"What is this?" Elise stared at the documents placed on her desk. The large words printed in bold seemed like an ominous sign: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
"The divorce papers. Don't forget how you married into my family, Elise Thatcher," Kayden Anderson said coldly, his dark eyes seemed to be assessing her. It was this pair of deep and dark eyes that seemed to have a profound meaning that made Elise fall in love with him. "Kayden, could I know why you want a divorce? We've been married for three years," Elise kept her calm, but her heart felt as if it was being stabbed by thousands of knives. "Those three years I've been in a coma. You should know that this isn't my wish. I have no recollection of any memorable times with you. Grandma only let you marry into the family to make it convenient," Kayden spoke coldly. At that moment, his phone rang, cutting off the rest of his words. Without waiting for her to sign or say something, Kayden strode out of the door after receiving a call. Elise stood in the room that she had stayed in for the past three years. She had worked her ass off to take care of her husband when he was in a coma after a car accident. She gave up many job opportunities and the scholarship to Paris for him. Yet, she was seen as nothing but a golddigger who wanted to use him to climb the social ladder. Elise stared at her husband's broad back, laughing bitterly at herself. This was the man she had fallen head over heels for. "Elise! What the hell are you doing upstairs?! Come downstairs and help in the kitchen. Make yourself useful for god's sake!" Maria bellowed. Maria was Kayden's spoilt younger sister who would always boss her around like she was a maid. Elise walked downstairs. The servants and maids were rushing back and forth, decorating and preparing things. Elise wondered what was the special occasion. "There you are! Why are you so slow? Didn't eat enough food? My brother is so magnanimous to let you stay here for free. Free food, free roof over your head, free clothes and money. Come and help in the kitchen!" Maria glared at her with disdain and disgust. "Yes, Maria," Elise followed her to the kitchen and began to cut the vegetables and wash them. Maria just stood there to supervise, ordering the servants about. Never in her life had she done a household chore. After the dishes were prepared and cooked, Elise headed back to her room where the divorce papers were lying there on the table. Along the way, she passed by her brother-in-law's room. "It's a good thing that we have a nanny like Elise to do the cooking and household chores. Sigh... These servants are all so useless. What are we even paying them for?" Maria's voice came from inside the room. "She's nothing but a golddigger. If it wasn't for grandma, my brother would have married someone who's worthy of him," James said. James was Kayden's younger brother. "She seemed to have forgotten that Kayden married her so that she could nurse him back to health. Everyday I have to see that disgusting face of hers! I can't wait to kick her out. Ugh!" Maria complained. Elise thought that if she worked hard enough and pleased her in-laws, they would eventually accept her. Unfortunately, it was all her wishful thinking. She bit her lips and walked past, returning to her room. She looked at the divorce papers again, an invisible noose tightening around her neck, suffocating her. Elise picked up the pen and signed her name. She called the butler, Johnson, to come over. "Yes, Mrs. Anderson. What can I do for you?" "This, this, and this. I don't need any villa in the suburbs or ten million cash as compensation. Cancel it." Johnson blinked, surprise evident on his face. "Mrs. Anderson, are you sure? The amount is a lot. Besides, you'll be living in this city all by yourself." "I'm sure. Please do it," Elise flashed a sad smile. What she wanted and lost couldn't be compared to just ten million dollars and a villa worth twenty millions. Was Kayden making fun of her? They seemed to have forgotten that Elise was the one who brought Kayden back, the one who healed him, the one who got him back on track. "I'll do it right away," Johnson said. There was some commotion downstairs. Elise took a peek from upstairs. She saw a designer's handbag on the table. It wasn't hers, and she knew that Maria doesn't like this brand. So whose was it? Her past suspicions resurfaced in her mind. Elise went downstairs and came face to face with Kayden. And he had a woman in his arms. Upon seeing her, the woman purposely leaned into Kayden's chest and flashed a provocative smirk at Elise. Elise recognized this woman. The heiress of the Paige Group, and Kayden's first love. At that moment, Elise felt her heart shattered to pieces. He brought his mistress home?! Kayden and Jessica walked past her, treating her like she was furniture. She watched as Maria and James went over to greet Jessica warmly. No wonder they were preparing food and decorating the place. It was for Jessica to move in! Furious, Elise pulled the wedding ring off her finger and flung it at Kayden. The metal hit his chest, and he turned and glared at her. "What are you doing, Elise?" His tone was cold and chilling. "Elise, why did you throw that worthless piece of metal at my brother? Apologize!" Maria crossed her arms. "Apologize? Sure. Tomorrow, I'll personally come over to your office and give you my sincerest apologies," Elise sneered. "Elise Thatcher, watch your behavior," Kayden warned. "Kayde, don't get worked up. I think there's some misunderstanding," Jessica stroked Kayden's chest while calling him affectionately. "There's no misunderstanding," Elise decided that she had enough. "Johnson, bring the divorce papers.""Maria! What kind of behavior is that? We don't speak rudely to guests. Moreover, she's your grandma's goddaughter. Apologize to Elise now," Michael slapped the table. He didn't approve of such behavior as he had always raised his children to be polite and respectful. "Fine. Alright," Maria readily stood up and walked around to where Elise sat. Elise eyed her with slight surprise. Maria, who disliked apologizing and admitting mistakes, was suddenly eager to apologize to her? That was unlike her. "I'm sorry, Elise. Will you forgive me? If you don't believe I'm sincere like last time, I'll apologize with a gift. Please accept it," Maria offered a red box with both hands. "Oh, look how sweet Maria is!" Amanda exclaimed, backing up her daughter's acting. Elise caught a faint whiff of something in it and her skin started to feel itchy. "What's in the box?" "It's premium seafood. I heard that Elise liked seafood so I specifically prepared this for her," Maria grinned slyly. Knowing
