Chapter 2

Author: Wedding Seven
The car drove through an enormous gated luxury community before finally stopping in front of a villa.

The moment the car door opened, a woman in a flowing white dress hurried over. She had on a pitiful expression, and her eyes were red. She looked fragile and harmless. This had to be the "kind and gentle Barbara Bush" Francis had mentioned.

Barbara crouched down and pulled me into a tight embrace. Her voice trembled with emotion, while her tears fell on cue. "Ethan, my poor child. You're finally home. From now on, I'll be your mom. I'll spend the rest of my life loving you…"

The heartfelt display moved Francis deeply. Standing nearby, he repeatedly exclaimed that he had married such a good woman.

I stood stiffly and let Barbara hold me.

I remembered the advice Carol had given me before leaving the orphanage. "Ethan, hug people more. Talk more. Tell them what you're thinking. That's how people grow to like you."

Fine. Hug we should, then. Slowly, I lifted my arms and wrapped them around Barbara's neck.

But just as Francis headed to the trunk to grab his suitcase and wasn't watching, Barbara's hand on my back suddenly moved toward the soft flesh beneath my arm. Her fingers clamped down on my skin, then twisted hard.

Pain shot through my arm, but I gritted my teeth and didn't make a sound.

Barbara leaned in close to my ear and whispered through clenched teeth, "You little bastard! You picked a great time to come back and fight for the inheritance, huh? If you don't do exactly as I say, I'll make sure you regret ever setting foot in this house!"

The vicious malice in her tone was a stark contrast from her sweet, innocent face.

She wanted to challenge me, huh? A faint smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. My eyes turned cold.

A blade I used for sharpening pencils slipped out from my right sleeve. With a nimble flick of my wrist, the blade disappeared into my palm.

With a swish, the blade sliced cleanly across Barbara's waist, cutting through her white dress all the way down to her upper thigh.

If she hadn't felt the sudden chill against her stomach and instinctively recoiled, I could've sliced open her stomach right then and there.

"Ah!" Barbara shrieked and collapsed to the ground, clutching her ripped dress. Her face was deathly pale as she stared at me.

Hearing the commotion, Francis spun around. "What happened? Barb, are you okay?"

Just as Barbara opened her mouth to answer, I lifted up my sleeve to reveal the ugly purple bruise with nail marks on my arm where she'd just pinched me.

I didn't cry. I simply looked at Barbara with an icy, guarded glare and asked Francis in a hoarse voice, "Dad, is this what you meant when you said nobody would hurt me anymore? Why did Barbara pinch me? I don't want to be sent back to the orphanage again."

My fists were clenched tightly. My small body was tense with vigilance.

Francis' gaze landed on the bruise. His expression changed instantly. He turned sharply toward Barbara, suspicion flashing across his face.

Barbara panicked. Forcing down the fear and resentment in her eyes, she immediately put on a wounded smile. "Francis, you've got it all wrong! That must be an old bruise Ethan got from another kid at the orphanage.

"He was trying to hug me just now and accidentally tore my dress with a toy. The poor child just got here and feels insecure. He's just looking for attention and reassurance…"

Francis looked at me and sighed heavily. The suspicion faded from his face, replaced by deep sympathy. "Come on, Ethan. Let's put some ointment on that."

He scooped me into his arms and carried me toward the house. Without even glancing back, he said to Barbara, "Go change your clothes. We'll bring Ethan to meet Emily in a bit."

Resting against Francis' broad shoulder, I withdrew my cold stare. I looked over his shoulder to see Barbara climbing to her feet and flashed her the friendliest smile imaginable.

Round one: She lost.

After Francis and I returned home, Emily stood in front of me with tears in her eyes. Her hands were clasped together. After standing there for a long period of time, she finally managed to say, "I'm sorry, Ethan… I'm too useless. I let that bad woman pick on me all the time, and I almost got you bitten by that dog."Through her tears, she added, "From now on, I'll eat more so I can grow big and strong. Then, I'll be able to protect you."I stared at her weak and timid expression without a hint of emotion on my face. Then, I reached out and pinched her chubby cheeks before giving them a hard tug."Shut up, and stop crying," I said coldly. "You just need to remember this. You're mine. If I haven't given you permission to die, not even the Grim Reaper will be able to take you away from me."Instead of feeling frightened, Emily broke into a smile and nodded firmly. She looked as if she finally found someone she could rely on.…Later that night, Francis asked me to head to his stud

