We were a few drinks in, and my inhibitions were falling slowly. I found myself moving to the music at the high-top table we were at. A few others came and went but the three of us kept in our trio mainly. Cleo was ready to dance and so was Prue. The great thing about Bob’s bar was the juke box.

“We need to get the dancefloor going.” Prue said.

People didn’t often fill the dance floor until nearly 9pm once they were sufficiently drunk enough. We were only a little after 8pm and I knew if anyone could start the dance floor rush, it was Cleo and Prue. The juke box ran through a mix of songs unless you requested a specific one.

“I’ll go see what playlist Bob has on the cards for tonight.”

Another great thing was Bob ensured he kept the playlists on the juke box changing so that no one ever got bored of the selection. A few moments later, Cleo came rushing back.

“Guess what,” she bounced at my side.

“What?” I shook my head at her.

“It’s the country play list!” She exclaimed.

  • Shadows & Whispers   Chapter 138

On Sunday, I dropped the charity things off at a local shop. They helped empty my car and were grateful for my donations. I had made the decision that no matter how I felt, I needed to be back at work on Monday. I needed a normal routine to help me work through things. I knew this would come with a barrage of questions, but I would handle it with the help of Cleo. Cleo was dead set against me going to work on Monday morning when I texted her, but she knew that there was no use in arguing with me.I had rested most of the day on Sunday and was feeling as refreshed as I could. The stress element was not going away anytime soon, so I had to ensure I was fully rested and looking after myself in every other way as the doctor suggested. I walked into work on Monday morning with my head held high, my body flooded with nerves, and a slight tremor in my hand with emotions. One thing I knew which helped was that Damian would not be there. People crowded me as I stepped into the office asking

My phone buzzed with a message from Cleo asking if I was alright and if she could come over. I agreed but asked her to give me a few hours. I needed a little time alone after Damian dropped me off. There were so many questions circling my mind, I decided to start writing them down. It was the only way I could remember them all. Some seemed silly as I wrote them down, but they were in my head for a reason. My stomach was growling at me as I had not eaten all day. I headed to the kitchen and pulled something easy together. Once I was full, I placed myself in front of the TV to try and distract myself. Tears started falling without warning. My heart ached for Damian. It felt like a breakup but on a whole new scale. I had never experienced that feeling before. My mind drifted back to the baby. My life has forever changed. There was no doubt or question in my mind over whether I was keeping the baby. It was a part of me, no matter what, all that mattered was raising this baby. With or

We walked and walked, until I could walk no more. The house was enormous. We had only made it through a small portion of the rooms. Damian walked me to the library and took a seat. I hadn’t spoken a word since we arrived. I couldn’t believe what was in front of me. “You’re very quiet.” He observed. “Is this where you live?” “No, not permanently. I come here when I need an escape. Like the cabin I took you to.” “The cabin is yours?” He nodded and his words that evening echoed in my mind. He basically told me he owned the place, but I didn’t believe him. “You told me you owned it, but I didn’t believe you.” He chuckled, “I did but I understand why you didn’t believe me.” “I asked you to take me to your home.” I sighed in frustration.“This is one of them. I don’t want to hold anything back from you. I have three homes, this, the cabin, and my house in the city.”I was struggling to wrap my head around the information. “This was left for me by my grandparents, they were gif

As I awoke to an empty bed, I checked the time on my phone. It was 12:34 p.m. I rubbed my eyes, cleared my sleep from them, and stretched out. Although, I’m still feeling weak, I didn’t feel as exhausted as before.I headed to the bathroom, washed up, and dressed. The house felt warm but there was no noise. As I entered the living room, there was no sign of Damian. Part of me started to wonder if I had dreamed of him coming over. I walked towards the kitchen and could hear a faint voice in the distance. I headed towards the patio doors to see Damian pacing the garden on his mobile. I had no idea who he was talking to, but I could tell he didn’t look happy. I slid the door open quietly and watched him pace back and forth. If he kept pacing the way he was, I would have a trench in my garden, which made me laugh at the thought. My chuckle caught his attention, and he quickly ended the call.“How are you feeling?” He asked as he walked over.“Bare foot and pregnant.” I laughed. He looke

Although I knew what was coming, I continued through the broken glass and onto the clear path on the other side. This time no more blocks appeared in front of me. The path came to an end with no more forks. Instead, Prue appeared in front of me. “This is where your choices should have led you. Alone, unloved, unwanted.”Her words hit me like ice shards. I looked down and cradled my stomach. “Your baby would not exist if you had turned away from me.” Damian voice was behind me.I spun to find him standing in front of me. I watched him wearily as he reached out and placed his hands around mine onto my stomach. I felt a strange sensation and looked down to see my stomach large, like I was 9 months pregnant. His hands held mine as we felt the baby move and kick around.“Your choice now is whether to do this alone or with me.”I looked up to see tears in his eyes.Knock, knock, knock.I was pulled from my dream with tears running down my cheeks. Scrambling out of the covers, to look do

The doctor returned a few hours later. It was a little before 1am, but I was discharged and free to go. All my tests had come back clear. I just needed rest and they agreed that I would be better off at home for that. Cleo called me a taxi while I was getting myself sorted and discharged. She helped me outside and got into the taxi.“Thank you.” I smiled.“I will come and see you in the morning.” Cleo promised. The taxi driver warned me over the price of the fare, but I said it was alright. I didn’t mind. I just needed to get home. I checked my phone, which by some miracle, had not been damaged when I collapsed. There was a message from Cleo to say she had arrived back at the party and was ensuring she took her time informing everyone I was alright. There was also a message from Damian.‘I cannot say how sorry I am for everything. I just need to know that both you and the baby are alright.’My heart welled with feelings when reading the message. Everything was just so confusing. My
