The smell filled Kendrick's nostrils before he could open his eyes. Snapping out of his slumber he sat up as his wolf struggled to come out.
He sat still for a while trying to calm his wolf. "It's not here."
His wolf quieted down, letting out sad whimpers as he rushed to wear his clothes. He stepped out of his house and squinted, the sun shone very brightly, and he could almost feel his skin sizzling.
A glance at his wristwatch revealed it was still early in the morning, the road was bustling with people all around.
Has there been another death?
He stood in front of his house as he tried to pick where the smell came from. It was the river, it was close to his house so he walked hurriedly to the direction.
The smell became stronger as he picked a familiar scent. Was that someone he knew?
His wolf peeped, channelling its energy into his legs as he burst into a run. He arrived at the river and gasped at the number of people looking at the body. He growled deeply, registering his presence.
The wolves at the river all bared their necks in submission as they created a path for him to pass through. He walked through the path they had made and gasped as he saw the body. She lay stark naked with cuts all over her.
The gory sight made him belch as his stomach contents threatened to spill out. He moved closer and saw her face.
"Steph," he whispered.
She was a maid at the pack house. What was she doing by the river?
He touched her hands trying to read her earlier memories. Kendrick closed his eyes as an image of her rustling through the bushes appeared in his head.
He grimaced as he saw her view of the hidden wolf, the wolf was about to reveal itself when his father's voice echoed as his mind link popped open.
"You're not permitted to use your powers!"
Kendrick groaned, clearly pissed at the interruption.
A warm hand covered his hand on the lady's hand and he glanced up to look at his brother Collon.
"You should get out of here," he warned coldly.
Kendrick yanked his hands away from his brother's hands as he walked away from the river.
His dad had some explaining to do. He hurried home, hopped into his black BMW and drove to the pack house.
The doors were wide open, and releasing curse words he barged in, attracting the attention of the wolves in the house.
"Where's my father?" Kendrick demanded
"I'm right here!" A voice thundered and he turned to face his dad. He watched as his father adjusted his robe and walked gently down the stairs.
The packhouse was a very huge mansion which had enough rooms to contain thousands of wolves. It always bustled with activities before his father became the Alpha, and since he became the Alpha, he had moved everyone out, saying he needed privacy to rule effectively.
Though he didn't move members of his family, Kendrick had left in anger. He couldn't bear to live with a man as wicked as his father.
"Alpha Elton, Good morning!" He greeted his father when he finally got to the last step. His blood boiled as an image of the dead maid crossed his mind again.
She wasn't supposed to be dead if the Alpha had been considerate and allowed the Pack members to stay in the packhouse. The deaths could also have been avoided if he made peace with the other packs. His father ignored his greeting and sat on his huge oak chair.
He waved his hands and the wolves present filed out after bowing their heads to him.
Kendrick turned to face him as his wolf growled, wanting to come out.
His wolf's hatred was as deep as his own, he glared at the man who killed his mate, Kendrick's mother and sighed.
Fighting his father would probably end his life. His mum, Luna Katarina, had been one of the best female fighters in their pack but his father had killed her mercilessly and in one slash of the throat. Kendrick detested his father so much.
"Why were you at the scene?" His father asked, surprising Kendrick. Was he insinuating that he should have ignored the smell of the blood and not done anything?
"I was representing you," he replied after a while.
"I didn't ask to be represented!" His father yelled at him. The yelling had no effect as Kendrick moved closer to his father.
"You should have thought twice before making me your beta," he yelled back, making sure to raise his voice louder.
"You must have a death wish!" A cold voice snapped as his brother Collon walked in, leaving an aura in his wake. Kendrick hissed through his teeth.
His brother was as bad as his father when it came to the welfare of the pack members, his heart ached as he recalled the deaths in the previous months.
"It's been six months… We've been losing pack members for months!" Kendrick muttered, completely ignoring his brother.
"She disobeyed the order. Why go swimming in the middle of the night?" His father retorted and Kendrick couldn't help but shake his head.
"It's a wolf city. She's supposed to be safe regardless of the time, she works as a pack maid, why wasn't she at the packhouse?"
"She had her own accommodation."
"It's not safe, how long are you going to allow them to stay at danger's length?"
Kendrick was becoming infuriated. His father had broken the bond that existed among the packs. Killing his mate, enthroning another Luna.
The pack members had grown to hate and fear him. If something wasn't done, the strong warriors would all be dead leaving the weak and young ones.
He decided that arguing with his Dad was a complete waste of his time. He turned to leave but paused and looked back...
"Will you at least investigate the perpetrator?" He asked, hoping it would be looked into.
"No!" His father replied, slamming his heart into pieces as usual. "They disobeyed an order, death's the punishment," his father continued.
Kendrick resisted the urge to fling a vase at him as he walked out of the packhouse.
They were all going to die!
