001 What Their Happiness Looks Like

Scarlett died today, on the way to her beloved husband, in the hands of that exact husband and her own "loving sister"...

Ten minutes ago--

Her car flipped over and crashed into the ground. Bound to the driver's seat upside down, Scarlett couldn't see or move for several minutes before she realized what happened--

She'd crashed into a car that had just cut her off on the highway and suddenly braked hard.

Everything hurt. Her legs were jammed between the seat and the cracked steering wheel. Her arms twisted at a bizarre angle with broken glass pieces sticking out. A large piece of glass stuck out of her chest, blood oozing out. Her head was pounding from hitting the window, leaving her sight blurred.

Scarlett let out a bitter and painful laugh -- she thought her misery was finally over when she was released from prison only a week ago, and here she was, dying in pain, alone.

A pair of feet came into her fuzzy sight.

"Help...please..." Scarlett tried to shout, only to realize her voice was barely audible.

Though her marriage was failing, though she spent the last two years in prison, though her family was now broken into pieces, she still wanted to live. Because Wyatt, her beloved husband, said he would finally forgive her sin, the sin she brought with her into their marriage!

That was, if she went to prison in his place.

And she did, cursing the damned name of her "sin" every single one of the past 700 days and nights she spent in that hellhole.

Everett Dunn.

The infamous bastard that everyone in the city despised, drugged her before raping her on the night of her bachelorette party. He only did that because Scarlett was engaged to Wyatt, his arch-nemesis.

Scarlett's name was ruined, her family name was dragged through the mud, and the wedding ceremony was called off. Wyatt took her to the city hall during his lunch break a few days later.

Scarlett was grateful that Wyatt still married her.

She had been waiting for the day of Wyatt's forgiveness ever since.

That day was yesterday.

After the darkest three years of her life, Scarlett got Wyatt's promise that he would get over the stain of the rape.

She yearned to see what their happiness could look like so badly!

Her life was finally about to turn towards a brighter future, and she wanted to live more than anything else.

"Sir, please..." Scarlett tried to move, her voice faint, "...help me..."

"I'm sorry things have come to this, Scar," the man let out a cold sigh, his tone indifferent.

Scarlett's blood froze as shock took over her -- she recognized his voice.

She would recognize that voice anywhere! How could she not? It belonged to her beloved husband, the man she had loved with all her heart for the past seven years!

Scarlett could not process why he was here. But his cold calmness raised an unexplainable fear in Scarlett.

Wyatt bent down to meet her eyes and continued: "But I love Emma. I really wish you would have agreed to a divorce yesterday..."

"Wyatt?" Scarlett tried to utter with trembling lips, searching her brain for the name Emma and failed, "You said we can put everything behind us yesterday...you promised..."

She saw those genuine eyes, the exact same ones that tripped her into love, were now spraying genuine, touching love just like before, except the love was now for another woman.

"I'm sorry, Scar," Wyatt said with a straight face, "you are just not my type."

Not his type. A bitter laugh left Scarlett.

They had been together for FIVE years. She had been infatuated with him since she was sixteen! All her good years she gave to him!

He liked quiet beauty, so she restrained her lively character and learned to be elegant; he was too arrogant to have a woman shine brighter than him, so she dimmed her light as the most popular girl in their social circle to let him shine.

She changed herself to fit his taste, and now he said, she wasn't his type...

"Please...help me..." Scarlett closed her eyes and tears rolled down her cheeks mixed with blood, "I'll divorce you, I promise."

Wyatt didn't even mention that he wanted a divorce. It was only because he just persuaded her to sign over her family stocks to him last week! Scarlett thought in desperation. How stupid she was. If she had known he really wanted a divorce she would have agreed.

But there was no point for her to tell him that now.

"My dear little sister, did you miss me?" A joyful voice suddenly emerged as a pair of high heels came up to Wyatt's side.

"Laura..." Scarlett raised her head to look at her big sister. She lived with Laura's unmistakable sweet voice for 19 years before she went to prison, "thank God...I'm hurt, and I--"

"I know you are, but not enough for my satisfaction," Laura cut off Scarlett's weak mumble, "you will though, in a minute."

"Laura?" Scarlett frowned, trying to move her head to see her sister and husband, but blood blurred her sight.

"You have no idea how much I hate you!" Laura said slowly in such a vicious tone that Scarlett felt goosebumps. "Everything you had, you took from me! The family company, the title of the beloved daughter of the richest family in the city, the love of my life!"

The combination of words bursting out of Laura made no sense to Scarlett's twirling mind.

Scarlett frowned to focus her eyes on Laura's face, and that face was twisted by hatred with a shred of insanity that froze Scarlett with fear.

"Just because I was adopted, I was ripped from all these when you were born! Your parents should never have given birth to you after they adopted me!" Laura got so riled up her whole body was shaking as she shouted.

"I didn't know you were adopted..." Scarlett mumbled.

Scarlett's parents tried for years to have a baby until they finally gave up and adopted Laura in their mid-thirties, only to give birth to Scarlett four years after that. To protect their two daughters, they had never told either of them that Laura was adopted.

"The self-driving car would have done the trick, but I insisted on coming to see you one last time, dear little sister, do you know why?" Laura laughed viciously, "Because I want to see the pain in your eyes when I tell you what YOU have brought on yourself!"

"What...?" Scarlett could barely process Laura's words with her consciousness fading.

"Your beloved grandfather died in the hospital yesterday," Laura curved her lips, "right after I told him that you signed over the family stocks he gave you first thing after you came out of prison! His last words were your name. See? Your family has never loved me!"

Laura mimicked their grandfather's voice calling Scarlett's name over and over. Every word was like little knives carving into Scarlett's heart.

"No...can't be true..." Scarlett mumbled, darting her bloodshot pupils to the man standing beside Laura.

"Your parents never loved me as they love you! Or they wouldn't give you control of the family business when you know nothing about it!" Laura snorted coldly, "Why do you think I sent them on that Mexico trip?"

Because it was easier to hire killers overseas. Tears fell down Scarlett's eyes as she finally began to understand the tragedy of her parents' deaths.

Desperation grabbed Scarlett.