There was a knock on the banquet doors and a woman walked in with a middle-aged man and woman. It was Jessica. "Sorry. Am I interrupting something?" Jessica asked in a gentle and soft voice. She looked meek and docile. Kayden got up, taking Jessica's hand in his and leading them to the table. Naty's face turned strict when she saw them. "Why are they here?" Naty questioned. She gazed at Jessica and her parents with clear disdain and contempt. "Guards, throw them out," Jessica's eyes flashed with fear. No. She couldn't get thrown out like this. She'll be humiliated. Mrs. Paige sensed that the ties between Jessica and Naty were tight. She stepped forward and attempted to smooth things over, but Kayden beat her to it. "I called them over. I have something to announce," Kayden said, his words carrying an unspeakable authority. Naty shot him a questioning and fierce look as if she already knew what he was going to say. "Jessica is pregnant. I'm marrying her two months from now,"
At that time, Jessica purposely moaned extra loud to get Elise's attention. She wanted to show off how good Kayden made her feel. Back when Elise was still obsessed with Kayden, she never dared to retort when the Andersons humiliated her because she didn't want to make things hard for Kayden. She understood the Anderson family's relationship with each other. She also knew what kind of situation Kayden was in. Hence, she considered everything for Kayden and tolerated every bite and bullet they fired at her. But now, they were divorced. Elise wasn't going to play nice with them anymore. Their faces twisted in rage upon Elise's words. Sophie's face contorted with rage and she looked like she wanted to bite Elise. Molly quickly stepped in to smooth things over. She was older than Sophie, who was in her late twenties. "Elise, don't blame Sophie for speaking her mind just now. As you know, when you were married to Kayden, you didn't make any contribution to the family. Aside from doing
"Hello, Uncle Josh, Aunt Sophie," Kayden shook their hands with more force than necessary. "Where's your wife? How come I don't see Elise around?" Josh asked, looking behind Kayden. During family gatherings like this, Kayden's relatives wouldn't hesitate to put Elise in her place and make fun of her. However, Kayden was oblivious to it because he didn't really attend the family gatherings. "We're divorced," Kayden casually said. "Oh, divorced? Why? The two of you were perfect together," Josh wouldn't hesitate to jab at Kayden. He took delight in seeing Kayden in jeopardy. He enjoyed poking fun at Kayden's useless and pathetic housewife, often bullying Elise. "My true love is Jessica. I'm going to marry her," he told his uncle coldly, glaring at him. "I see. Then where is Jessica? There's going to be a dance party. You need a partner to dance with," Josh said. He nearly stammered but caught himself in time. "That's not necessary. Uncle, you spent hours learning how to lose mone
"Wait," Elise was busying herself in the hotel, inspecting the rooms and kitchen, when she heard a familiar voice call out to her. She turned and saw that Kayden was striding towards her, a scowl on his face as if the whole world owed him money. "What are you doing here? This is the kitchen," Elise ignored him and went back to making a cake. "If you have something to say, just out with it. As you can see, I'm very busy," Elise continued to decorate the cake, squeezing the cream around it skillfully. She ignored him like he didn't bother her. This somehow irked Kayden. The way she designed the cake looked oddly familiar. Kayden was sure he had never seen her bake or cook before, so why did he have such flashes of images? "I'm here on two things. One, I'm not done with you, Elise. Two, Maria's and James' matter," Kayden approached her, his voice cold and unnerving. Elise felt as if
All the eyes of the staff fell on Elise. Ava looked around but didn't see anything or anyone looking like a manager. Until she noticed that all the staff were looking in one direction.Elise? She was the manager?! How was that possible?"You? The manager? Can you even manage a hotel? You have no education or degree," Ava laughed at her with disdain, crossing her arms."This hotel is owned by the Kings. Miss Thatcher is—" one of the staff couldn't bear to see his boss get bullied.Elise held up a hand, cutting the staff off. This hotel was owned by the Kings?!Ellison let her become the general manager of this hotel?! How foolish and blinded must Ellison be.Jessica and Kayden had the same thought, thinking that Elise seduced her way up.But Kayden was more interested in why she wouldn't let the staff speak. What was she hiding?"I bet you used your body to seduce Ellison King and his brother to get the
Considering the years Elise spent in the mansion, the maids and servants must be close to her. If not, Elise wouldn't have stood up for them. What Amanda was afraid of was the maids and servants revealing how they treated her. "Who knows if you bribed them or what? These are all yo
"Shut the fuck up, Elise!" Kayden didn't know what to say to her taunts. He was shocked by the crude way she spoke and cursed. "Oh? Why? Isn't it the truth? You're the one who started it, dear ex-husband," she laughed, leaning into his touch. Her eyes were deeply enchanting yet dev
"Nope. I want my business to be independent. I don't need the family's help in managing it and I don't want any of you to fund my company," Elise said after Edward tried to persuade her to take his money. They were currently sitting in the General Manager's office. All he wanted to
Ellison's car arrived soon. "Since you can't walk, allow me to carry you," Ellison said. Elise nodded. She wrapped her hands around his neck as he lifted her up, carrying her bridal style. This scene was witnessed by Kayden and his friends who had gathered to go home