"Is he being serious? Why is he so stupid? Can't he see the signs?!!" A grey-haired woman exclaimed as she watched Kendrick walking away from the car with the rest of the group through a glass orb. "I've heard spiritually insensitive humans never heard of a stubborn and ignorant werewolf. How can he not see the blatant sign in front of him?" Another woman dressed in a grey cloak replied while mixing a potion at the side of the dark, thatched house. "What do we do? Do we leave him to continue the journey?" "We can't," the first lady replied with a frown. "He can't enter the blue mountain... Not yet." "And you know we can't do anything to him... We can only warn him from afar or mess with the car... We are not allowed to mess with people, or else the restraints will be activated." "I'm not sure why you are so concerned about him," the last woman, who had been sitting alone in the middle of the room, knitting, replied without looking up at the other two. "At the end of the day, he's
"There's someone between those trees... Are you trying to play with me?" Kendrick asked as Caspian insisted on not seeing anyone where he was looking. "I should ask you that, ah!" Caspian replied as he glared at Kendrick's serious face. "You said there's someone there, but there's nothing – just trees and bushes. Are you okay? Or are you stressed to the extent of seeing things?" Kendrick ignored him as he realised he was indeed unable to see the woman pointing at him. He narrowed his eyes, pursed his lips, and dug his hands into his pants as he stared back at the figure between the trees. The two maintained a staring contest without saying anything. Seeing that Kendrick was no longer paying attention to him, Caspian followed his line of sight but still couldn't see anyone. With a shrug of his shoulder, he turned back to join the rest of his team while leaving Kendrick alone. "What do you need?" Kendrick finally asked the figure, seeing how she made no attempt to leave. "Do you ha
"Considering my father's incompetence, one would think the elders would want him dead the most." "Well. Maybe?" Elder Lydia replied. "But we can't afford his death before he chooses his heir. He needs to see his heir before he does... To avoid problems." "As you know, the heir doesn't automatically go to the first son when he has more than one, and although the duel is important, his signature is also important." "The elders already held a meeting about this, I heard?" "You heard right, which is why we can't have him die before it is put into action," she explained. "The journey to the blue mountain takes three days and two nights if we go through the South route and back another three. Approximately seven days." "We can shorten that if you don't go with us," Caspian pointed out, and Lydia sighed. "I have to. I need to. And I really won't slow you down." "Well, it's decided; we leave in an hour. Go pack whatever is necessary – food, water and we will set out," Kendrick said, and
"We met again." Kayla chuckled as she ran into the frantic Kendrick walking out of the hospital. "We always seem to meet in odd places.""Are you okay?" She asked as she noticed Kendrick's dishevelled appearance. "You look... exhausted.""I am," Kendrick breathed out. "Are you here for your sister? She hasn't healed?""Oh, she has healed... The doctor kind of picked up an interest in her. You know...her being unable to shift and all?" She chuckled. "He wanted to find the cause for it and why it was delayed... He said he's always been interested, and since we have nothing to lose, we agreed. I'm here for moral and emotional support," she explained with a smile, and Kendrick nodded. She stepped closer to him and held his hand while maintaining her smile. "You should take a rest... There will always be problems as long as we're living, and even though we can live longer than humans... We can also die under stress."Kendrick felt the tension in his shoulders ease as he looked into her eye
"What happened to him?!" Kendrick asked as Collon and the rest of the people who went with Alpha Elton rushed back into the Pack and directly to the Pack clinic with a bleeding Alpha Elton."He's wounded and bleeding, obviously," Collon replied."I can see that! I mean, why isn't he healing? What happened in the duel?""They cheated," Collon breathed out, his fist clenching tightly, but his eyes refused to meet Kendrick's as he stared at the wall before looking around the long clinic hallway. "Alpha Jones used wolfsbane on his claws.""That's a piece of...""Language, young man," Elder Ambrose warned. "It was our fault for thinking they would play fair. We should have checked all the boxes, seeing how their Pack has always been hostile towards ours.""I'm sure if you went with us, you would have checked, Beta Kendrick," Tobi, a warrior, added under his breath. "You were always that careful."The room fell silent as Collon glared at Tobi, his jaw tightening. Kendrick, however, didn’t t
The drive to the duelling location took about half an hour. Soon, the group arrived at a clearing surrounded by mountains and trees. As Alpha Elton got down from the car, he quickly noticed the Alpha of the Brown Fur Pack, Alpha Jones, standing at the forefront of his Pack members, looking smug with a smirk stretched across his face."Still as slow as ever, Elton," Jones called out, arms crossed and chest puffed.Ignoring his comment, Alpha Elton shrugged off his suit and handed it to Collon before walking up to Alpha Jones and the rest of the Brown Fur Pack with an expressionless face. "Well, the weaker one always has to do the waiting," he replied, his voice void of any emotion. "I hope you have gone through the return letter we sent?""Well, we have, and considering we will win this duel, I have nothing to worry about." Alpha Jones scoffed, "I'm just hoping you are not too stingy with the lands you'll give." "Hmm..." Alpha Elton scanned the crowd gathered and nodded. "Having blin
