[02] How it all started

FEW DAYS LATER...

"Mom!..." She screamed as she felt liquid flow rapidly down between her thighs.

She was feeling dizzy and somewhat weak as Granny came to her rescue, packed her stuff and some baby things and headed straight to the hospital.

She was wheeled Immediately from the emergency Ward to the labour ward.

Ok you might be wandering how do I know all this... I wasn't there... But my Mom really was detailed with the bed time stories...

Yeah yeah let me save you all the boring sad drama...

I was born period!... Let's take a leap shall we?...

FIVE YEARS LATER...

October 7th, 2005...

Oh I remember this day all too well...

My Mom and I were having some mother-daughter bonding time as she read to me from my favorite story book. It was a cool autumn Saturday evening.

I sat on her lap while she read to me, asking questions randomly about the story, when we heard a knock on the door.

Tap!. Tap!...

The knock came again, as I saw my mother's mood drop drastically, and then she said to me...

"Let's play a little game of hide and seek okay?." She said and I nodded happily. "Go and I'll come find you!." She said with a weak smile, trying to fake enthusiasm.

I could tell something was wrong, even with the brain of a five year old... Which is what I had, because I was five.

"Okay Mommy!." I said smiling gaily as she kissed me on the cheek and adjusted my curls before I went into hiding.

I ran out of her sight and began scrambling for a place to hide, after grabbing my teddy, I hid under my tween bed, although I wasn't yet a tween, I liked my big bed.

Mom said that Dad bought the Teddy for me, long before I was born and that I was to cherish it and keep it safe. It was a big brown bear with glassy white eyes and brown pupils.

I had been under the bed for a while and she hadn't come to find, I was feeling scared and just then I heard a loud rumbling from the other side of the house... The living room...

Mom!... I gasped and gathered all the courage I had and went to the living room.

I stood by the entrance from the hallway hiding behind a connecting wall as I listened to their conversation, watching and waiting silently, as I saw my Mom scramble to her feet, bleeding from her mouth. He had hit her. I wanted to do something but I was scared and little.

"You have a choice Sara, either do as you're told, or your husband and your little kid suffer the consequences." The tall man dressed in all black with a black hat said.

I didn't see his face clearly, but the tattoo on his neck was visible despite the distance. It was a viper with sharp fangs hanging out of it's wide opened mouth.

"Please don't hurt them." I heard her beg.

"You know what to do Sara, call me when you're ready!..." He said finally and walked out.

Immediately he walked out, my Mom turned towards the entrance like she knew I was there already, she looked at me with pained eyes. I didn't know when I ran into her arms.

"Mom what's going on." I asked.

"It's gonna be okay, I promise, it's fine, everything fine." She said and sniffed back tears.

"Please don't go away." I said to her, not exactly sure why though.

"I won't..."

"Pinky promise?."

She pulled me by my shoulders, looking into my eyes, she replied...

"Pinky promise!." Holding her pinky up so it could intertwine with mine.

A WEEK LATER...

I woke up from sleep, glanced at my alarm clock, it was half passed midnight. I had a bad dream, So I held unto my teddy and went over to...

"Mom?." I said knocking on her bedroom door.

No answer came, so I rapped at the handled and it opened almost immediately. I walked over to her bed expecting to see her sleeping calmly, but instead... I just... There was nothing, no one on the bed.

I thought maybe she went to the bathroom, so I waited silently while sitting on the bed.

I heard the front door open, after some minutes, it was then I began panicking, who was in our house?...

I wanted to run and hide but instead I was brave enough to go and check it out this time. Gripping my teddy tighter, I walked quietly to the sitting room.

The lights were on...

"Mom?." I called out shakily.

Silence was over the place, I heard a ruffling and then I heard a whimper behind the door. I rushed to the window...

"Mom?." I said as I saw her walk to a black van on the main road. Rain was falling, I didn't notice until now.

"Mommy!!!...." I screamed as tears began pouring down my cheeks, she didn't turn or look back at me...

I was about to run outside the house and go to her when I saw her talking to that same man again, who was holding the door open for her while she stepped in and they zoomed off into the night. Fear struck me.

"She didn't even say goodbye..." I muttered to myself... Well over time I've tried to convince myself that there was nothing I could do about it, because I was a scared five year old kid.

I slumped down onto the chair, knees up and cried. When I raised my head up again, I noticed a box, a pink box, with the cover by it's side on the table.

I recognized the box as the one we bought from the flea market on Sunday Evening. But I didn't understand why it was here so I walked over and found a letter, a locket that had a picture of both of us in it, a blue glass bird, a bracelet with my name on it, my Mom's favorite book, my stocking from last Christmas, and pictures.

I opened the letter after surveying the box... I wasn't much of a reader then, and my Mom had home schooled me not wanting me to start school Immediately... To protect me she had said... It all made sense now.

The few words I could make out were:

"I'm sorry darling, I'm going to come back soon... I love you so much sweetheart. Be good for Mama... Mom!."

Well...

This was just the beginning of what turned my life complicated...
