Chapter 02
"Hi" Helena said, soft-spoken she was, just like her husband. You barely hear her. Her gaze never left him, neither did his. Barry coughed silently breaking the awkward atmosphere, or not as neither of them moved nor looked away. "We'll leave you two to talk" He said and motioned to his butler who hurried to him to help him up. Gianna and the driver excused themselves too. "Hi" Helena said once again, with the same pretty smile splattered on her face. She hadn't changed, she looked pretty as ever, her brunette hair styled in a bun, a red lipstick plastered prettily on her lips, she was styled in a red short gown which rested dangerously just above her knees, matching it with a black louboutin. She was just like before, nothing about her had changed. Red, she loved red so much, she still seems to do so even now. And that pretty little smile she puts on her face everytime, even when she's mad, or sad, or annoyed, she had exactly the same one on. Her pretty little manipulative smile. The one he fell easily for in the past. Her, whom he loved so much, even after she abandoned him exactly three months after they had gotten married, without a word. "H..hi" He couldn't find the right words and that placed a smile on her face. Just like she liked him, easily swayed by her. Her smile grew wider as she walked slowly to him, each stride matching perfectly and the clanks of her steps making loud sounds against the marbled floor. She hugged him slowly, then tighten her arms around his body. "I missed you" She muttered, shutting her eyes as she leaned in more. "Why aren't.. " she wasn't allowed to finish her sentence when she was yanked away from him. He yanked her away. She raised her brows at him in confusion. "What are you doing?" She questioned. "Why are you here?" Kenzo asked, now composed, his hands slipping effortlessly into his pants. "Why do you think? I missed you" Helena said, in smiles, as she adjusted her stance. **Seven Years Ago** "Do you take Kenzo Alfredo as your lawfully wedded husband?" The priest read. "I do" Helena responded in smiles, dressed gracefully in her beautiful million dollar wedding dress, facing Kenzo who was also in his wedding suit. They both looked happy and fulfilled, they were finally getting married after three years of dating. The wedding hall was filled with hundreds of guests, rich folks from the business world from all over the world were present to witness the union of two of the biggest business folks in the world. Alfredo Enterprise had just been accredited to Kenzo as the one and only heir, the number one construction company in America, and Helena was about to be passed on the title of the heir to the Laurent Enterprise, one of the biggest Marketing company in Canada. Her goal was to make the Company the biggest in Canada, and she had her plans, all she needed was to be in control and made the heir, something her dad was time stalling on. He wanted her to get married and give her a grandson, only then would he give her the title. So, this wedding was a stepping stone to her goal. "Do you take Helena Laurent as your lawfully wedded wife" The priest's voice brought her out of her trance. "Yes, I do" Kenzo responded, his eyes never left hers for once. Despite showing little to no emotions, he was infact the happiest human that day. Kenzo had never been a lover boy nor had he dated anyone, till he met Helena. She fell first, but he fell harder. Since then, it had always been his dream to get married to her. He had proposed twice before this and got rejected, she wasn't ready yet is what she would say, until four months ago when he decided to try his luck again, and to his utmost surprise, she said yes. And right now, at this moment, she was going to be his forever. "I now pronounce you two husband and wife" "You may now kiss the bride" The priest concluded. *** "Where are you going?" Kenzo questioned alarmingly. It was just a month after their wedding, he had just woken up from his sleep to see his wife packing her luggages. Helena spared him no response as she continued packing her stuffs. "Helena." Kenzo yanked her up gently, making her face him. "What are you doing?"He questioned, confused. Helena let out a forced smile while finally giving him attention. "i need to go home" She muttered. "Home?" Kenzo pressed on further. "My dad's sick" Helena muttered, as a drop of tear dropped down her eyes alarming Kenzo immediately. "What's wrong? What happened?" He asked urgently. Helena pushed him off gently. "I don't know yet, but I have to return home immediately" she resumed packing her stuffs. And that was the last time she had ever come back into his home. It was an excuse. Her father was never sick as far as he knew, she just wanted to leave. Till this day, he wondered what he ever did wrong, why she even accepted to marry him if she was just going to leave a month after their wedding. They had dated for three years, always loved and cherished each other, despite both