Chapter 4

Author: Green Pick
I barely managed to make a sound before Victor and Agatha clamped their hands over my mouth, holding me firmly in place.

Billy immediately dropped his arrogant attitude and stood at attention, respectful and alert. The Chapmans shrank back, holding their breaths, and lowered their heads in fear.

All of a sudden, the room seemed to be swallowed by an oppressive weight. Dad donned a deep blue coat, his gaze sharp, his presence cold and commanding.

He frowned slightly, as if catching the stench of blood in the air. "Why was I brought here? Haven't I made it clear that I have no interest in these shady dealings?"

Everyone in the room stood firmly in front of me, blocking my view.

Billy hurried forward, lowering his head respectfully. "Mr. Greven, they came to offer you a woman."

"Ridiculous."

Dad's voice was cold, completely devoid of warmth. He didn't even spare them an extra glance. "Next time, don't bother calling me for these matters. It's a waste of time."

With that, he turned to leave.

Norris panicked, rushing forward with an ingratiating smile plastered across his face. "Mr. Greven, don't go just yet! I promise, this woman is exactly like the mistress you've been looking for!"

Dad stopped. The air around him seemed to drop in pressure. He barked, "I've never sought a mistress, so you'd better stop insulting me here! In all my life, I've been faithful only to my late wife!"

Norris staggered back, clearly intimidated.

Seeing his last hope slipping away, he turned his venomous gaze toward me. "Billy, what do you think of this woman? Since Mr. Greven isn't interested, maybe you can take her for… fun?"

Billy licked his lips, eyes glinting with lewdness. "Not a bad idea. Make me an offer."

I watched Dad's figure grow smaller as he walked away, my heart clenching as if gripped by an icy hand.

Despair surged over me like a tidal wave. I knew this was my final chance. If I missed it and fell back into the hands of these monsters, I had no doubts that things would be even worse.

I couldn't let it happen—not until I fought till the end.

I looked at the pair of scissors buried deep in my hand and knew it was the only reachable item available. Enduring the excruciating pain, I clenched my jaw and pulled out the scissors with my left hand, blood squirting incessantly.

Then, with all my remaining strength, I tossed the scissors into the air. They landed on the floor, the clang quickly gathering everyone's attention.

At last, Dad noticed me. The moment I looked up, I met his eyes.

Billy reacted swiftly. Fuming, he was ready to land another kick on me. "Bitch, I told you to stop moving!"

Before he could do so, Dad bellowed, "Hold it!"

I stepped onto the front steps of the manor and immediately spotted the hunched figure outside. It was Norris. His face was still carved with the familiar contours I once knew, but all the glow and vitality were gone. He had wasted away, his skin pale and sallow, his clothes tattered, his body covered in old and new scars.Half of his right forearm was gone, wrapped in dark, grimy bandages. His left leg was twisted, forcing him to limp and stagger as he struggled to stay upright. The only thing unchanged was his eyes—murky, desperate, and clinging to me like a drowning man.The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. He tried to lunge forward, but the bodyguards held him back."Winnie! Winnie!" he screamed hoarsely. "You finally agreed to see me! I'm sorry—I was wrong in every way!"I stood on the steps, looking down at him with indifferent eyes, as if I were staring at a stranger with no connection to me. "What are you doing here?""I-I know I did everything wrong in the past. I was

The day I was discharged, the weather was beautiful. Sunlight streamed through the car windows, warm against my skin. The car glided smoothly through the gates of the Greven residence, taking me back to the home I hadn't seen in five years. The manor looked just as I remembered it, but now there were far more flowers—my favorite kinds—blooming everywhere.I suddenly noticed a spacious, bright sunroom in the garden."I know you love painting, so I had someone build this for you," Dad said. "From now on, this will be your own painting studio."I stepped inside and saw a whole wall filled with paint and supplies. Tears welled up in my eyes again. Even after five years, Dad remembered what I loved. For all this time, he had been waiting for me to come home.In the days that followed, I threw myself completely into painting. When I was working before, Norris always kept me busy with endless tasks, supposedly to train me. It left me no time to pick up a brush and do what I truly wanted

I stayed in the hospital for two weeks before I fully recovered. The day before I was discharged, I asked Dad about Billy and Norris. He paused for a moment, then asked, "Do you really want to know?"I nodded."You should know that Billy is Patrick's grandson. He was spoiled as a child, never learned anything useful, and had just come back from abroad. He didn't know anything—so yes, it was a misunderstanding."His voice hardened. "Still, he hurt you. No matter who it is, anyone who harms my daughter has to pay. Out of respect for Patrick's lifelong loyalty, I spared his life."But I ruined one of his legs and an arm, stripped him of all assets, and threw him out of the house. As for the rest, that's up to his own luck."I stayed silent. Billy wasn't capable of much on his own. Once out of the Greven residence, he would probably never amount to anything.Although he had been my childhood playmate, I didn't feel an ounce of sympathy. He deserved it.Then, there were the Chapmans.

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed, staring up at the spotless white ceiling."You're up."A low, hoarse voice sounded beside me. I slowly turned my head and saw Dad sitting quietly at the edge of the bed. It wasn't until then that I had a good look at him.I wasn't sure if it was because he had been restless watching over me or simply because we hadn't seen each other in five years, but he looked much older.I parted my lips, my throat dry and sore. Only a faint breathy sound came out. "Dad…""Stay still. The doctor said you're out of danger now and need to take it easy."Finally, I took a moment to really look at my body.My right hand was wrapped in thick layers of gauze. Even the slightest movement sent sharp, stabbing pain through it. Those scissors had penetrated my metacarpals."The doctor said that if treatment had been delayed, your right hand could've been permanently disabled," Dad said. "Luckily, you only need some rest. The aftereffects won'

Although it had been five years since Dad and I last met, and despite my swollen face, messy hair, and disheveled clothes, he recognized me. How could he not? I was his precious daughter, after all.He stared at me in disbelief, his voice trembling. "Winnie?"I couldn't form proper words. All I could do was nod and sob uncontrollably, tears streaming down my face. His gaze swept over me slowly—my bruised cheek, the red marks on my neck, the visible bruises across my body—before finally locking on my right hand, pierced and bleeding.Norris, oblivious to the tension, misread the situation entirely. He thought Dad was impressed, so he shamelessly approached."Mr. Greven, look—she looks exactly like the woman you've been looking for, right? Trust me, I've trained her myself for five years. I guarantee you… she'll know exactly what to do in the bedroom—""Silence!"Dad's head shot up, and the eyes that were usually calm and steady now blazed with fury. Norris froze, his grin stiffen
