“I saw her mum; it’s indeed Emilia. " I explained, searching my mum's eyes for her next reaction. "Emilia seems to be getting away from my wrath." My mum said and gritted her teeth in anger. “We aren’t just going to let the fool get away like that. We need to do something.” She declared. "Aside from that, Mum, we need to act fast and dig up more about Charlotte.” "Guess what, Ava?” My mum squealed excitedly. "We found the half-burnt photo.” She said and went to pick a file from the table. "Open it," she urged. I looked at her face, then collected the file. I opened it and pulled out a few stacks of brown papers, then an old photo. I dropped the file and papers and stared at the photo. I gasped in shock. “Mum." I widened my eyes. “She looked exactly like me when I was young. " I pointed at the picture; it was a little boy and a girl who held each other's hands, looking at the moonlight. I ran to the mirror that hung on the wall in my room. I stared at myself and back at the picture. Same brunette hair, same looks and even same eyes. “Dopple gangas are real, Mum. "I went to sit next to her. My mum let out a triumphant smirk. “You didn’t know how happy I was when I found out about this, Ava.” She came to hug me tightly. “And lastly, Ava, your father shouldn’t know about this.” She said and handed a paper over to me. “What is this, Mum?" "Just hope..." We were interrupted by the sudden knock on the door. The door opened before we could respond, revealing my dad. "Dad", I called and handed the paper back to my mum. “Come here, Ava," he said and extended his hands for an embrace. "What's the occasion, Dad?" I laughed and embraced him. "Adrain wants you to meet him at his private penthouse.” He announced. "Really?" "Yeah, and you are going with the photo and all we have found out so far," my dad explained. I nodded, my mind racing with thoughts. I even had more plans for things to do aside from what Mum and Dad wanted. Dad dipped his hands into his pocket and pulled out a folded paper. “Here, the letter he dropped based on where you instructed him to form your last letter is attached to the file." I collected the paper and unfolded it. I read the first few lines and nodded. Tomorrow noon at his private penthouse. The last part made me laugh. “Don’t dress tacky again." Yeah, for some weird reasons, the Charlotte girl dresses in a tacky way. This plan was actually getting harder than I thought. Dressing tacky wasn’t my thing, by the way. I was just doing all of it because of this. And as for Emilia, I was coming for her. I will have to use her this time so my plans can yield. “Got it, Dad, it's tomorrow at noon. " I handed him back the letter. "Alright then.” Dad patted my back before leaving, and then my mum followed him. After making sure they'd left, I bolted the door, ensuring it was locked. I pulled out my phone and dialled a number. “Ava." A female voice called from the other end of the call. “I really need your help, Nyx.” I paused to hear what her reply would be. "Okay, go on.” "It's just a simple task this time around. You are going to help me keep someone hostage for three days. “Three days? That’s a whole lot, Ava." She hissed. "It isn’t a lot, Nyx; it's just three days. And it's no one of importance by the way.” “So, who is this?" “We will discuss it in a text. This isn’t the right space for the discussion at the moment; just wanted to give you a hint on what is coming in." "Okay, text me when you are ready.” She said and hung up. I smiled in satisfaction, knowing that my plans were falling into place. I needed to find something to wear to Adrain’s penthouse. Nothing of my taste rhymes with that of Charlotte's. Our dress sense was totally out of it, but I had to wear them to come out successful in what we were into. The knock on my door disrupted my search. I opened the door to find one of the servants standing. "Ma'am, your father wants you downstairs." She said and turned to leave. “Come back.” I ordered, remembering she was Emilia's closest servant then and she might be useful any day, though. "Tell Dad I will get myself down in a jiffy.” I said, flashing her a fake smile. She nodded at my sudden niceness and left. I walked back to the dresser to continue the search for a cloth when I heard the beeping sound of my phone. I decided to ignore it, but the sound came again, again and again. I hissed and went to check who it was. “Just come alone.” The text read. I checked for the texter ID, but it was restricted. Who is this, and why would the person text thrice and restrict his or her ID I sighed in frustration and sat on my bed. I needed to call Nyx to confirm if it was her. But I never mentioned to her I was coming.~ Emilia ~“Tell me more about it, Ivy. How long do the guards stay up at night or even in the morning? Tell me everything you know about it." I smiled and pointed to the couch for her to sit on while I moved to my bed.Ivy hesitated for a while before sitting. “The pack is heavily guarded every single hour of the day, both day and night. The general commander is in charge of assigning each guard to their duty post. And no one leaves the main pack gate without the order of the Alpha.” I nodded, all she was saying sinking in. “And about night, Luna, they guard also at night; the pack never goes an hour without the guards in their usual position, unless the Alpha says otherwise.”I wanted to press further, to ask even deeper questions, but I wasn’t sure it would go down well. It might stir up suspicion from her or even Adrain when he might have inquired about my whereabouts tomorrow. “I will need your help tomorrow, Ivy, but I will get you at that time. You can leave now." Ivy stoo