Francis' statements hit Barbara like a bolt from the blue."Y-You knew? No—that's not true. I can explain, Francis…" she cried.Ignoring the pain she was in due to the miscarriage, she tried to sit upright and grab onto Francis' clothes. But to her dismay, he swatted her hand away in disgust."Every night, I glance at that fake face of yours and feel sick to my stomach!" he spat, not bothering to hide the contempt in his voice. As he adjusted the cuff on his sleeve, he continued, "Did you think that you could replace Wendy just by copying her appearance and the way she spoke? You can't hold a candle to her."As I watched everything unfold from the sidelines, I suddenly found the situation slightly amusing. As it turned out, the person who was the best at pretending in this household wasn't Barbara or me. It was my seemingly devoted and sophisticated father."Since you're so desperate for answers, I'll make sure you understand everything before you die." At the snap of his fin

Before I could finish speaking, I dodged Barbara's hands as she tried to grab me.The moment she lunged forward and lost her balance, I stuck my foot out and gave her a hard shove in the back.Barbara let out a chilling scream as she went tumbling down the steep staircase. The sound of bones striking against the hard marble floors echoed through the spacious villa. It was delightful to listen to.Barbara rolled all the way down before her body crashed onto the very bottom of the stairs. I, on the other hand, stood at the top of the staircase and looked down at her from above. Her entire body was twitching as she lay curled up on the floor in pain. Moments later, thick, dark blood began to gush out from beneath her dress. The silence in the villa was soon broken by the sound of ambulance sirens. In the hospital's VIP room, the overwhelming scent of disinfectant did very little to mask the stench of blood in the air. Barbara lay on the bed. Her face was as white as a sheet, and

I believed in returning favors. Barbara wanted my sister dead. So, it was only fair that the unborn thing inside her suffered the same fate. During the day, I wandered aimlessly around the vast backyard behind the villa like a bored child. The Sterling estate had been extravagantly landscaped. To give the grounds an exotic feel, all kinds of unusual plants had been planted throughout the yard.In one secluded corner, I came across a large patch of oleander. In a shaded area behind a rockery, I also found a medicinal plant I recognized from an old, battered book in the doctor's office at the orphanage. The doctor had once told me that the plant was extremely dangerous for pregnant women. According to him, even the smallest amount could end up killing the baby in the womb. Using a small hand shovel, I dug up several of its roots. Afterward, I picked some leaves off of one of the oleander plants.Every morning, Barbara would drink a prenatal smoothie prepared by a nutritionist

I stared at the moldy bread on my plate and took a bite without batting an eye.The mold on the bread didn't bother me. After all, at my third foster home, I had to fight dogs for scraps from their bowls.Emily, on the other hand, didn't feel the same way. She was a pampered little crybaby. After taking just one bite, she threw up. Moments later, she burst into tears while she clutched her empty stomach. Her crying got on my nerves. So, in the middle of the night, I used a piece of wire to pick the electronic lock on the kitchen door. Then, I cooked her two expensive steaks. While I was at it, I dumped all of Barbara's expensive beauty supplements down the sink. The next morning, I found a dead rat in my bed. Its intestines were spilling out of its body, and the stench was absolutely revolting. Barbara stood just outside the door, breathing heavily. If I had to guess, she was probably waiting eagerly for me to let out a terrified scream.I pulled back the covers and picked up t

The moment Barbara saw Francis, she immediately covered her arms, which were covered in whip marks, and burst into tears. Pointing at me, she cried out hysterically, "Francis! You're finally home! Ethan is a sociopath! While you were away, he locked me in a dog cage in the basement and tortured me for days. Look at these injuries! He did this to me!"Francis hurried inside. He looked at the undeniable, horrifying whip marks all over Barbara's body, then at me, a six-year-old who barely stood up to his waist. There were still clear red marks around my neck from where Barbara had just strangled me.Shock and doubt filled Francis' face. How could a six-year-old child possibly have locked an adult in a basement and tortured her? But there was no denying the injuries covering Barbara's body.I immediately rolled my eyes. Then, I let my body topple backward, pretending to pass out from exhaustion into Francis' arms."Ethan!" Terrified, Francis scooped me up and shouted toward the doo
