The second she turned around and saw us her eyes went wide. She looked nervous, her eyes darted around the castle grounds almost like she was looking for an escape route. She doesn’t take her eyes off Jan while she gets some clothes on. And like the arse Jan is THAT is when he decides to give me back control and shifts back into our human form.
“Any particular reason you followed me ALPHA?!”
“Um, well, I was really... just... kinda hoping that I might be able to persuade you to let me take you out for dinner?”
I almost screamed at her. What the hell is wrong with me? I have NEVER had that much issue trying to talk to a woman before!
“Not too sure what you don’t get about ‘there’s no future for us’, do I need to use smaller words?”
'Ooof our mate is feisty! I LOVE IT!'
'You are NOT helping Jan, and thanks for dropping the ball on her NOT catching us being a creeper!'
Alaina starts to walk away, further into the forest. At least she's still in her human form, I can talk to her like this
'and fack it all up more.'
'Janus, come on man you’re supposed to be on MY side! Stop being a douchecanoe!'
'Don’t fack this up and we can talk about the canoeing.'
'Janus... it’s not... never mind.'
Somedays I wonder if he pays attention to anything that’s going on when I’m in control.
SHAT I basically need to run to catch up to Alaina. She can’t be more than 5’5” and, yet, at 6’5” I am having to run to catch up to her little legs!
“Alaina, PLEASE, wait, or at least slow down, so we can talk.” I plead as I catch up with her.
“What is your major malfunction? Stop being a git and shut up, just bugger off and leave me alone!”
“Please, I am begging, one dinner, or a walk, or sitting on the river bank, SOMETHING! Just give me a couple of hours to get to know you. I am not going to try and whisk you away without you accepting the bond, don’t get me wrong Janus and I want to but, I won't do anything you don’t want me to.”
“Funny, I don’t want you following me, or bothering me, and yet here you are doing both. So, you were saying?” She bellowed, as she breaks into a sprint.
“Alaina, I am trying. I am not sure what I did but I just want a chance...” I call after her, as I slow down, “please” I almost whisper
As I shove my hands in my pockets, kick the dirt, and turn around to walk away, head hung VERY low. How had this gone so wrong so fast?
'I don’t know what to do now Jan. We’ve got 11 more days here, and I have a feeling that if we keep trying this way it may end up with her actually rejecting us.'
'Ash, I don’t have anything man. I don’t think that there is an answer for Alaina! When Callum said strong willed, he wasn’t kidding, I don’t think we have ever met anyone quite like her! And what Callum said about Tyche being reasonable?! If THAT’S reasonable... shat I don’t want to know what unreasonable is!'
'What do you mean? Did you two talk? What happened?'
'Basically, the same thing as you, only I was told that, in no uncertain terms, if we continued, she would eat something that we hold very dear...'
I could feel him tucking his tail between his legs in the back of my mind, and he let out a not so quiet whimper! I come to a very abrupt stop, and I know there’s a look of shock and disbelief on my face. I am sure that if anyone else was around they would be concerned that something horrible happened. Really, what’s worse than your mate threatening to eat parts of you that you kinda need?!
'Wait, did she threaten to... no... she didn’t... did she really threaten to eat our dingle berries?!?!?!?!'
'See what I mean? If THAT is reasonable, I don’t want to see what unreasonable is!'
'I don’t blame you man, that’s some crazy shat right there!'
I continue to walk back to the castle when I get a feeling as though I’m not alone, and I’m not talking about Janus. Looking around I don’t see anyone, I can’t smell anyone –or anything out of the ordinary-, but I am extremely unsettled with the feeling of being watched. As I round the corner of the castle towards the driveway, I get bombarded by the last person I want to see.
“Ooooooo ASHY!!!!!!”
'Oh, for fack off! Why Ash, I’ve always told you ‘keep your dingle out of crazy’ and what did you go do? You didn’t stick it into crazy... YOU WENT AND STUCK IT INTO PSYCHOTIC! WHY?!'
'I don’t know, I honestly don’t! She is most definitely my biggest mistake AND biggest regret, I don’t think anything could top the mistake that is Gray!'
“Gray, it is Alpha... Alpha Ashton... h3ll I’d settle for and Alpha Ash for fack sakes! I am, however, NOT Ashy, or any other annoying nickname you have unilaterally decided to give me!”
“Oh, come on, is that really how you are going to greet me? I flew all the way out here just for...”
“No one asked you to come here, no one even hinted that you were wanted on this trip, so if you try and say it was for me you can shove it! You didn’t come here for me, you came here in hopes I wouldn’t find my mate and, you might be able to wear me down enough that you might have the chance get the status and title of Queen. Sorry to burst your bubble Gray, I‘ve met my mate, I would NEVER have had you as my Queen anyways, and I really don’t want you here, so you can go home now!”
I stopped and turned to her.
“I have always been upfront with you about our ‘relationship’,” I do those air quote things “if that is what you want to call what happened, and the fact I would NEVER go past that. So why do you insist to annoy, and piss me off, doing this shat? If anything, it makes me want you even less! You should probably stop while you are a head, and before I ban you from my territory. You may not be part of my pack but that just makes it easier for me to boot you!”
I turn back to the castle door, make my way up the stairs, and do my best to slam the, very old, solid, and VERY heavy door. It didn’t have the desired effect, and it shut so slowly there was barely an audible click when it finally did shut. At least I was safe in here from her!
'If she kept her mouth open any longer, she would have ended up with a hornets nest in there! I wonder if she’s still standing there, mouth agape?'
