Chapter 35

MARK

Once we finished breakfast I needed to head to my office and get some work done. I didn’t want to be away from Oakley but I took comfort in knowing she would be in the next room, in the Luna office, with my mom. We walked down the hallway together and then after saying we would see each other later we went into the separate offices. I grabbed a bottle of water from my mini fridge and made my way to my desk. Once I sat down I powered on my computer and set my phone on the desk. I grabbed the stack of files waiting for me to go through.

I knew it was going to be a long, boring day. Normally over the weekend I would stay caught up mostly on my paperwork and emails. but then I didn’t have my mate. now I did so I could see the weekend paperwork and emails piling up. I was able to keep an eye on the emails through my phone incase anything super important came up but otherwise I ignored it.

After answering all the emails I started in on the stack of paperwork. requests from pack members asking for funding for things, building projects needing approval, etc. A few of the things I would send to the Luna office after going through it and approving what I could. As I was finishing up one of the folders there was a knock at my door.

“Come in.” I said to whoever was on the other side. I had assumed it was my beta but I could not be any more wrong on that. The door opens and the first thing is the scent that assaults my nose. The person coming in the door is wearing far too much perfume, which is ridiculous for wolf shifters as we all have our own scent. I look up to see serenity coming into the office. She is wearing a black mini skirt with a white halter top that showed far too much cleavage. It was obvious that she did not have a bra on. She had on a pair of black high heels and had straightened her hair. She was trying far too hard and I was disgusted. She knew I had a mate and I had made it very clear to her that I had no interest in her. I don’t even know what would make her think I was interested in her.

“Hello alpha.” She purred as she closed the door behind her.

“What do you want serenity?” I asked her, keeping my emotions blank. As much as I wanted to just throw her out of my office she is a pack member and I tried to treat them all equally. she walked over and placed both of her hands on the desk, leaning forward to show even more of her cleavage but instead of indulging her I kept my eyes on her face.

“I came to see what I could do for you alpha.” She said. before I could say anything I got a mind link from my mother letting me know the she was going to lunch with Oakley to meet Beth and the other ladies. She reassured me they were staying on pack lands and that they were going to the bakery. I let her know that I was in a meeting. I turned my attention back to serenity who had stood up and crossed her arms, waiting impatiently.

“You know it’s rude to take a mind link when you have someone in your office.” She said.

“You know that you should not be speaking to your alpha like that and I will always answer a mind link from my mother.” I sneered at her. She dropped her arms and moved to sit in one of the chairs in front of my desk.

“What does she have that I don’t?” She asked me.

“Well for starters she is my goddess given mate. I never planned on taking a chosen mate and I never gave you any reasons to think I was interested in you in any way. I never had any plans to take a chosen mate, ever. I don’t know what gave you that impression.” I told her as nicely as I possibly could when all I wanted to do was throw her out of my office.

“I am far better than her. One day you will see that.” She told me. she turned around and stomped out of my office. I waited a few minutes before I left the room myself. I needed to get away from the stench she left behind. I mind linked a couple of the omegas and kindly asked them to clean my office and try to get rid of her stench.

I was feeling pretty tired from the night before and so I decided that I would try and take a nap. I knew the only place I would be able to do that was the alpha quarters and so I headed up that way when I got a mind link from my beta.

“Alpha! Rogues are in the territory!” He said urgently. I jumped up and headed for the door.

“Where? How many?” I asked him as I ran down the stairs. I saw my dad and gamma at the bottom but I didn’t stop. They didn’t even bother to ask questions, just running in behind me.

“the south. We tracked a group of them from their camp and they went around the whole way around the border. There are a few warriors watching the camp to make sure it’s not a distraction. There’s about 10 of them.” he responded. I could tell that he had shifted into his wolf but it didn’t sound like he was fighting yet. I ran out the door followed by my dad and gamma. As soon as I shifted into zorro mid run they shifted to their wolves and fell in step beside me. We ran towards the south, jumping fallen trees. after a moment of running we reached were beta jack was with a few other warriors. i could see the rogues, just inside the border line, a few of them in wolf form and a few not. I stopped just next to beta jack and shifted back to human form. A warrior threw me a pair of shorts that I quickly put on.

“you are trespassing.” I said to them.

“Hand over the special one and we will leave peacefully.” One of the rogues said.

“What are you talking about.“ I asked. I knew exactly what he was talking about but decided to play dumb, hoping to get more information from him.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.” He sneered.

“Enough of this!” Shouted one of the other rogues. He shifted into his small brown wolf and took the attack position. I shifted back into zorro and waited for them to make the first move. My beta shifted into his wolf, my dad and gamma flanking us, warriors on either side. I quickly mind linked Oakley to see where they were. Then the first rogue attacked. He jumped at one of my warriors who easily dodged him. I knew we could easily take them out, they were small and mangy. One of the rogues came at me, snapping his jaws. I sided stepped him and swiped his side as he passed me, causing him to bleed. He growled in anger and turned back around to me. He seemed to be the bigger of the rogues there. He crouched down in an attack position. He jumped at me and I rolled away, turning back and jumping on his back my jaws around the back of his neck. He rolled over, trying to throw me off. I dug my claws into his back, clinging to him. He reached his mouth around and grabbed a hold of my leg, pulling. He was not very successful. I was tired of this. I wiggled out from underneath him, ripping my leg from his mouth. I could feel the fur ripping and the blood pooling down my leg. I knew it would not take long to heal so I wasn’t worried. I pushed him over, standing on him. Grabbing him by the throat I shook hard until his neck snapped. I could hear the gurgling of his last breath leaving him. I got off of him and shifted back. I saw that the others had taken care of the rest of the rogues with minimal injuries. I shifted back and grabbed a pair of shorts from the nearby tree we kept for when situations like this occurred. I threw a pair at my beta, dad and gamma. The warriors had grabbed their own and were already grabbing the bodies to pile them up and burn them.

“Alpha, there are only 9 bodies here.” One of the warriors said. I exchanged looks with my dad and then we took off towards the pack in search of the remaining rogue. How did he get by us? We shifted because running in wolf form was faster. I could smell the nasty scent of the rogue and followed that. Thankfully it seemed to be going away from the pack house but headed towards the park. I just hoped no one was out with their pups right now. The pack had been alerted of the rogues so no one should be out. Then I suddenly heard what sounded like a child screaming. I ran as fast as I possibly could in the direction it game from, praying to the moon goddess that I was not too late.
