Kendrick stormed out of the packhouse and moved to his house. He dressed up and drove to the pack's Academy. It was already full before he got in. He smiled at some students as they greeted him while he walked into the office.
Being the Alpha's Beta came with a lot of responsibility. He was sitting in his office when a female student walked in. She stood over a well 5'6 ft tall and had the longest hair he had ever seen.
She was new, he assured himself as he watched her walk to his table swaying her hips. She stood directly opposite him and gave him a mock bow.
"Hey Beta, what's up?" She drawled and he couldn't help but smile at the attempt to sound sexy. A look at her neck revealed she hadn't met her mate as it was without a mate mark.
"You're new?" He asked as he arranged files on his table.
She smoothed her short skirt with her hands and sat down on a chair.
"Just joined the pack."
Kendrick tried not to sigh, his Father had been accepting members of other packs despite warnings from their pack.
The last family he allowed in were from the third biggest pack. They had lied about their reason for leaving. The Alpha of the pack had gotten furious and killed ten of theirs.
Kendrick scratched the back of his head as he thought about the probability of the other pack being the ones killing his pack members. It was difficult to decide.
"How can I help you?" He asked, dragging his attention back to the lady in front of him.
"I was told to call you, the lessons are starting in a minute."
He nodded his head and looked at his watch, he'd been sitting for a while, he just entered, how come it was already time for the training?
Swallowing he stood up and walked out of the office, he waited till the lady came out before he locked his door.
"You smell different," she muttered as he walked towards the field.
He could hear catcalls as the students fought. He held the rails as he moved slowly, his eye on the lady in the circle.
He could recognize her as the daughter of the Gamma to the Alpha. She faced her opponent, balancing herself on her heels. Kendrick looked at the trainer in the box and smiled. It was going to be a tough one.
The lady beside him snorted and he turned to look at her face. Her hazel eyes were fixed as she held his gaze, her brown hair packed in a ponytail dropped as little curls on her forehead. Her lips were pursed together as she glared at him, annoyed that he ignored her comment.
"What did you say again?" He asked as he turned his attention back to the fight in the box.
"I said you smell different," she repeated
"I'm the Beta, it's normal that I smell different from other pack members," he muttered as he found a chair to sit on. She plopped in beside him and he couldn't help but wonder why she was staying glued to him.
"Will you teach me to fight?" She asked out of the blue.
She was distracting him, the fight had started in the box, he watched as Helen, the Gamma's daughter launched at her opponent, her opponent shifted and she landed her blows in the air. The opponent turned around, slamming her fists into Helen's stomach. She felt the impact as she staggered backwards.
The trainer blew her whistle loudly, giving Helen enough time to catch her breath before the battle continued.
Helen dabbed at her mouth, cleaning the sweat around her mouth. She looked at the crowd as if searching for a familiar face, she smiled as she spotted Kendrick, he smiled back and pumped his fist in the air, showing his support.
"Is she your mate?" The lady beside him asked again, frustration very evident in her voice.
"No!" He replied sadly.
He wished she was, he always had eyes for her since she joined the academy, she was older than the rest of her classmates but she was intelligent, smart and carried herself with dignity and respect. He had enjoyed every part of their training together, she was funny and learnt very fast.
He'd found himself looking forward to training with her. He knew she wasn't his mate but he loved her still. The fight had started again, Kendrick leaned forward as he kept his eyes on her.
She balanced watching her opponent's every move. Her opponent was fast, she moved too early giving her opponent an advantage, she moved towards her, placing her hands under Helen's armpit, she flipped her over.
Helen groaned as she landed heavily on the floor. A loud growl left her and she transformed into her wolf.
Kendrick's mouth parted softly as he watched. She howled and barged at her opponent before she could transform. She bit her on her neck, flipping her away with her teeth.
Her opponent fell to the ground, a hand to the bite on her neck which was now bleeding profusely.
Helen charged at her again, hitting her face with her huge wolf head, her opponent staggered back as she began to cough up blood.
Kendrick was standing now. Why wasn't she transforming? Was she planning to get herself killed? She stood up again and walked back to the box where Helen was growling softly, blood in her mouth.
Her opponent balanced again and formed her hands into fists, facing Helen's huge wolf. Was she crazy?
Kendrick raced down to the box but not before Helen collided into her, tackling her to the wall, she bit her leg, spitting the flesh out as she howled.
The opponent turned white as she bled out, she was losing so much blood.
Why wasn't the trainer stopping them?
Kendrick stepped into the box at the same time Helen made to bite her again. Kendrick blocked her with his arm and winced as the pain shot through his arm.
Realizing what had happened, Helen transformed back to her human self and grabbed Kendrick's arm, muttering apologies as the aiders ran to the box with stretchers.