'I really don’t give a shat Jan, seriously, not one fack given when it comes to Gray!'
I walk, as quickly as possible, up to my room. It would have been so much nicer, and possibly easier, if Alpha Rodrigo had just held the meeting here and not in the convention hall, there would have been more time to spend getting to know the other Alphas, and possibly Alaina. At the risk of sounding like a bigger creeper than I already am, thanks Jan, I could have potentially planned out ‘accidentally’ bumping into her between meetings now we are in one big hall and just bounce around. Alaina doesn’t move from her table, ever. Oh well, ce la vie! Time to think of things to at least pique her interest enough to want to go to dinner with me.
Ash POV “I’m not sure that the use of the cameras, in the direction of where the actual tribe lives, is a good idea, what can we do to prevent that?” I ask Dan as the phone rings. “Hello?” “Ash, ‘ol buddy, ‘ol pal.” “Uhhh… yes?” “Shane, from Winslow pack in Dundurn.” “Oh, hey! I didn’t recognize your voice!” “I need to know when everyone is being sent to Tsuut'ina pack so I can get some produce and meat shipped over.” “OH!!! I still need to talk to the tribal chief, but I am working with my head of security to come up with a system that wont be overly invasive, and will be easily removed, before I call her.” “Ok, give me a call when you’ve figured that out and we will get a couple truck sent out there.” “Thanks Shane!” I barely hang up the phone before it rings again. “Hello?” “Ashton, I have been waiting f
Ash POV “Well, I guess we have some work to get done.” Scott nods at me. I can see the repugnance on his face. I’m not sure if it’s with himself, me, or the situation in general, but I have a feeling our friendship will never be the same. My relationship with all of the Alphas will have changed by the end of this. I don’t know if we should take up the kingship after dad steps down. I don’t know if I should be an Alpha anymore. “I know what’s going through your head Ash,” Scott says as he places his hand on my shoulder. “We are still good. This is not your fault; you’ve just been dealt a REALLY shit.ty hand!” I nod, not fully believing him. I mean, yeah, the entire situation is completely, and totally, fu.cked up. It’s been reiterated, I don’t know how many times now but, no one could have predicted this. Even if everyone took the ‘bedtime story’ of Selene’s reincarnation as truth… no one could have thought that there would be someone this
Ash POV Within 25 hours of my call with dad we are all on Skype with the various Alphas, and royal families. There are a handful that had to do a phone call, due to fight issues, or their location not allowing them to get places fast enough, but the bulk of them have made it to this call. The Canadians have all amassed at Blue River, St. Bruno, as that was the best place for flights, with the exception of Scott and I, since that as.shole Kushim is currently in our vicinity and actively attacking. Scott did make his way down to my office, to try to eliminate the number of open windows in the chat as much as possible, but we both know he may need to leave in a rush. The pictures are small, but it will work. I notice that as each location speaks their picture lights up with a little ring around it. Well, that makes things a lot easier! “I have called you all to this meeting to talk about the rogue problem and the prophecy of a mad man.” I watch a closely and everyone see
Ash POV I make a slow walk back to the pack house, with Clara draped in my arms, holding her tight. By the time I get back to town she has no colour left in her face, as hard as I try to keep her head to my chest it flops around as I walkAs I pass by pack members I can hear the gasps, see them cover their mouths in shock, and hear the murmurs about what could have happened. The tears fall down my face, and I don’t even try to hide them. The time of being ‘the big tough Alpha’ is over. I can’t pretend like it didn’t happen, I can’t pretend like these things no longer affect me, the truth… the truth is that this is breaking me. It started out slowly, and I don’t even know when it got to this point, but, if I am being honest with myself, I am becoming a broken man. I will always do everything I can to protect Alaina, I will do everything I can to protect my pack… all of the packs… but I don’t know how much longer I can keep it together enough to do it effectively. I have made so many mi
Ash POV Scott agreed to help call some of the Alphas, Cal and Alex have split a bunch amongst themselves and I got Yu and… Kendrick. I sit at my desk, head in my hands, wondering just how I am going to do this. After Alaina took Kendrick down at the Alpha meeting a few years ago I’m not sure he will be willing to help, at least not if its to help her, and Yu… I never did get a read on how he took Alaina yelling at him. I DO know that if they are in the same room together she will likely want to beat the ever-loving sh.it out of him. Fu.ck, having a strong minded, out spoken, and full of… having Alaina as a mate is definitely challenging at the moment! Not many Alphas appreciate Lunas being like Alaina. They want a quiet, subservient, Luna that has no real mind of her own. Alaina caused a lot of waves in Spain and I don’t think anyone has forgotten. ‘That being said… they do still want to be on the royal families good side!’ ‘Good point… I don’t know if t
Ash POV Walking back into my office Alex, and Austin, are waiting, looking at a map sprawled out across my desk. “What’s going on?” Alex looks up at me, then back to the map, before pointing to the eastern border. “They came in from the East this time. Our patrols were able to get to them before they really got into the territory, but we weren’t expecting it.” “What’s with the one that was caught?” Alex gives a little chuckle, turning and, half sitting on my desk. “Yeah… ‘caught’” He air quotes, chortling a little harder, with Cal and Austin quickly joining him. I raise an eyebrow and look at each of them waiting for someone to explain. “She never shifted, the second she saw our warriors she kneeled, hands on top of her head, and didn’t move, or say anything, until after the fight was over. Whe-” “How was she not brought into the fight?” “She stayed back, a good thirty feet, whi
