Chapter 2 Bride Price

Laura got into a taxi and returned home. She was planning on telling her grandmother that she was married. However, she planned on making some food for her grandmother before she went to the hospital.

As soon as Laura walked into the house, she saw Shone Walker walking towards her with a smile on her face.

"Laura, I've picked a man for you today. He's nine years older than you, so he's 34, but he really knows how to take care of people. His ex-wife gave birth to a son for him before she died. You won't even have to give birth to a child after you marry him. The most important thing is that he's willing to give 40 thousand dollars as bride price. I've already accepted his offer for you. You should get a good night's rest tonight and dress up tomorrow for a meal."

Laura clenched her fists which were hanging at either side of her.

Ever since she was little, her mother had preferred boys to girls. Her younger brother had recently got a girlfriend, so her mother wanted her to be married as soon as possible. This way, there would be a bride price which could be used for her brother's wedding.

"Mom, I'm already married." Laura got straight to the point and took out the marriage certificate from her bag.

Shona looked at the marriage certificate in disbelief. She was so angry that she felt like she was going to explode. "You bitch! I've gone through so much trouble to raise you, how dare you marry someone without letting me know? So you think you're all grown on now, aren't you?"

As Shona said those words, she lifted her hand to slap Laura.

This caused Laura to quickly back out of the door.

"Go! Get lost! This house doesn't welcome you!"

Chris was busy with his work until the evening.

That was when his phone rang. He looked at the caller ID before answering the call.

"Where's my granddaughter-in-law?" Madam Jacobs' voice sounded on the other end of the line.

Chris frowned. "I don't know."

"You don't know? You're already married and you don't know? Have you driven her away? Did you tell her to move in with you?"

Madam Jacobs knew this grandson of hers very well. As the successor of the most affluent family in Empfield, Chris had always been a work freak.

Madam Jacobs had wanted a great-grandson for ages, but Chris had never wanted to satisfy her request.

It just happened that she had met a good friend a few years back when she was on holiday. The two of them added each other on WhatsApp.

She was also able to find Laura on Twitter as well. Through Laura's Twitter, Madam Jacobs was able to find out that Laura was in Empfield as well. Not only that, Laura was going on blind dates via a dating website!

Madam Jacobs was immediately excited and wanted Chris to marry Laura.

However, Chris never listened to her.

Madam Jacobs was left with no choice but to pretend that she was sick to force Chris to marry Laura.

However, Chris took Madam Jacobs' words quite differently.

When he saw Laura in the morning, he felt that she was a scheming person because she was able to persuade his grandmother to get him to marry her.

Now, he felt that Laura even knew to complain to his grandmother as well.

Chris's face turned cold as his impression of Laura worsened.

"I don't want to live with her."

"Let me tell you this, Chris Jacobs! Take my granddaughter-in-law in right this instant. Or... or..." Before Madam Jacobs could finish speaking, she began panting heavily.

Soon after, the sound of the servants sounded on the other end of the line. Chris had no choice but to say, "Alright, I'll go pick her up now."

"Hurry up!" Madam Jacobs immediately returned to normal.

After hanging up, Chris wanted to give Laura a call, but when he was about to dial her number, he realized that he hadn't saved her number.

He then hesitated for a while, he gave Madam Jacobs another call to ask for Laura's number. Of course, he was scolded by Madam Jacobs again.

When Chris got Laura's number, he immediately gave her a call, but no one answered.

'This can't be my fault. I gave her a call, but she didn't answer,' thought Chris.

Chris only got off work after 11 o'clock at night.

There weren't many cars on the roads at this hour.

Suddenly, Chris saw a familiar figure walking on the pavement not far away.

'It's her,' Chris thought with a frown.

"Stop the car." Remembering what Madam Jacobs said to him, Chris gave his assistant, who was driving, the order.

When the car came to a stop, Chris got off the Maybach and chased after Laura.

His strides were way larger than Laura's and so was his pace.

It was late Autumn of the year. When Laura was chased out of the house, she was still wearing the clothes she wore in the morning, which were a little thin during the night.

She raised her little face and looked at the sky. The moon was clear and bright.

"What are you doing out so late?"

Laura came back to her senses when she suddenly heard a voice reaching her ears. She had no idea that there was someone next to her.

"Chris, what are you doing here?" Laura was a little surprised when she saw Chris.

"I just got off work."

Laura realized what was going on.

Chris's profile said that he was working in a small company. It seemed that the company had a lot of work to do and that was why he got off work so late at night.

"Are you walking home?" Laura looked around and saw a black Maybach passing the two of them and driving off into the distance.

Chris's lips moved and then nodded. "Yeah."

He didn't know why Laura got on his grandmother's good side and convinced his grandmother to get him to marry her, so he didn't want to tell Laura too much about himself.

"I've been quite busy today, so I forgot to tell you where I live. I tried ringing you in the evening, but you didn't answer."

"I didn't hear my phone ring." Laura took out her phone from her bag and realized that it had run out of battery. She then smiled apologetically at Chris. "I'm sorry, my phone rang out of battery."
