“Don’t come close," Emilia said, stepping backwards. "I'm not a beast, Emilia.” I explained, wondering why I needed to clear this out. “Don’t step closer, please." She pleaded in a whisper. Fear written all over her. “You almost killed her if I didn’t intervene." I pleaded with her all the way from my study to her room. I stepped closer, but she backed away till she was braced up against the wall. She shut her eyes tightly. “Don’t touch me, Adrain; you are evil." Her voice shook in terror. I settled in front of her. “Is that who you see me as?" But Emilia shut her eyes tightly. I wished she could open it and face me. So our eyes can meet, and then I will make her understand I wasn’t a beast. I never killed without reason, a very strong reason at that. “Please open your eyes, Emy," I pleaded. She shook her head. “Go away, Adrain; you almost killed her." "But I didn't; you didn’t see me do it.” "Just go," she said and opened her eyes. “I wouldn’t want to kill her if she didn’t do something terrible." She let out a low chuckle. “Something terrible? Because she left some unknown journal in my room. Is that what you call terrible?" If only she knew the gravity of her going through the journal. I was literally angry and pissed that she almost went through it. I really didn’t know why I cared about her finding out. But I didn’t want her to; she would get pissed and might even end up not speaking to me again. "Listen, Emilia, there is more to that journal than just it being a journal.” She gulped. "So tell me,” she folded her arms around her chest. "Tell me what’s in it that makes it more than a journal.” “Everything in it. Everything!” I said and stepped away from her. She looked at me like I had suddenly gone insane. “Charlotte?" She smiled. “Yes, Charlotte, because that is the exact name written on it. She hurried over to where I stood now and held my hands. "Tell me, Adrain," she started, her voice filled with emotion. "Who is Charlotte Evertone?” Our eyes locked for a moment, and I could see the pain and confusion in them. She really wanted to find out who she is. I slipped my hand away from her grip. “Charlotte is none of your business, Emilia; just let the name rest." She nodded for seconds, then stepped away from me again. “You can leave now, Adrain.” She ordered. “See, Em…" "Just get the hell out!" She cut in, her voice filled with rage. It was of no use to argue further, so I turned and headed to the door. I slammed the door of my room hard and slumped on my bed. I didn’t know why I felt this sort of guilt for not telling Emilia the truth. And this was actually the first time someone has ever stopped me from getting someone killed. I never made an attempt to use my sword and stopped halfway, not even when my mum pleaded. I sighed heavily in frustration, confusion taking a hold on me. I felt a bit of relief when Austin called me from outside. “Alpha." His voice cut through the air. “Come in, Austin," I replied, still lying on my bed. Autin stepped in and shut the door. "Alpha, the elders are waiting. The death of another omega had occurred." “What?" I said and rose from my bed. "Death of an omega?” I queried, unsure of what I just heard. Austin nodded. "Yes, Alpha, an omega was confirmed dead. And the elders are waiting in your council room.” He bowed. “But how?" I asked no one in particular. “Was the curse not supposed to end after Emilia?" Austin shook his head. "Remember what the priestess said: you have to mark her and mate with her. Her presence alone doesn’t just end it." I stared at Austin in disbelief. “You should know better, Austin. You think I will mark a human being as my mate or even mate with her?" I chuckled dryly. "I would do no such thing, Austin." I spat and stood up. “You can’t just finalise things that way, Alpha. The priestess made it clear. Making her your Luna without mating with her is as good as if she were never here.” I stepped closer to Austin. "It's still the same thing, Austin; finding out she was my mate and making her my Luna should avert the curse. “This very omega died out of normal circumstances. It isn’t the curse. Not it.” Austin scoffed like I was saying something that made no sense. “You aren’t serious right now, Alpha. An omega just died; who knows who might be the next?" "You can leave Austin.” I sat back on my bed. “What do you mean?" Austin said, a confused expression on his face. “I said you should leave and dismiss the council of elders too.” I lay back on my bed and closed my eyes, already drained from the events of the day. I opened my eyes after hearing the door slam shut.~ Emilia ~“Tell me more about it, Ivy. How long do the guards stay up at night or even in the morning? Tell me everything you know about it." I smiled and pointed to the couch for her to sit on while I moved to my bed.Ivy hesitated for a while before sitting. “The pack is heavily guarded every single hour of the day, both day and night. The general commander is in charge of assigning each guard to their duty post. And no one leaves the main pack gate without the order of the Alpha.” I nodded, all she was saying sinking in. “And about night, Luna, they guard also at night; the pack never goes an hour without the guards in their usual position, unless the Alpha says otherwise.”I wanted to press further, to ask even deeper questions, but I wasn’t sure it would go down well. It might stir up suspicion from her or even Adrain when he might have inquired about my whereabouts tomorrow. “I will need your help tomorrow, Ivy, but I will get you at that time. You can leave now." Ivy stoo