their busy schedules, they always made time for each other. He always wondered what had changed between them and why things turned out this way. The last time he had seen her was two years ago at a dinner party for CEOs *** Two Years Ago *** "Sir, we're here" Gianna announced to Kenzo whose eyes were closed as he enjoyed the night ride before they got to the dinner party location. It was an annual party for CEOs all over the world, which he barely attended, this was the second time he would be attending, and at both times was for business deals. He was trying to bring in an important investor into their company. Kenzo opened his eyes and got out of the car with his driver opening the door for him. He walked into the venue with his guards behind him, exchanged pleasantries with some other big business men and women before having his seat with a business man friend of his while keeping an eye on his potential investor. "How do I get to him, Gianna?" Kenzo asked while sipping from his beer. Gianna straightened up and leaned down to whisper something to him. He hummed in response while nodding his head at her idea. "Good" He commended. Gianna let out a little smile as Kenzo got on his feet and they both walked towards the woman who seemed to be discussing with some others. "Hello there, Mi Ladies" Kenzo slipped in, cutting off their conversation. They turned to look at him, a smile forming on their face immediately. It was no doubt Kenzo was really popular among the ladies, the business women not excluded. The potential investor herself, Karen Laine was a 47 years old woman who owned one of the biggest marketing company in Canada. Kenzo needed their partnership as they had been considering opening a branch in Canada itself. "To what do I owe this honor of having the Alfredo heir interested in starting a conversation in our midst" Karen said in smiles as Kenzo brought her hands forward, gently like the gentleman he is and placed a kiss on the back of her hand, earning him a light blush on her cheeks. "Just decided to say hello to the ladies, is that so wrong?" Kenzo said with a smile, revealing his two sided dimples which sent another blush to the ladies around him. "I see? Could have thought you were eyeing me as an investor in your new branch that is opening soon?" She said with a knowing smile. Kenzo let out a smirk. "How did you know?" He said, still smiling. Karen let out a chuckle. "I know lot of things, Alfredo" "Hmm?" Kenzo let out a smirk. The ladies around them passed knowing glances. "Ooh, what's going on here?" "Could Mr. Alfredo be interested in Mrs Karen?" They all let out a laugh. "Of course not, how dare I compete with Mr. Laine" Kenzo shook his head and Karen smiled. "No, of course, I'm too old for him, and he has a wife too, would rather not delve into that. Helena can be a scary woman" She said with a knowing smile, and everyone went quiet. Karen didn't break her knowing stare on Kenzo. She knew. Everyone knew. Rumors had it they had fallen off. Some said they got a divorce and didn't want to inform the public yet. Some said Helena had another lover. Kenzo let out a small smile. "That's.. The ladies passed a secret look to each other. "Speaking of your wife.." One of them started, cutting Kenzo off. Karen straightened her shoulders liking where the conversation was heading. "Doesn't she own one of the biggest marketing company in Canada, the same country as Karen's, why not partner with her? I mean, her company is infact rumored to be the biggest, so why Karen?" She questioned knowingly. They all knew the answer to the question or they thought they did. They didn't get along well so of course he had to find someone other than his wife. Karen decided to chip in. "Of course Kenzo, why me and not your dearest wife?" She asked with a knowing smirk. Gianna tried to chip in but Kenzo stopped her. He let out a smile. "Well.." "Oh why are you all making a big deal out of such a small matter?" A voice suddenly came from behind.Chapter 46Sleep With Me, Dear HusbandThe door clicked softly as Helena stepped into the apartment, her fingers curling around the edge of the frame. She hadn’t been here in weeks. The familiar scent; a blend of cedarwood and something uniquely Kenzo, washed over her like a warm tide. Home. She took a breath and moved further inside, her feet cushioned by the plush rugs he’d added since her last stay. Her gaze scanned the space: clean, quiet, lived-in. Yet, something felt… different. The lights had been dimmed, replaced by the soft flicker of candles spread across the room. Gentle instrumental music played in the background, and the faint scent of fresh lilies hung in the air. Her favorite.“Kenzo?” she called out, voice still a little hoarse from recovery. No answer. She took another step forward and spotted the low table in the living room. A small covered dish sat in the center, next to a bottle of chilled sparkling grape juice and two glasses. Her brows lifted. Then she saw it; a