"Is he being serious? Why is he so stupid? Can't he see the signs?!!" A grey-haired woman exclaimed as she watched Kendrick walking away from the car with the rest of the group through a glass orb. "I've heard spiritually insensitive humans never heard of a stubborn and ignorant werewolf. How can he not see the blatant sign in front of him?" Another woman dressed in a grey cloak replied while mixing a potion at the side of the dark, thatched house. "What do we do? Do we leave him to continue the journey?" "We can't," the first lady replied with a frown. "He can't enter the blue mountain... Not yet." "And you know we can't do anything to him... We can only warn him from afar or mess with the car... We are not allowed to mess with people, or else the restraints will be activated." "I'm not sure why you are so concerned about him," the last woman, who had been sitting alone in the middle of the room, knitting, replied without looking up at the other two. "At the end of the day, he's
"There's someone between those trees... Are you trying to play with me?" Kendrick asked as Caspian insisted on not seeing anyone where he was looking. "I should ask you that, ah!" Caspian replied as he glared at Kendrick's serious face. "You said there's someone there, but there's nothing – just trees and bushes. Are you okay? Or are you stressed to the extent of seeing things?" Kendrick ignored him as he realised he was indeed unable to see the woman pointing at him. He narrowed his eyes, pursed his lips, and dug his hands into his pants as he stared back at the figure between the trees. The two maintained a staring contest without saying anything. Seeing that Kendrick was no longer paying attention to him, Caspian followed his line of sight but still couldn't see anyone. With a shrug of his shoulder, he turned back to join the rest of his team while leaving Kendrick alone. "What do you need?" Kendrick finally asked the figure, seeing how she made no attempt to leave. "Do you ha
"Considering my father's incompetence, one would think the elders would want him dead the most." "Well. Maybe?" Elder Lydia replied. "But we can't afford his death before he chooses his heir. He needs to see his heir before he does... To avoid problems." "As you know, the heir doesn't automatically go to the first son when he has more than one, and although the duel is important, his signature is also important." "The elders already held a meeting about this, I heard?" "You heard right, which is why we can't have him die before it is put into action," she explained. "The journey to the blue mountain takes three days and two nights if we go through the South route and back another three. Approximately seven days." "We can shorten that if you don't go with us," Caspian pointed out, and Lydia sighed. "I have to. I need to. And I really won't slow you down." "Well, it's decided; we leave in an hour. Go pack whatever is necessary – food, water and we will set out," Kendrick said, and
"We met again." Kayla chuckled as she ran into the frantic Kendrick walking out of the hospital. "We always seem to meet in odd places.""Are you okay?" She asked as she noticed Kendrick's dishevelled appearance. "You look... exhausted.""I am," Kendrick breathed out. "Are you here for your sister? She hasn't healed?""Oh, she has healed... The doctor kind of picked up an interest in her. You know...her being unable to shift and all?" She chuckled. "He wanted to find the cause for it and why it was delayed... He said he's always been interested, and since we have nothing to lose, we agreed. I'm here for moral and emotional support," she explained with a smile, and Kendrick nodded. She stepped closer to him and held his hand while maintaining her smile. "You should take a rest... There will always be problems as long as we're living, and even though we can live longer than humans... We can also die under stress."Kendrick felt the tension in his shoulders ease as he looked into her eye
"What happened to him?!" Kendrick asked as Collon and the rest of the people who went with Alpha Elton rushed back into the Pack and directly to the Pack clinic with a bleeding Alpha Elton."He's wounded and bleeding, obviously," Collon replied."I can see that! I mean, why isn't he healing? What happened in the duel?""They cheated," Collon breathed out, his fist clenching tightly, but his eyes refused to meet Kendrick's as he stared at the wall before looking around the long clinic hallway. "Alpha Jones used wolfsbane on his claws.""That's a piece of...""Language, young man," Elder Ambrose warned. "It was our fault for thinking they would play fair. We should have checked all the boxes, seeing how their Pack has always been hostile towards ours.""I'm sure if you went with us, you would have checked, Beta Kendrick," Tobi, a warrior, added under his breath. "You were always that careful."The room fell silent as Collon glared at Tobi, his jaw tightening. Kendrick, however, didn’t t
The drive to the duelling location took about half an hour. Soon, the group arrived at a clearing surrounded by mountains and trees. As Alpha Elton got down from the car, he quickly noticed the Alpha of the Brown Fur Pack, Alpha Jones, standing at the forefront of his Pack members, looking smug with a smirk stretched across his face."Still as slow as ever, Elton," Jones called out, arms crossed and chest puffed.Ignoring his comment, Alpha Elton shrugged off his suit and handed it to Collon before walking up to Alpha Jones and the rest of the Brown Fur Pack with an expressionless face. "Well, the weaker one always has to do the waiting," he replied, his voice void of any emotion. "I hope you have gone through the return letter we sent?""Well, we have, and considering we will win this duel, I have nothing to worry about." Alpha Jones scoffed, "I'm just hoping you are not too stingy with the lands you'll give." "Hmm..." Alpha Elton scanned the crowd gathered and nodded. "Having blin