~Adrain~I ignored Charlotte and unlocked the drawer of the desk and began sorting the files.I searched all through but couldn’t find it. Losing this file would cost me a lot. I stopped the search and stood still.I was certain I left the file here at my penthouse. And no one has access to this place but just I and Charlotte.I turned to her; she was still pacing in the room. Her arms folded on her chest. She stopped, seeing my lingering gaze, and walked to where I was. She zipped down the jacket, pulling a file from its side.“Looking for this?" She waved the file in the air.I rushed over to her and managed to snatch it when she shifted backwards."The Southside armies are launching an attack soon.” She said, "You ought to be more careful, Adrain; things might get tougher than you think." She handed the file over to me.I pulled the signed documents and glanced through them, then placed them back on the file after confirming it was still intact. “Tell me more about the Southside
~Adrain~I glanced through the documents Austin dropped on my desk and shook my head in disagreement. How would the South Side armies want an agreement? The matter has already been resolved in a peace talk, so who would have brought it up again?I walked to the shelf next to my dresser and heaved. The piles of books there were discouraging for someone who wanted to search for something he didn’t know exactly where it was placed. I moved to the first row, carefully raising the books one at a time to ensure they didn’t stick to each other. The document wasn’t in the first row or the second or even the third row either.Could it be that I had misplaced it? My hands rested on my waist as I walked back to my desk, pulling the dresser open and beginning to rummage its contents.Still the same news. It wasn’t there.I closed my eyes, searching my head to remember if I had kept it somewhere else. But the memory wasn’t coming in. It's been three years, three whole years since it was signed an
~ Emilia ~“You can come in, Ivy." I responded, and Adrain moved to the door.He opened the door, and Ivy bowed, making way for him to leave before she came in.‘Shit, I was still tying a towel.’"Just hold on, Ivy; I will invite you in when I’m done.” Ivy turned back and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her.I hurriedly put on my clothes and then called her back.“Ma’m, someone brought you this." She said and stretched out a white envelope to my face.I looked at it and then back at her face.I crossed my arms. "Someone dropped it for me?” I queried, confused.“Yes, ma'am. The letter was directed to you.” She explained. What she said wasn’t just adding up.Who would possibly drop off a letter for me?“Drop it here, Ivy." I pointed at the couch. Ivy gently placed the envelope there and bowed before leaving. After I had packed my hair, I went to where the envelope was kept and picked it up.I went to my bed and sat down, assessing the letter. ‘Emilia Grayson’ was boldl
~ Emilia ~The bang I felt on my head when I woke up was massive.I smiled, remembering how Adrain carried me in his arms to my room and then tucked me into bed after I told him I felt sleepy. He really cared, though. He ensured the vase didn’t hit my head, not just once but thrice. How do you feel when someone you think doesn't love you suddenly starts to care? The feeling is reassuring, so reassuring that you would fall for him again.I rolled myself out of the bed and headed to the bathroom. When I came back to my room, my mind raced back to the event that played earlier. How could a vase drop from the servants' quarters not even once but three whole times?Something is off. I sat down on my bed and crossed my leg, looking up to the sky as the thoughts flew in.I saw the figure, at least from his neck down to his head. But they were all covered in a black mask; I couldn’t see his face. Why would someone throw off a vase without even checking if someone was there? Let's say the v
~ Adrain ~I paced in my room, patiently waiting for Austin to arrive.“You called me." Austin bowed as soon as he stepped in."Earlier at the courtyard, did you make sure all the guards were present?" I stopped to face him.He tilted his head, then nodded."Yes, Alpha, I made sure they all left their quarters."“No," I shook my head. “They didn’t all leave their quarters.” I leaned closer.“Who then threw the glass?"“The glass?" Austin echoed, confused.“Yes, the vase. Not just once or even twice, but thrice. Three fucking times." I made the sign with my hands for clearer understanding.Austin still looked confused, and then I knew I needed to explain.“After addressing the guards, I was leaving and then bumped into Emilia, and next thing, a vase fell from the servant quarters almost hitting her.” I paused.Austin's expression was unreadable, but a mix of shock and confusion was written all over him.“I pulled her out the first time, the second, and the third time." I clenched my fi