Chapter 45Peace and PromisesThe soft hum of the hospital room lingered in the early morning light. Rays of sun filtered through the blinds, casting faint stripes across the white walls and Helena’s peaceful face. Her chest rose and fell in a rhythm that Kenzo had come to memorize over the past few weeks; slow, fragile, but steady.Kenzo sat slouched in the chair beside her bed, his hand still loosely wrapped around hers from the night before. The crumpled letter lay folded in his jacket pocket, though its words echoed relentlessly in his mind. She stirred. His eyes snapped open, posture straightening instantly. Her fingers twitched beneath his, and then her lashes fluttered. Slowly, she blinked her way into consciousness, the pale amber light warming her skin.“Hey,” she whispered, her voice weak but familiar.Kenzo leaned closer. “Hey.”For a second, neither said anything. There was no need to.Her gaze drifted to their joined hands. “You stayed.”“Of course I stayed.”Helena’s lip
Chapter 44Her Goodbye LetterThe room was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of evening seeping through sheer curtains. The machines by Helena’s bedside beeped with slow precision, each pulse a quiet reminder of her fragility. She was resting, finally, after a grueling round of treatment. Her breathing had steadied, but her frame still looked too delicate against the white sheets.Kenzo sat in the corner, arms resting on his knees, head bowed. He hadn’t meant to find the letter. It had fallen from between the pages of one of her old sketchbooks, the one tucked into her suitcase that Gianna had dropped off earlier. At first, he thought it was just another set of notes. She often wrote when she couldn’t sleep. But the second he saw his name in her handwriting, just his name on the front of a sealed envelope, his chest clenched. To Kenzo, in case I don’t get the chance to say it in person. He had stared at it for a full minute before peeling it open, hands trembling. Now, letter in hand,
Chapter 43The Last StandThe conference room was brighter than Helena remembered.Glass walls let the midday sun spill across the sleek marble floors, casting sharp lines and reflections. Her company’s emblem gleamed on the far wall, once a symbol of pride. Today, it felt heavier, like a name she was about to surrender.Helena sat at the head of the long oval table, papers stacked neatly before her, fingers clasped to still their tremble. Around her sat the board of directors, her department heads, and a few key shareholders. Aaron’s seat was conspicuously filled, though his posture leaned back in smug anticipation.Kenzo stood by the door.He wasn’t here as a businessman or a representative. He was here for her. Just her.The hum of low conversation faded as Helena stood.“Thank you all for being here,” she began, her voice clear but soft. “This meeting wasn’t scheduled, but it is necessary.”Her eyes swept the room. Many of these faces had doubted her return. Some still did. But it
Chapter 42Confronting the TruthKenzo barely slept. The night had dragged into the kind of dawn that felt more like dusk. The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and anxiety. Helena had drifted in and out of sleep, murmuring now and then, but she hadn’t said much else.He stayed beside her until the morning light began to cut through the blinds, casting pale gold across her still figure. His fingers had remained curled loosely around hers, but his mind was elsewhere, swirling, clawing at the puzzle she refused to let him solve.Something was wrong.More than just exhaustion. More than fainting. And he needed answers.By mid-morning, he stepped out of the room, giving himself space to think. Or maybe to breathe. The hospital’s side lobby was quiet. He called Alec.“Come to the hospital,” Kenzo said flatly. “Bring Gianna. Now.”Alec and Gianna arrived within the hour. Kenzo was already waiting in one of the consultation rooms, pacing. When they stepped inside, he didn’t waste a secon
Chapter 41Lines CrossedThe air inside the event hall buzzed with anticipation. Journalists, executives, and stakeholders filled the marble space, camera lights blinking like stars. Kenzo’s company was unveiling its latest eco-conscious skyscraper project, and Helena had played a silent but powerful hand in organizing the event. Even after everything, after the quiet days apart and the unanswered calls—she had followed through on her promise to help him redeem the company’s image. She stood by the stage, just off to the side, dressed in a sleek cream pantsuit that contrasted the deep green of the backdrop. Her heels were planted firm, shoulders squared, smile composed. No one could tell that her legs ached, that her breathing was shallow, that she hadn’t slept the night before. She wouldn’t let them see. From the other side of the room, Kenzo’s eyes caught hers for the briefest second. He wasn’t supposed to be looking at her, but he was. Not with warmth, just with guarded curiosity.
