say I should,” I gulped. He had only ordered Chris to take care of me, and Chris did meticulously. I had no business lounging around in the medical house or the pack house when I had work to do. Chris had stitched my wounds and given me painkillers, to which he ordered that I get something to eat if I didn’t want to faint while walking. I quickly remembere

Chapter 05.
It was my second time at the pack house in six hours and my first time in Alpha Kane’s office since I was born. The room was spacious. A big mahogany desk sat proudly behind a mini library filled with old books. Two maps sat on the desk with markers on them; next to the maps sat a stack of six books on each end. The top book on the left side was open with the words PEARL CREST PACK written boldly on it. Two tall shelves sat on either side of the room, all filled with books. Despite the banging in my chest, I was awed that Alpha Kane read books. I figured he was smart due to the number of wars he’d won since he became Alpha, but in my head, he was someone who used his fists and violence to solve problems quickly insteadof critical thinking. I forced my attention on other things to distract myself from the fact that Alpha Kane and I were alone, and while he had his back to me, his anger was thick and suffocating. He had dragged me from the medical house to the pack house, with his quest

Chapter 06.
Kane.Tiny.I didn’t expect my mate to be her. The second my eyes locked on Rune’s, I knew she was my mate even before my wolf, Ky, growled and ached to claim her. There she was, sitting on the ground, her tempting curved lips slightly parted as she stared at me. She was the perfect image of a cry for help, one that I desperately wanted to respond to but couldn’t due to our surroundings. For a moment there, I thought she had figured out I was her mate when she didn’t take her innocent brown eyes off me to bow like everyone else. As a wave of disappointment hit me when she exited her trance and bowed, it was quickly replaced with a sweet sensation when I picked up her scent. She smelled of peaches, with a subtle hint of jasmine, like a fine summer afternoon in a garden. So sweet and aphrodisiacal. I wrestled with Ky for control. “MINE!” Ky barked uncontrollably while a flood of anger wrecked me at the situation she was in. I knew she would be subjected to mistreatment when I o

Rune. I never did too well with change. I hated it more than anything, especially the type of change that came without a warning. Change was overwhelming, and the idea that I would no longer be where I used to be kept me up for as long as it could—which wasn’t much because when my eyes fluttered open to rays of sun slipping into the room, I felt well rested. It felt like I had slept for days when it was just mere hours. I was convinced more than anything that the reason I was able to sleep so soundly was because of a certain musky, masculine scent that spread warmth throughout my entire body, touching me lightly with a promise that everything would be fine soon. “Everything will be fine soon,” Zarah muttered, and a little bud of hope sprouted in the pit of my mind. I didn’t want to pay any mind to the part of me that warned about false hope because even though I didn’t know what being the Alpha’s mate entailed for me, I felt a little free. I could finally sleep in a well-roofed ro

I fought the tears, threatening to fall like I was fighting for my life. I should’ve felt good, happy even, that Alpha Kane defended me, but I couldn’t bring myself to smile, knowing very well that at the end of it all, a time would come when he’d defend Rachael over me. Not that I would ever yank her hair for simply existing, but where I’d claim I was his mate, and he’d shut me down. I saw the vision clearly, and it was all I could think about as he grabbed my arm and dragged me to the living room, where I sat opposite him, watching him as he went over a book he’d picked from the other side of the couch he sat on with an air of nonchalance about him. None of us said a word. There were so many things I wanted to say and so many questions I wanted to ask, but for fear of my life, I folded my lips and swallowed the words. We were fated mates, and he didn’t want me, so I had no right to talk about my feelings. He didn’t care. Rachael and her father left shortly after the incident. More

Rune.“I will be away for a while,” came his heavy words. I shifted my weight from one leg to the other, not sure how to process the information. “Away?” I tilted my head. Did he want to go away from me? He nodded. His hair fell to his forehead, covering his brows and a bit of his emerald eyes so that I couldn’t see any emotion in them. “It seems Pearl Crest won’t back off as we thought they would,” Pearl Crest. I’d seen that name somewhere and heard other wolves talking about it. Then it clicked. It was the pack we were at war with. I instantly remembered the name written boldly in a book on Alpha Kane’s desk, along with maps sprawled on it. I nodded and paused. “Does that mean we’re going to war?” I hated how tiny my voice came out. With two fingers under his chin, Alpha Kane considered me for a few seconds before sitting upright to respond,“Not yet, but it’s inevitable,” his voice was resigned. I nodded, but the feeling that he didn’t call me just to give me a heads up abou

Chapter 10.
Rune.I woke up with a jolt. Beads of sweat marred my forehead, and I shivered in the dampness of the white night dress I had worn to bed. It was still as dark as it had been when I went to sleep. A second ago, I’d been sleeping soundly, and then a tugging in my heart had pulled me out. I tapped my chest repeatedly to help calm myself, and an unconscious sigh escaped my lips. I wiped the sweat off my face with the back of my hands as my eyes darted around the dark room. I laid my head back on my pillow, trying to force myself back to sleep, but uneasiness lodged in the pit of my stomach, making it hard to even shut my eyes. Something was wrong. I could feel it, but I couldn’t place my finger on it. With my newfound frustration, I pushed myself off my bed and went to the window to receive some fresh air, hoping it would dry off the sweat and put me to sleep, but I stilled when I saw silhouettes of two bodies moving around in the shadows.“Did you get it?” One asked, and I recognized