~Adrain~I ignored Charlotte and unlocked the drawer of the desk and began sorting the files.I searched all through but couldn’t find it. Losing this file would cost me a lot. I stopped the search and stood still.I was certain I left the file here at my penthouse. And no one has access to this place but just I and Charlotte.I turned to her; she was still pacing in the room. Her arms folded on her chest. She stopped, seeing my lingering gaze, and walked to where I was. She zipped down the jacket, pulling a file from its side.“Looking for this?" She waved the file in the air.I rushed over to her and managed to snatch it when she shifted backwards."The Southside armies are launching an attack soon.” She said, "You ought to be more careful, Adrain; things might get tougher than you think." She handed the file over to me.I pulled the signed documents and glanced through them, then placed them back on the file after confirming it was still intact. “Tell me more about the Southside
~Adrain~I glanced through the documents Austin dropped on my desk and shook my head in disagreement. How would the South Side armies want an agreement? The matter has already been resolved in a peace talk, so who would have brought it up again?I walked to the shelf next to my dresser and heaved. The piles of books there were discouraging for someone who wanted to search for something he didn’t know exactly where it was placed. I moved to the first row, carefully raising the books one at a time to ensure they didn’t stick to each other. The document wasn’t in the first row or the second or even the third row either.Could it be that I had misplaced it? My hands rested on my waist as I walked back to my desk, pulling the dresser open and beginning to rummage its contents.Still the same news. It wasn’t there.I closed my eyes, searching my head to remember if I had kept it somewhere else. But the memory wasn’t coming in. It's been three years, three whole years since it was signed an
~ Emilia ~“You can come in, Ivy." I responded, and Adrain moved to the door.He opened the door, and Ivy bowed, making way for him to leave before she came in.‘Shit, I was still tying a towel.’"Just hold on, Ivy; I will invite you in when I’m done.” Ivy turned back and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her.I hurriedly put on my clothes and then called her back.“Ma’m, someone brought you this." She said and stretched out a white envelope to my face.I looked at it and then back at her face.I crossed my arms. "Someone dropped it for me?” I queried, confused.“Yes, ma'am. The letter was directed to you.” She explained. What she said wasn’t just adding up.Who would possibly drop off a letter for me?“Drop it here, Ivy." I pointed at the couch. Ivy gently placed the envelope there and bowed before leaving. After I had packed my hair, I went to where the envelope was kept and picked it up.I went to my bed and sat down, assessing the letter. ‘Emilia Grayson’ was boldl
~ Emilia ~The bang I felt on my head when I woke up was massive.I smiled, remembering how Adrain carried me in his arms to my room and then tucked me into bed after I told him I felt sleepy. He really cared, though. He ensured the vase didn’t hit my head, not just once but thrice. How do you feel when someone you think doesn't love you suddenly starts to care? The feeling is reassuring, so reassuring that you would fall for him again.I rolled myself out of the bed and headed to the bathroom. When I came back to my room, my mind raced back to the event that played earlier. How could a vase drop from the servants' quarters not even once but three whole times?Something is off. I sat down on my bed and crossed my leg, looking up to the sky as the thoughts flew in.I saw the figure, at least from his neck down to his head. But they were all covered in a black mask; I couldn’t see his face. Why would someone throw off a vase without even checking if someone was there? Let's say the v
~ Adrain ~I paced in my room, patiently waiting for Austin to arrive.“You called me." Austin bowed as soon as he stepped in."Earlier at the courtyard, did you make sure all the guards were present?" I stopped to face him.He tilted his head, then nodded."Yes, Alpha, I made sure they all left their quarters."“No," I shook my head. “They didn’t all leave their quarters.” I leaned closer.“Who then threw the glass?"“The glass?" Austin echoed, confused.“Yes, the vase. Not just once or even twice, but thrice. Three fucking times." I made the sign with my hands for clearer understanding.Austin still looked confused, and then I knew I needed to explain.“After addressing the guards, I was leaving and then bumped into Emilia, and next thing, a vase fell from the servant quarters almost hitting her.” I paused.Austin's expression was unreadable, but a mix of shock and confusion was written all over him.“I pulled her out the first time, the second, and the third time." I clenched my fi
